U.S. Army Africa chef earns top honors in culinary competition
By Rick Scavetta, U.S. Army Africa
VICENZA, Italy – When Sgt. Ken Turman drizzled thickened meat juice around a plate of herb pork tenderloin crepinette, he was putting the finishing touches on an entrée that would take top honors at the 35th U.S. Army Culinary Arts Competition.
Turman, a U.S. Army Africa chef who works at Caserma Ederle’s South of the Alps dining facility, served as team captain for U.S. Army Europe’s team during the March 12 competition at Fort Lee, Va.
“Sgt. Turman's performance at the competition was exemplary,” said Maj. L. Trice Burkes, commander of Headquarters Support Company, U.S. Army Africa. “His accolades clearly represent years of commitment to the culinary field. We’re honored to have such an NCO among our ranks.”
Overall, the USARUER team earned 22 gold, nine silver and five bronze awards. The military chefs also earned the top team prize, the Installation of the Year award. It’s the first time since 1992 that a USAREUR team received the title. The USAREUR team also won the best team buffet table award.
“Sgt. Turman showed a keen ability to grasp advanced cookery skills and methods along with understanding the requirements of the rules established for the culinary competition, enabling him to be quite successful,” said Sgt. Maj. Mark Warren, from USAREUR’s logistics directorate, who managed the team.
The meal that won gold for the team included an appetizer of seared salmon on a bed of tagliatelle vegetables, served with a citrus wine cream sauce and tomatoes concasse. The main dish included the herb pork tenderloin crepinette and braised pork belly with savory crimini mushroom bread pudding, plus carrot and ginger puree served with pearl onions, peas and creamed Savoy cabbage. The natural jus-lie – thickened meat sauce – was the final touch.
Following the entrée was a desert of streusel-baked apple with mascarpone cream filling, pistachio sponge cake with raspberry cream and chocolate décor served with warm apples and raspberries in vanilla syrup with lemon.
Turman also served as captain of the student skills team. He received a silver medal in the senior chef of the year category and took gold in both the nutritional hot food challenge and in live hot food cooking. Turman was also selected to represent the Army during the Culinary Olympics World Cup this November in Luxembourg.
Warren is encouraged to see younger chefs like Turman develop skills and study the finer points of cookery, he said.
“I would expect to see great achievements and advancement in his future,” Warren said.

Part of a Set / Slideshow documenting the art works on display at the touring exhibition "Postcards from Japan", subtitled "A message from Tohoku artists". The photographs were taken while the exhibition was hosted by the Embassy of Japan, London, UK.
Title: Extract Light 11011
Artist: ISHIKAWA Minako 石川美奈子 - living in Odawara
Artist's website: www.g-trinity.com/artist/en_ishikawaminako.html [日本語 and English]
Media: Translucent acrylic, tinted with pigments, on translucent acrylic board
The exhibition has been curated and organised by Scottish and Japanese artists and sculptors Kate THOMSON and KATAGIRI Hironori. They are based both in Scotland and their Ukishima Sulpture Studio in Iwate prefecture, part of the Tohoku region. They were living and working in Iwate when the Great Earthquake and Tsunami struck the pacific coast on 11th March 2011.
Electricty, telephone and internet services (fixed and mobile) all stopped (or had to be prioritised for emergency relief purposes), and retail supplies of bottled drinking water and petrol (gasoline) quickly ran out.
Japan Post proved the most resilient communications service for people living in the affected areas. It was often the first service available for people to check on the welfare of friends and relatives. This is the inspiration behind the theme of the exhibition. All the works are A5 postcard sized - measuring 21 x14.8 cm (approximately 8.3 x 5.8 inches).

The exhibition has been supported by the The Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation and The Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation.
Long exposures on a tripod enabled the use of a slow - low noise - sensor setting and small aperture settings to optimise the depth of field. The frames were glazed, and so the art works were photographed at an angle - to avoid reflections of the camera and tripod. A dark coat was also used to minimise visible reflections. The images were subsequently adjusted to appear rectilinear - using Photoshop's lens correction "Perspective" and "Barrel Distortion" functions, and also the "Distort" transformation. This is why the images of the frames have one point perspective, with an offset vanishing point. Some "Smart Sharpening" was also selectively used.

Terceiro do Desafio!

An impressive show of beautiful cars and models
I was really surprised with the extremely friendly behavior of the models I photographed. Despite the huge crowd of a Saturday afternoon I managed to collect some thrilling smiles and poses.
This show was a great opportunity to do a kind of picture I really like: Model Photography.
For all the shots I used my D300 together with my fantastic and sharp Nikon 50mm f/1.4D plus a SB-800 with diffuser mounted on the camera in iTTL mode. It really worked like a charm.

Sometimes I forget that I hate the fashion industry. I mean, aside from all the politics, there is the fact that many of the people who work in it (it is not a stereotype) have quite an attitude. This makes something as simple and lovely as giving a compliment somewhat of a terrifying experience, as the girls will happily sneer and move their Jill Sanders bag closer to their size 00 bony bodies.
Incidentally, the one person who caught my eye more than any of the cliche industry people (+the Olsen twins and related celebrities) at the Isaac Mizhrai for QVC preview was miss Jennifer here. Whose classic movie starlet looks and darling accessories (those shoes!) were hard not to want to remember. Turns out Jennifer is a blogger (yay!), over at entertainment/fashion/gossip/lifestyle blog Scenestirz. So called "recession socialites" who I much prefer over the "real" socialites.

The rooftop garden of the building which appears from the Victoria peak of Hong Kong was photographed in the style of a miniature garden. although it does not understand whether it is an apartment, whether it is a home, and whether they are some institutions -- the merit of a feeling -- it is the roof where that is right.

Geschichte
******************************************************************************************************************
.
.
.
E.rfurt P, B.erlin Ahb, H.amm, M.agdeburg Hbf, K.assel, H.annover, H.amburg A.ltona, B.ebra und
O.ffenburg.
Ab 1.9.3.1 folgten die Stationierungs-Bw F.rankfurt (M) 1, B.erlin L.eb, B.raunschweig, B.erlin P.og,
S.chneidemühl, K.önigsberg, G.öttingen P, P.aderborn, D.resden A.lt, B.reslau, K.öln D.eutzerfeld,
H.of und H.alle P.

1.9.9.3 wieder in Dienst.
blechs.

Ab machine workout -Lower ab workouts - abtekk.com/abtekk-give-away - Win a FREE Ab Workout set worth a whopping £100. In today's busy world, staying fit and healthy can seem like an impossible task. It doesn't have to be that way. There are any number of surprisingly easy ways you can get yourself into great shape without having to kill yourself. The tips in this article will help you on your way.No matter what your gender happens to be, you should still do strength training as part of your exercise routine. You don't have to worry about bulking up and looking like a body builder unless you actively try for that result. Those types of builds don't happen overnight and a casual person won't achieve those builds. To increase your endurance, breathe fully and from your diaphragm when you exercise, particularly when running. This increases your oxygen intake and your lung capacity and lets you exercise longer. If you don't know how to breathe from your diaphragm, you can lie down and put something on your stomach, then practice making it rise and fall as you inhale and exhale. If you want to get in shape using yoga, do your yoga stretches and poses on a hard surface. For more Info on Ab Workout see here: www.youtube.com/playlist?playnext=1&list=PLvR-rVWiRMP... Practicing on a soft floor can lead to joint injuries and can throw off your balance, which will reduce the effectiveness of your yoga routine. In a reverse of the common practice, you can place a hard, smooth material onto a soft carpet to create the ideal yoga surface.Even though it is vital, sleep is often overlooked when one plans a fitness regimen. Ab machine workout The modern world tends to encourage one to sleep less and less. This is a mistake if one wants to get fit. Sleep is crucial in restoring the body and maintaining energy levels. Get at least seven hours of sleep every night to stay fit and healthy. Take time to stretch in between sets of weightlifting. Research has shown that people who stretch while waiting to start their next set of lifting weights have stronger muscles than those who just sit and wait between sets. Stretching is a little thing you can do to strengthen yourself while you're resting. To have a healthy body it is important to have a good amount of sleep. The body needs to sleep to rejuvenate, this should not be taken for granted. Sleeping for eight hours maintains the body's healthy immune system, helps the individual manage stress better. So be sure to get a good amount of sleep daily.Exercising increases the oxygen to the brain. Studies have proven that incorporating an exercise program to your daily routine will decrease the chance of getting dementia in up to 60% in older adults. Exercising releases proteins that strengthens the brain's neurons and cells which is directly related to memory and learning. A high calorie diet will allow for you to fully utilize your workout. You will be using the calories to provide energy and make your workout last longer. Ab machine workout This will allow your muscles to grow because the intense workout causes small tears and once healed makes the muscles stronger and also increase in size.Set goals. Whatever exercise you choose to pursue, set weekly goals and track your progress. You may set any goal appropriate for your fitness level, but the key is to persistently follow through on your plan. Record your daily workouts on a chart or keep a simple tally indicating that you completed the exercises you had planned to do.Taking the proper supplements can assure that ones body is getting all the needed nutrients to improve fitness and refuel after exercising. Research should be done to decide what the best amounts for that individual will be. However with the right balance supplements will improve the results of exercising and increase overall fitness. Runners can effectively increase their overall speed not by increasing the length of each running stride, but by trying to increase the actual speed of each individual stride. In the ideal stride, your foot should always land on the ground directly beneath your body instead of landing in front of you.Improve your volleyball contact skills. You may not believe it, but playing foosball is a great way to do this. You need similar skills in foosball as you need in volleyball. These skills can then be improved on and can work great in volleyball. When you need shoes for working out, be sure that they fit properly. Go shoe shopping in the evening time. When it is late in the day, your feet are the largest. When trying on the shoes, be sure that you can wiggle your toes and that you have about a half inch of space between your longest toe and the shoe.

Tuesday 13 August 2013 - Day 25 - Llulluch'apampa / Llulluchapampa (3,650m) - Abra de Huarmiwanusca / Warmiwañusca / Dead Woman's Pass (4,200m) - Pacaymayo Alto campsite (3,595m) - Runkurakay / Runccuracay (3,760 m) - Runkuraqay / Runccuracay Pass (3,985m) - Chaquiqocha (3,576m) - Phuyupatamarka / Phuyupatamarca (3,650m)
Day 3 on the Camino Inka features the (in)famous Abra de Huarmiwanusca / Warmiwañusca (4,200 m / 13,780 ft) aka Dead Woman's Pass - the highest point of the trek. The condition of the trail and our Huayhuash acclimatisation made the 550 m ascent from the Llulluch'apampa / Llulluchapampa campsite easy going.
Great views from the pass, both back down the valley we'd ascended and also ahead into the Pacaymayo valley, which featured a LOT of stone steps..... These were to prove hard going on the knees as we dropped 800 m to the Pacaymayo Alto campsite (3,595 m). After coffee and an early sandwich at the Pacaymayo checkpoint it was time to start climbing again, with the small circular Inca tambo (inn) at Runkurakay / Runccuracay (3,760 m) providing a beacon to aim for, and then more up to reach the Runkuraqay / Runccuracay Pass (3,985 m) by which time the views were a little less good, as cloud clung to the peaks of the Vilcabamba range.
According to the trip notes the post-Runkuraqay / Runccuracay Pass section of the path is "paved with the original Inca stones" - my main memory is of our first Inca tunnel, yet more steps, colourful flowers and - in time - the Inca ruins at Sayaqmarka / Sayacmarca (3,625m) "the place with a dominant view", which we didn't visit. Not long after Sayaqmarka / Sayacmarca the path entered beautiful bamboo forests. Very zen.
A leisurely lunch at Chaquiqocha (3,576m) looking out over the Aobamba Valley, and then onwards through forests, Inca tunnels and - eventually - our final campsite, Phuyupatamarka / Phuyupatamarca (3,650m). En route, a few flashes of bright green as packs of parakeets wooshed by, beautiful flowers and a stunning section of colourful moss covering the cliffside. The clouds gathered too.
The aptly named 'Town in the Clouds' camp proved to be packed, understandably so once we saw the views further south, not just the Inca ruins just below the campsite, but ridge upon forested ridge, snow sprinkled to our east, dramatic sunlight streaked clouds, rain and rainbows, and the first mobile phone signal since Ollantaytambo (probably - I didn't have my phone with me) courtesy of Aguas Calientes nestling in the Urubamba Valley 1,610 m (1 vertical mile) below.
All in all the best day of the trek by some margin. According to my calculations we climbed (and descended) over 1,000m / 3280 ft over the course of the day despite there being no net change in altitude.
