In 1969 and 1970, Heyerdahl built two boats from papyrus and attempted to cross the Atlantic Ocean from Morocco in Africa. Based on drawings and models from ancient Egypt, the first boat, named Ra (after the Egyptian Sun god), was constructed by boat builders from Lake Chad using papyrus reed obtained from Lake Tana in Ethiopia and launched into the Atlantic Ocean from the coast of Morocco. The Ra crew included Thor Heyerdahl (Norway), Norman Baker (USA), Carlo Mauri (Italy), Yuri Senkevich (USSR), Santiago Genoves (Mexico), Georges Sourial (Egypt), Abdullah Djibrine (Chad). After a number of weeks, Ra took on water after its crew made modifications to the vessel that caused it to sag and break apart. The ship was abandoned and the following year, another similar vessel, Ra II, was built of totora by Demetrio, Juan and Jose Limachi from Lake Titicaca in Bolivia and likewise set sail across the Atlantic from Morocco, this time with great success. The crew was mostly the same, only Djibrine had been replaced by Japanese Kei Ohara and Madani Ait Ouhanni (from Morocco). The boat reached Barbados, thus demonstrating that mariners could have dealt with trans-Atlantic voyages by sailing with the Canary Current.

H.M.S. Victory, Adm. Horatio Nelson’s flagship at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, is now available as a museum-quality, FULLY ASSEMBLED model. This is an “Exclusive Edition” where the model has a unique serial number etched into the hull, which allows us to identify production date, material used and all other production information of a model.
Master craftsmen using historical photographs, drawings or original plans meticulously handcraft these highly detailed wood models from scratch. They are built to scale with high-grade wood such as: western red cedar, rosewood, and mahogany. They are 100% hand built individually using plank-on-frame construction method and are similar to the building of actual ships. Each model requires hundreds of hours to finish and must go through a demanding quality control process before leaving the workshop.
This amazing replica of the H.M.S. Victory model features plank on frame, three decks, and three ferocious rows of metal cannons on each side of the ship. The front bowsprit and three large masts are connected securely using advanced rigging and lines painstakingly knotted and fastened by hand. Each yard has an attached hand-stitched rolled-up sails made of fine linen. Metal anchors and a wooden rudder are visible on the front and rear of the ship. On the deck, there are authentic hand-built lifeboats with ribs and planks, stationed metal cannons, metal steering wheels, wooden crane, captain’s dining and sleeping cabin, and many other handcrafted ornaments. There is also an exquisite detailed admiral’s quarter on the stern with beautiful metal lanterns, handcrafted brass statues and ornaments, and a wooden flag pole.
This model comes standard with a solid wood base and brass nameplate. It’ll make a perfect gift for home or office decorator, boat enthusiast or passionate collector.
History H.M.S. Victory was the ultimate British fighting vessel: 227 feet long with 104 guns and 850 men when at full capacity. It was launched in 1765 and is most famous as Adm. Horatio Nelson’s flagship at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. Nelson was shot and killed during the battle.
H.M.S. Victory is the oldest naval ship still in commission. It has been restored and rests in drydocks at Portsmouth, England. The ship in Portsmouth is the sixth ship with the name Victory in the Royal Navy. There has been great interest in the fifth Victory ship, which was built 15 years earlier and whose wreckage was found recently by Odyessy Marine Exploration.

Locomotive details-
Builder: R. Stephenson & Hawthorn Ltd., Newcastle-on-Tyne.
Built: 1945, works no.7169
Wheel Arrangement: 0-6-0ST
Wheel diameter: 4’ 3”
Boiler Pressure: 170psi.
Weight : 48 tons 5 cwt.
71515 was commissioned by the War Department in 1945 from Robert Stevenson and Hawthorns as WD71515, but, with WW2 all but over, was quickly put to work at the Swalwell Disposal Point in what was then the county of Durham, but is now Tyne & Wear. At the time the opencast disposal point was worked by Mechanical Navvies Limited, and it is in that company’s livery that the loco now appears.
It was taken into preservation by 1974 to the East Somerset Railway, where shortly after arrival she was was liveried in BR black with the spurious running number 68005.
By 1995 she was in service at the Bolton and Embsay Railway, still in BR black and where she was nicknamed ‘The Mog’. She was overhauled in 2004, but burst a boiler tube two years later and was laid aside.
Three years later, following interest shown by a PBR member, she was purchased in August 2009, and in the following month, taken to the Flour Mill works in the Forest of Dean for repair, and repainting into her original colour. She arrived at Furnace Sidings on 28 April 2010, and has worked the majority of services scheduled for steam haulage since. Her sure-footed bark as she tackles the steep grade between bridge 16 and Whistle Inn, and mournful Midland-style hooter is a familiar sound over Blaenavon.

This is the "Punch" end of the buffet table . . . the floating apples are frozen. These are used instead of ice or a frozen punch ring (hard to make as far as *I* am concerned - I quit doing it years ago and use apples of "seasonal" colors - - - green and yellow in the spring, and red or green (depending on what color the punch is) for Christmas, yellow or red for fall, etc. I used green in the white-cranberry-grape-juice punch for my daughter's wedding. (Picture of THAT punch bowl is in the first comment below . . . it wouldn't "stick" here!
My mom taught me this trick and people love it. The apples can be "trash apples" - things you don't particularly enjoy eating . . . small ones, etc., as long as they are good and clean without bruises or "bad" places since they get quite mushy when they thaw out over several hours time.
They're festive and they make WONDERFUL "ice cubes" - - - keep it very cold without diluting the punch at *all*!!!!

The Matterhorn (German), Cervino (Italian) or Cervin (French), is a mountain in the Pennine Alps. With its 4,478 metres (14,692 ft) high summit, lying on the border between Switzerland and Italy, it is one of the highest peaks in the Alps and its 1,200 metres (3,937 ft) north face is one of the Great north faces of the Alps.
The individual pieces of the chocolate bar Toblerone are claimed by its maker Kraft to be formed in the likeness of the Matterhorn.
Zermatt (French: Praborgne) is a municipality in the district of Visp in the German-speaking section of the canton of Valais in Switzerland.
It is located at the northern base of the Matterhorn in the Pennine Alps, about 10 km from the border with Italy.
Zermatt has a permanent population of around 5,500 people, although the actual population varies considerably through the seasons as tourists come and go. The village is situated at the end of Mattertal, a north-facing valley, at an altitude of 1,620m (5,315ft). The valley is a dead end; although the border with Italy is close, it cannot be crossed by road, as it traverses a glacier at an altitude of over 3,000m. Zermatt is the starting point of the Patrouille des Glaciers and the Haute Route.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matterhorn
The Alps (French: Alpes; German: Alpen; Italian: Alpi; Romansh: Alps; Slovene: Alpe) is the name for one of the great mountain range systems of Europe, stretching from Austria and Slovenia in the east, through Italy, Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Germany to France in the west. The word "Alps" was taken via French from Latin Alpes (meaning "the Alps"), which may be influenced by the Latin words albus (white) or altus (high) or more likely a Latin rendering of a Celtic or Ligurian original.
The highest mountain in the Alps is Mont Blanc, at 4,808 metres (15,774 ft), on the Italian-French border. All the main peaks of the Alps can be found in the list of mountains of the Alps and list of Alpine peaks by prominence.
The Alps are generally divided into the Western Alps and the Eastern Alps. The division is along the line between Lake Constance and Lake Como, following the Rhine. The Western Alps are higher, but their central chain is shorter and curved; they are located in Italy, France and Switzerland. The Eastern Alps (main ridge system elongated and broad) belong to Austria, Germany, Italy, Liechtenstein, Slovenia and Switzerland.
The Alps are a classic example of what happens when a temperate area at lower altitude gives way to higher elevation terrain. Elevations around the world which have cold climates similar to those found in polar areas have been called alpine. A rise from sea level into the upper regions of the atmosphere causes the temperature to decrease. The effect of mountain chains on prevailing winds is to carry warm air belonging to the lower region into an upper zone, where it expands in volume at the cost of a proportionate loss of heat, often accompanied by the precipitation of moisture in the form of snow or rain.

From Wikipedia:
Elsie Stephen Meighen - born January 22, 1872, Perth, Ontario - and Robert Wilson Reford - born in 1867, Montreal - got married on June 12, 1894.
Elsie Reford was a pioneer of Canadian horticulture, creating one of the largest private gardens in Canada on her estate, Estevan Lodge in eastern Québec. Located in Grand-Métis on the south shore of the St. Lawrence River, her gardens have been open to the public since 1962 and operate under the name Les Jardins de Métis and Reford Gardens.
Born January 22, 1872 at Perth, Ontario, Elsie Reford was the eldest of three children born to Robert Meighen and Elsie Stephen. Coming from modest backgrounds themselves, Elsie’s parents ensured that their children received a good education. After being educated in Montreal, she was sent to finishing school in Dresden and Paris, returning to Montreal fluent in both German and French, and ready to take her place in society.
She married Robert Wilson Reford on June 12, 1894. She gave birth to two sons, Bruce in 1895 and Eric in 1900. Robert and Elsie Reford were, by many accounts, an ideal couple. In 1902, they built a house on Drummond Street in Montreal. They both loved the outdoors and they spend several weeks a year in a log cabin they built at Lac Caribou, south of Rimouski. In the autumn they hunted for caribou, deer, and ducks. They returned in winter to ski and snowshoe. Elsie Reford also liked to ride. She had learned as a girl and spent many hours riding on the slopes of Mount Royal. And of course, there was salmon-fishing – a sport at which she excelled.
In her day, she was known for her civic, social, and political activism. She was engaged in philanthropic activities, particularly for the Montreal Maternity Hospital and she was also the moving force behind the creation of the Women’s Canadian Club of Montreal, the first women club in Canada. She believed it important that the women become involved in debates over the great issues of the day, « something beyond the local gossip of the hour ». Her acquaintance with Lord Grey, the Governor-General of Canada from 1904 to 1911, led to her involvement in organizing, in 1908, Québec City’s tercentennial celebrations. The event was one of many to which she devoted herself in building bridges with French-Canadian community.
During the First World War, she joined her two sons in England and did volunteer work at the War Office, translating documents from German into English. After the war, she was active in the Victorian Order of Nurses, the Montreal Council of Social Agencies, and the National Association of Conservative Women.
In 1925 at the age of 53 years, Elsie Reford was operated for appendicitis and during her convalescence, her doctor counselled against fishing, fearing that she did not have the strength to return to the river.”Why not take up gardening?” he said, thinking this a more suitable pastime for a convalescent woman of a certain age. That is why she began laying out the gardens and supervising their construction. The gardens would take ten years to build, and would extend over more than twenty acres.
Elsie Reford had to overcome many difficulties in bringing her garden to life. First among them were the allergies that sometimes left her bedridden for days on end. The second obstacle was the property itself. Estevan was first and foremost a fishing lodge. The site was chosen because of its proximity to a salmon river and its dramatic views – not for the quality of the soil.
To counter-act nature’s deficiencies, she created soil for each of the plants she had selected, bringing peat and sand from nearby farms. This exchange was fortuitous to the local farmers, suffering through the Great Depression. Then, as now, the gardens provided much-needed work to an area with high unemployment. Elsie Reford’s genius as a gardener was born of the knowledge she developed of the needs of plants. Over the course of her long life, she became an expert plantsman. By the end of her life, Elsie Reford was able to counsel other gardeners, writing in the journals of the Royal Horticultural Society and the North American Lily Society. Elsie Reford was not a landscape architect and had no training of any kind as a garden designer. While she collected and appreciated art, she claimed no talents as an artist.
Elsie Stephen Reford died at her Drummond Street home on November 8, 1967 in her ninety-sixth year.
In 1995, the Reford Gardens ("Jardins de Métis") in Grand-Métis were designated a National Historic Site of Canada, as being an excellent Canadian example of the English-inspired garden.(Wikipedia)

Created by Elsie Reford between 1926 and 1958, these gardens are an inspired example of the English art of the garden. Woven into a natural setting, a series of gardens display perennials, trees and shrubs. A crab-apple orchard, a rock garden, and the Long Walk are also the legacy of this dedicated horticulturist. A microclimate favours the growth of species found nowhere else in Canada, while the stream and winding paths add to the charm. Elsie Reford’s beloved blue poppies and lilies still bloom and contribute, with other exotic and indigenous plants, to the harmony of the site.

At 01:00 in Video Part 4 of 5 of the five videos I took of the car on stage, Evan starts up the car to the crowd's delight. At 01:25, I say, "I think he's trying to hide a chuckle." At 01:40, I say, "So, I saw this car in the back being pulled by a strap by a Japanese SUV. They were trying to start it." Evan was the guy in tow trying to start the Simplex. Wish I had put my camera on that. Evan certainly had fun with this one, from the back lot to the stage. ☺

SIMPLEX
The collector car hobby is now in its ninth or perhaps tenth decade with roots going back as early as the 1920s. Few cars have the distinction of being highly coveted for this entire period of time. Simplex without question is one of the few cars to have remained a great prize of collecting from day one to the present day. No car so completely embodies the romance and excitement of this period better than a Simplex. Possessing all the fleeting features of this charismatic era, massive four-cylinder, T-head engine, with power getting to the rear wheels via prodigious pair of chains all in a svelte and sporty package.
The Smith and Mabley Company's beginnings are in the importation of high-end European automobiles. S&M imported Panhard, Renault, Mors and most importantly Mercedes. S&M was the exclusive importer of Mercedes for the US market.
After a few years of importing the superb Mercedes products S&M developed their own Mercedes-like car but designed with uniquely American dimensions. S&M based much of the design around the Mercedes Simplex four-cylinder design — the world's finest automobile at the time. In 1908 Smith & Mabley would become the Simplex Automobile Company and focus exclusively on enormous displacement sporting cars. To power the Simplex an enlarged Mercedes type t-head engine of 597ci was designed. Simplex deviated from Mercedes by cleverly matched the bore and stroke at 5.75" to give the engine a combination of brute power and at a surprisingly wide RPM range. The cross flow, t-head design allowed Simplex to fit equally massive valves to aid the voluminous engine flow. Ignition was by Bosch twin-spark dual-magneto and carburetion by a Mercedes type unit by Newcomb. The huge cylinders were mated to a large aluminum crankcase and lubrication was a total loss with copious amounts of fresh oil supplied to the main bearings. S&M used the established high performance chassis configuration of midship mounted transaxle feeding power to the rear wheels through dual chains. This design reduced the cars unsprung weight and allowed for easy final-drive gear ratio changes. Placing the transaxle and brake weight more forward improved the cars balance and handling. Additionally this design allowed for separate braking system inboard at the transaxle as well as in the rear wheel drums helping keep the independent systems cool. This configuration since its development by Panhard et Levassor had become almost universally adopted for racing in this period.
The new 50 horse power Simplex was introduced to the public and despite its breathtaking price tag of $5750 they immediately found favor with sporting car enthusiasts. Unlike some of Simplex's competition the enormous engine was not designed to lug around heavy coachwork this car was designed from the ground up for driving performance. Simplex quickly cemented their reputation with success in motorsports. Unlike many builders Simplex competed with their standard production cars. Wining the Brighton Beach 24 hours and victories at Lowell and Fairmont all bolstered the Simplex reputation.. This was a race car for the street and few cars in the world could rival them for their shear performance.
Simplex offered the 50hp several attractive coachwork options for clients including the classic five-passenger toy tonneau and two passenger speedster by Holbrook. Customers could also specify unique coachwork designs by coach builders of their choosing as is the case with this magnificent Quinby example.
ELEONORA RANDOLF SEARS
Ms Sears born into wealthy family in 1881 would become renowned as one of the finest American sporting figures of the first half of the 20th century. Excelling most notably in international tennis, squash, show jumping, golf among others. She is considered one of the first female motorists in the US as one of the first woman to drive a racing car and the first Woman to contest a speeding ticket. She maintained her sporting prowess for decades even winning the national squash title in 1928 at age 47! She even remained active in competitive in squash at age 73.
She began her rise to high level tennis in 1904. She competed in every US tennis championship from 1911 to 1929 and was national doubles champion four time. A three-time competitor at Wimbledon and US Squash champion in 1928. She was not afraid of a public wager and embarked in a much publicized 47 mile walk from Newport, Rhode Island to Boston in 10.5 hours. She frequently caused trouble by wearing trousers and male riding apparel and pushed for allowing more equity in sports and society.
She was often in the spotlight of the gossip pages but caused a sensation when she became engaged to Harold Sterling Vanderbilt in 1911. Son of the pioneering motor racer and sportsman William Kissam Vanderbilt, Harold had a similar sporting flair. Most famous for his yacht racing success and ultimately defending the America's cup in Newport Rhode Island three times with the J class yachts Rainbow, Enterprise and Ranger. He maintained excellent taste in high performance motor cars and is remembered for his contribution to the popularity of contract bridge. He and Eleonora made a great celebrity couple with their seemingly compatible sporting interests. Mr Vanderbilt purchased Ms. Sears this Simplex motorcar as a gift for their engagement. Mr Vanderbilt was had several of his own Simplex motorcars including a spectacularly racy v-radiator equipped roadster. The engagement did not last but seemed to have a lasting impact on both. Harold would not marry for another 20 years and Eleonora would keep her beloved engagement gift for at least another 25 years.
THE MOTORCAR OFFERED
Ordered in 1911 this unique coachwork example is arguably the greatest survivor of the marque. Adorned in magnificent sporting coachwork by JM Quinby that is perfectly in harmony with the power and purpose of the Simplex chassis. The deep enveloping, cowl free from the bulk of a windshield with sleek built-in electric side lamps that also act as cockpit ventilators. The rakish fenders hint at the transitional nature of the car with their crisp flat lines and work perfectly with the innovative, torpedo bodywork. The wonderful wooden toolboxes were fitted from new, and the styling is further enhanced by the set of rear mounted spares. Having this sleek and light weight coachwork the Simplex was specified with ultra tall 1.97:1 final drive ratio allowing for 85mph at 1200rpm! There is nothing fussy about the final product pure, un-compromised style.
In 1939 Sears herself would drive the car to an early VMCCA at Raceland in Framingham Massachusetts. Ms Sears was awarded a beautiful silver trophy at the event which is still with the car. Original color films survive from this early antique car gathering. Around this time the cars ownership changed for the first time when Ms. Sears sold her beloved Simplex to VMMCA meter Sam Eliott.
Eventually the Simplex would find its way to the head of Buick and General Motors chief engineer Charles Chayne. A prolific engineer who developed countless products, Chayne was well known for his collection including the a Bugatti type 57S and most notably the Bugatti Type 41 "Royale" Weinberger roadster. Chayne had GM's full engineering capabilities at his disposal for his restorations. The best talents of GM had their way with Simplex and perfected the operation of the car to the highest standard. The engine was precession balanced and blue printed - to the finest possible standard. The brakes and the steering also received the full GM engineering attention. The Simplex steers light even when not moving and the brakes are shockingly powerful. The light steering and great cornering give enormous confidence during spirited driving. The electric starter installation is probably the crown jewell of the job - a discreet aircraft starter expertly mounted in place of the starting handle. The result is what most agree the finest driving Simplex, bar none.
Chayne would gradually disperse his collection many ending up in Museums - the Simplex at Brookline Massachusetts Museum of Transportation (now the Larz Anderson Auto Museum). Eventually the car was sold at auction to The Collings Foundation in the early 1980s. A short time later noted brass era collector Charles LeMaitre would acquire the car where it would reside for the next 20+ years. Of the more than 1000 antique cars Mr. Lemaitre would own this was the one he considers the finest. Mr. LeMaitre would use the car regularly and had the car fully restored starting in the mid 2000s. Trusting the Simplex to the capable hands of noted brass era restorer Fred Gonet in Proctorsville, Vermont. In this time the car was resprayed and new upholstery fitted. The wheels were rebuilt with new wood spokes and fellows. The mechanicals were fully refurbished while keeping the GM engineering that had been done under Chayne's restoration.
In 2013 the Sears Simplex was acquired by Seattle collector Craig McCaw. During this time he car was toured with and exhibited in the Simplex celebration at Pebble Beach. Eventually the car made it into the hands of the current owner a passionate collector with a diverse collection of world class automobiles. The Simplex is frequently used and always kept in "on the button" condition.
Cars of this quality rarely come to public auction. It has been nearly 17 years since an original bodied Simplex has been offered publicly. This car is among the finest antique cars in America and the opportunity to acquire something of this caliber is truly special.

www.bridgetdavey.com/blog/2015/12/striezelmarkt-in-dresden
The Dresdner Striezelmark is one of Germany's oldest documented Christmas markets and also one of it's best. Founded as a one-day market in 1434, it celebrated its 580th anniversary in 2014.
This market was first mentioned in 1434, under Friedrich II, a King of Saxony, when it was held the Monday before Christmas on the Altmarkt square. Originally, the a one-day market was here to provide the citizens of Dresden with the meat for the Christmas meal after the pre-Christmas period of fasting.
Over the centuries the Striezelmarkt has developed into a huge event with 250 stands, taking up a large part of Dresden city centre and lasting throughout the Advent period until Christmas Eve. Today the Striezelmarkt attracts 3 million visitors a year from all over the world.
The word Striezelmarkt comes from Strüzel or Stroczel, which was the name of a type of cake sold at the market, now famous as Stollen or Christstollen, a light airy fruitcake. The real Dresden Stollen, however, is produced in the city and distinguished by a special seal depicting the city's famous king, August the Strong.
Today the most famous features of Dresden Striezelmarkt are the world's largest usable Christmas arch with a breadth of 13.5 metres and a height of more than 5 metres and the 14-metre high Erzgebirge Christmas pyramid.
Famous is the Pflaumentoffel, a chimney sweep's boy
Apart from the famous Stollen, other specialities originate from Dresden and were originally sold at the Striezelmarkt. Made of prunes, these little figures are really decorations, although they can be eaten after Christmas.
Pulsnitzer Pfefferkuchen
Pfefferkuchen literally means "pepper cake": the word "pepper" was used to mean any new foreign spice. The gingerbread sold at the Striezelmarkt comes from Pulsnitz, a town about 50 km from Dresden; it was first mentioned as a speciality from Pulsnitz in a decree issued in 1558 allowing bakers to produce it there. Pfefferkuchen are usually filled with marmalade or jam and covered with chocolate. Unlike gingerbread from other countries, the dough does not usually contain any fat, or indeed ginger, but instead nutmeg, cinnamon, ground cloves and allspice, which are added after the dough has been left up to 6 months to mature.
Glühwein or Mulled Wine
One very well-loved tradition on a cold December night in Dresden is drinking steaming mugs of mulled wine at the Striezelmarkt. The hot red wine spiced with cloves and cinnamon is served in specially decorated mugs.

Unlike the old trucks in the preceding two photos, this Ford (from the 1948-50 period) looked like new and was still in use when spotted in Bedford, Virginia in May 2008. The front license attests to the antique status of the truck. Despite its essentially perfect appearance (quite likely the result of a recent restoration), the truck seems not to be a show vehicle but in use in the landscaping business: note the lettering on the door, the straw on the bed behind the cab, some mud on the tires, and some marks on the green bed side. A first thought was that the truck had been restored to look as it did when new, but the landscaper's information on the door includes a modern area code; also, the siren on the front fender, red light on the roof, and twin spotlights suggest this truck, in its earlier life, may have been in a fire department's fleet. I was going to say that the dice hanging from the right spotlight inside the cab are not period-correct -- but I guess they are.

IGLESIA SUPERIOR.-

St Mawes (Cornish: Lannvowsedh) is a small town opposite Falmouth, on the Roseland Peninsula on the south coast of Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. It lies on the east bank of the Carrick Roads, a large waterway created after the Ice Age from an ancient valley which flooded as the melt waters caused the sea level to rise dramatically, creating an immense natural harbour, often claimed to be the third largest in the world. It was once a busy fishing port, but the trade declined during the 20th century and it now serves as a popular tourist location, with many properties in the town functioning as holiday accommodation. The town is in the civil parish of St Just in Roseland. A year-round ferry provides a service to Falmouth, which is less than a mile away by boat, but due to its proximity to the Fal estuary it is some 30 miles away by road. The Place Ferry links the South West Coast Path and operates from Good Friday to the end of October. The town takes its name from the Celtic saint Saint Maudez (Mawe), who may have come from Ireland but is mainly venerated in Brittany. A name: 'Musidum' in Roman times, has subsequently been applied to St. Mawes, although the source is dubious. St Mawes lies within the Cornwall Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). Almost a third of Cornwall has AONB designation, with the same status and protection as a National Park. St Mawes Castle is a well-preserved coastal fortress from the time of Henry VIII, built to counter the invasion threat from the Continent. Charles Henderson, writing in 1925, says of St Mawes, "an ancient fishing town which in late years has assumed the different and more sophisticated character of a watering place". The seal of St Mawes was Az. a bend lozengy Or between a tower in the sinister chief Arg. and a ship with three masts the sail furled in the dexter base of the second, with the legend "Commune Sigillum Burgi de St. Mawes al Mauditt. Just outside the town is a closed British Leyland garage on Polvarth Road which retains the British Leyland logo on a hoarding outside. There have been frequent private visits to St Mawes by members of the Royal Family including HM Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, HRH Princess Margaret and more recently the Duke (Prince Charles) and Duchess of Cornwall who ended their stay in July 2008 by naming the new St Mawes ferry The Duchess of Cornwall. HM The Queen visited St Mawes in 1977 during her Silver Jubilee Tour. In June 2002 for The Queen's Golden Jubilee and, with a brand new cast in June 2012 for the Diamond Jubilee, The Queen's Coronation was re-enacted in great detail by the young people of the village in a ceremony entitled "The Children's Coronation".

CAMP HUMPHREYS — The A Company, 304th Expeditionary Signal Battalion hosted the second annual, 48-hour Memorial Ruck March here. The ruck march was in remembrance of those who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001, in the World Trade Center, Pentagon and United Flight 93.
Military Service Members, Family Members and guests from the Republic of Korea participated in the ruck march resulting in $5,568.47 being donated to the Wounded Warrior Project, which aims to raise awareness and enlist the public’s aid for the needs of injured Service Members.
“The incident on Sept. 11, 2001, was an attack against liberal democracy,” said Pfc. Shin, Joon-young from A Company, 3rd Military Intelligence Battalion.
“I decided to participate in this event to remember innocent lives that were lost on that day and to never forget their sacrifice.”
The American national anthem was sung by Staff. Sgt Angela Allen, from 501st Signal Company, and the Korean national anthem was sung by Cpl. Yoon, Jae Hun, from A Company 304th ESB, during the opening ceremony.
“Sept. 11, 2001, was the day all of our lives changed forever,” said Capt. Stephanie Goggans, the commander of A Company, 304th ESB.
“The lives that were lost that day were not in vain and we will not forget their sacrifice. Today’s ruck march is proof that the American spirit and heart will survive and continue to flourish, even in America’s darkest days,” Goggans added.
The ruck march, which consisted of participants marching around a 7.7-mile course inside Camp Humphreys, lasted from 9 a.m. Sept. 14 to 9 a.m. Sept. 16.
“It (the march) is a good way to exercise and of course to remember 9/11. And it is very important to remember it,” said Spc. Zach Beugli, assigned to the 568th Medical Company (Ground Ambulance).
“I would just like to say thank you to all those who participated, volunteered, donated, or supported this event in any way,” stated Spc. Stephen Kulick from Alpha Company, 304th ESB, who founded and organized this event.
“We were able to raise a substantial donation for the Wounded Warrior Project. The support for this event was great, and next year will be even better,” Kulick added.
Hundreds turn out for Kaiserslautern Special Olympics
By Rick Scavetta, U.S. Army Garrison Kaiserslautern
KAISERSLAUTERN, Germany – Crowds of spectators cheered as MeeHee Ashe and fellow Special Olympics athletes sprinted down the 50-meter track during the annual games held in Enkenbach-Alsenborn.
For those 22 seconds, as she ran under sunny skies beside German and American athletes, Ashe, 27, felt happy, she said. Over the past few weeks, she has been training and preparing herself for the May 5 event – as she has done for more than two decades.
“I like to run,” Ashe said. “I forget about some things and just do it.”
The spring games, sponsored by U.S. Army Garrison Kaiserslautern, included tennis, track & field, badminton, soccer, basketball and volleyball. They have been held in Kaiserslautern Military Community for 28 years – the past 14 years at the German police academy, whose officers also supported the event. In all, more than 800 German and American athletes took part. They were supported by roughly 1,300 volunteers.
Lorelai Browning, 17, a Vilseck High School student carried the Olympic torch into the arena. Her parents, Sgt. 1st Class Henry Browning and his wife Lorenna, watched with pride.
“It’s such an honor for her.” Lorenna Browning said. “We’re so excited.”
Everyone who took part is a winner, said Lt. Col Kevin Hutchison, commander of U.S. Army Garrison Kaiserslautern, during his opening remarks.
“These games are intended to help the athletes gain confidence and build a positive self-image that carries over into the classroom, home, job and community,” Hutchison said. “It also fosters friendships between volunteers and athletes and provides a forum for better understanding of adults and children with intellectual disabilities.”
Nearby, Spc. Brad Abraham, 20, of Turlock, Calif., handed 10-year-old Aaron Evans a bottle of water as the Ramstein Intermediate School student prepared for his sprint. Abraham was among hundreds of Kaiserslautern Soldiers and Airmen who volunteered to support the event.
“In the Army, helping people is part of what we do,” Abraham said. “It’s fun, when you get into it.”
Evans darted down the dusty track, flanked by other children who laughed and smiled as they crossed the finish line. Afterward, Abraham pinned a yellow ribbon to Evans’s blue Special Olympics t-shirt.
“I enjoy seeing kids enjoying this,” Abraham said. “If they’re having fun, then we’re having fun.”
The event marked the second year volunteering for Senior Airman James Carlisle, 29, and engineering assistant from Pascagoula, Miss., who serves with the 86th Civil Engineering Squadron at Ramstein Air Base. He served as a buddy for Dominik Keller, a seven-year-old Kaiserslautern athlete. Carlisle noticed that Keller and other young athletes were not so interested in “hearing all the talk in the beginning,” he said.
“They knew what they wanted when they got here. The first thing out of their mouth was ‘Fussball’ – they wanted to play soccer,” Carlisle said. “They look forward to this all year. It’s really exciting.”
Kids got plastic firefighters’ hats and clambered into U.S. Army Garrison Kaiserslautern fire trucks on display. Nearby, participants made arts and crafts projects and hitched rides on a mini-train.
Garrison volunteers sweated over huge grills, barbequing hundreds of hot dogs and hamburgers.
The final sporting event was a friendly soccer match between German and American athletes. Germany won, 8-0. Then, crowds applauded as Command Sgt. Maj. Richard Jessup led fellow senior enlisted leaders from Kaiserslautern’s Army and Air Force units in the presentation of medallions to athletes.
Ashe climbed the pedestal and slightly bowed to receive her medal, to the cheers of her parents, Charlie and Nelda, plus hundreds of other people crowding the grandstands. Afterward, athletes, volunteers and spectators joined hands in a huge circle and sang “We Are The World.”
“It feels happy inside,” Ashe said. “It’s about winning and it’s not about losing. It’s about having fun.”
