24th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of African Union Heads of State and Government Begins in Addis Ababa

PRESS RELEASE Nº24/24th AU SUMMIT

24TH ORDINARY SESSION OF THE ASSEMBLY OF AFRICAN UNION HEADS OF STATE AND GOVERNMENT BEGINS IN ADDIS ABABA

Addis Ababa Ethiopia, 30 January 2015-The 24th summit of the Heads of State and Government of the African Union, which started in Addis Ababa today has heard from distinguished speakers of the progress and some of the challenges that Africa faces, as well as proposals for the way forward. The opening ceremony of the summit also saw the election of Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe as the Union’s Chairperson for the year 2015.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 24th summit of the African Union today, Dr DlaminiZuma said Africa has no choice but to move forward and upwards. The continent, she said, has been climbing, “a step at a time, up the steep cliff towards peace, prosperity and the restoration of the dignity of its people”.

She projected that the present generation is the one that will eradicate poverty, disease and hunger. “We are the generation that shall manage diversity and silence the guns”, she added.

The Chairperson recalled that, at the 50th anniversary celebrations of the Organisation of African Unity in 2013, the continent’s resolve to be in charge of its destiny, informed its decision to develop Agenda 2063 “through a people-driven process for the realization of our vision for an integrated, people-centred, prosperous Africa at peace with itself”. The Agenda 2063 framework document will be presented for adoption by the Heads of State and Government today.

Agenda 2063 outlines the aspirations and the concrete programmes to steer the continent for the next fifty years: to diversify African economies and industrialise; to have a skills and entrepreneurial revolution, unleashing the creativity and energy of young people, and to effect an agricultural and agro-processing transformation, so that Africa can feed itself and contribute to feeding the world.

The summit of African Union Heads of State and Government is being held under the theme “Year of Women’s Empowerment and Development”. Various speakers at the summit’s opening ceremony expressed their commitment to mainstreaming women in all socio- economic activities, with Malawian President Mr PeterMutharika dedicating his entire statement to the topic. He outlined major successes achieved by his country, but also mentioned the challenges they face. However he gave his commitment that his government will continue to strive to achieve gender equality. United Nations Secretary General Mr Ban Ki Moon also expressed strong support for the AU’s annual theme: “Women must be at the center and front of all our lives”, he said.

Issues of peace and security dominated many of the presentations by the African and visiting Heads of State and Government. President of the State of Palestine and Chairperson of the Palestine Liberation Organisation Executive Committee Mr Mahmoud Abbas spoke of his government’s desire and the efforts being exerted to achieve a Palestinian state living side by side with the state of Israel.

Many of the leaders condemned terrorism in very strong terms, with then outgoing Chairperson of the African Union Mr Mohammed Ould Abdelaziz saying, “Terrorism remains a global scourge and fighting it requires cooperation at the international level.”AUC Chairperson Dr Dlamini Zuma also cautioned that Africa should be aware of the new global threats such as terrorism, insecurity and climate change. “Terrorism, in particular the brutality of Boko Haram against our people, the senseless killings, the destruction of property, the enslavement and sale of our people, our girls kidnapped and married, and the terrorization of villages, are a threat to our collective safety, security and development”.

The Ebola virus disease that affected mostly three countries in West Africa attracted a lot of attention at the meeting of the Heads of State and Government. AU Commission Chairperson Dr NkosazanaDlaminiZuma praised the work of the 835 African health workers who were deployed to Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone under the banner of the African Union Support to the Ebola Outbreak in West Africa (ASEOWA). She also extended her gratitude to the ASEOWA head of mission Dr Julius Oketta and the African private sector that is raising funds to keep the health workers on the ground until the affected countries are declared Ebola free. There are signs that, due to the work of the ASEOWA health workers among others, the Ebola crisis is now abating, with the incidents of infection and death from the disease vastly decreasing.

Tunisian President Mr Beji Caid Essebsi informed the summit that “the democratic process chosen by Tunisians is irreversible”. Tunisians, he said, had proven that the people of Africa can build the continent with their own hands. He also said Tunisia is proud of being African.

New Zambian President Mr Edgar Lungu thanked the African Union for supporting his country through the death of Mr Michael Satain October 2014 and the subsequent elections that ushered him into power. He thanked the Southern African Development Community, the AU and other organisations that sent in election monitors. Zambia, he said, has demonstrated that it is possible to have peaceful elections, and pledged that Zambia will actively participate in the affairs of the Union.

The late Zambian President meanwhile was honoured by his colleagues and other delegates by a one minute silence in his memory.

Outgoing Namibian President Mr HifikinyePohambawas given a chance to bid farewell to his colleagues at today’s opening ceremony of the Assembly.

New AU Chairperson Mr Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe meanwhile accepted his position by saying "By electing me to preside over this august body, with full knowledge of the onerous responsibility that lies ahead, I humbly accept your collective decision". He urged Africa to take charge of its destiny and pledged to work for Africa’s development particularly through infrastructure development. He then proceeded to launch the theme of the year, i.e. “Women’s Empowerment and Development towards Agenda 2063”.

The meeting of African Heads of State and Government will conclude on Saturday 31st January with the adoption of decisions and declarations to guide the work of the African Union this year.

This famous church on the hill above Zakynthos Town was the meeting place in Zakynthos of the Filiki Etairia, the Company of Friends, a group of prominent Greek nationalists and patriots who were influential in setting the scene for, and fighting in, the Greek War of Independence which began in 1821. Their monument is in the courtyard behind the church.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crow

Though humans cannot generally tell individual crows apart, crows have been shown to have the ability to visually recognize individual humans, and to transmit information about "bad" humans by squawking.

As a group, the crows show remarkable examples of intelligence, and Aesop's fable of The Crow and the Pitcher shows that humans have long viewed the crow as an intelligent bird. Crows and ravens often score very highly on intelligence tests. Wild hooded crows in Israel have learned to use bread crumbs for bait-fishing. One species, the New Caledonian Crow, has also been intensively studied recently because of its ability to manufacture and use its own tools in the day-to-day search for food. These tools include 'knives' cut from stiff leaves and stiff stalks of grass. Another skill involves dropping tough nuts into a heavy trafficked street and waiting for a car to crush them open, and then waiting at pedestrian lights with other pedestrians in order to retrieve the nuts.

D.T. Rubén Omar Romano.

Guadalajara: Luis Michel (Hugo

Hernández), Omar Esparza, Néstor Vidrio, Kristian Álvarez, Miguel Ponce, Antonio Gallardo, Patricio Araujo, Jesús Sánchez (Michael Pérez), Carlos Fierro, Rafael Márquez Lugo y Aldo de Nigris.

St Mary, Huntingfield, Suffolk

Follow these journeys as they happen at Last of England twitter.

It was the first day of the 2019 Easter holidays, and what better way to spend a Monday morning than heading off for a church-exploring bike ride rather than going to work? I caught the train up to Halesworth, and then cycled off out into the hills. The villages and their pretty parish churches come thick and fast around here, and almost all of them are open to pilgrims and strangers daily. There is a good mixture too, round towers, square towers, hardly-any-left towers, reed-thatched roofs, beflinted-porches, and all manner of treasures inside. A fair number of East Anglia's best small churches are in this area. But even given this variety, there is nowhere else in East Anglia quite like Huntingfield church.

This is one of Suffolk's more obscure villages, but the Huntingfield name was that of one of the county's most significant families. Huntingfield is the nearest village to the great pile of Heveningham Hall, with one of the largest Georgian frontages in England. It was rebuilt by the Huntingfields in the 18th Century. Standing on the road and looking across the sheep-scattered lawns to the great building, it is easy to imagine the gulf between the landed gentry and their poor workers in those days. Sandwiched between the traumas of the 17th Century and the energy of the 19th Century, it was the landowners of the 18th Century who had every reason to think that their world was permanent and unchanging, that it would always be as they knew it. Farming sheep, collecting art, patronising musicians, tinkering with primitive science and technology, dispensing benevolent largesse to the poor on their estate - it is a world that is at once attractive and appalling. For them, the Church of England was both an arm of the state dispensing laws, justice and charity, and the setting for the weekly liturgical reinforcement of the puritan-refracted Elizabethan settlement.

But the Industrial Revolution would bring it all to an end, and in more ways than one. In the second half of the latter century, many parish churches were drawn by the excitement of the age into major reconstructions and revisions. Their impulse came from Oxford, where the Tractarians had a vision of the Church of England as a national Church, no longer a protestant sect but restored to the catholicity of its roots, and from Cambridge, where the ecclesiologists decided what a building of the national Church should properly look like. As the young men graduated and were presented to parishes across the country, their ideas spread like wildfire. They had come from their univserities to churches fitted out for protestant worship, with whitewashed walls and box pews focused on the high pulpit, the rarely-used altar gathering dust in the chancel or even discarded. Preaching houses rather than sacramental spaces, and any surviving traces of the building's medieval life survived, perhaps, simply because they were not understood.

Essentially, what happened in England between about 1830 and 1870 was a cultural revolution, a new wave of ideas and the reaction to them. The litugical changes proposed by the Oxford Movement were, at first, objectionable, and then merely controversial. But gradually they seeped into the mainstream, until by about 1890 they had become as natural as the air we breathe. Galvanised by the ferment of ideas and the possibilities of the industrial age, these young men convinced their rich patrons, revolutionised their buildings, and in so doing altered their parishes forever. They often looked to London stars like Scott and Butterfield, or local plodders like Phipson, or else mavericks like Salvin. The demands of the new liturgical arrangements, coupled with a renewed sense of the need to glorify God, led them into what was often a rebuilding rather than a restoration.

Internal decorations were, perhaps, the bespoke work of the architect, Witness Phipson's meticulous attention to detail at St Mary le Tower, Ipswich. Other restorers relied on the big picture, a vision that encompassed walls and floors, but left the fittings to others. By the centenary of the movement in the 1930s, one Anglican clergyman could observe "It is as if the Reformation had never happened". Well, not quite. And now, the pendulum has swung the other way, leaving the ritualists high and dry. But the evidence of the energy of those days survives, especially at Huntingfield, where William Holland, the vicar, drove the Oxford Movement through the heart of the parish, like a motorway through a Site of Special Scientific Interest.

The Hollands were the patrons of the living, which gave them the authority and the money to reimagine Huntingfield church on a grand scale. Oxford and Cambridge universites were exclusively for men, of course, but it so happened that William Holland had an energetic and visionary wife. Between 1859 and 1866, Mrs Mildred Holland planned, designed and executed the most elaborate redecoration of a church this county had seen since the Reformation. For seven years, she lay on her back at the top of scaffolding, first in the chancel (angels) and then in the nave (saints on the ceilure, fine angels on the beam ends), gilding, lettering and painting this most glorious of small church roofs. Her husband kept a journal throughout this period, and there is no suggestion that she had any assistance, beyond that of workmen to raise the scaffolding, and a Mr E.L. Blackburne FSA, who was, apparently, an 'authority on medieval decoration'. J.P. St Aubyn was responsible for the structural restoration of this largely 15th century building, and it is very restrained and merciful. But you come here to see the painted roofs, which are perfectly splendid. You can activate the floodlighting with a pound coin in a box at the west end of the north aisle, and the illuminated work is breath-taking.

What else is there to see? Some 15th Century window borders in the east window of the south aisle depict hares and a little dog with a bell around his neck. And what is that at the bottom, a dragon, or a winged lion? Evidence of the church's continued High Church tradition into the 20th Century is in statues of the Blessed Virgin and child flanked by St Francis and St Dominic in a triple image niche set in a pillar of the north arcade. Was it originally for a rood group, perhaps above an altar? Any church is a palimpsest, history written and rewritten over its skin as a touchstone to changing liturgical imperatives and the long generations of its people. Across this canvas the enthusiasms and Huntingfield in Mildred Holland's time are writ large, and will last long.

And there is something else, and a great curiosity. Ann Owen, the Vicar's wife in the neighbouring parish of Heveningham, is also said to have been responsible for 19th Century work in the church there, this time in the form of stained glass. Visiting Heveningham, I am afraid it is difficult for me to find this convincing, although of course one likes to think it was so, and that the two women artists were friends, or possibly even rivals. But Mildred's story has been brilliantly captured in a recent novel, The Huntingfield Paintress by Pamela Holmes. Pamela tells me that 'it was a comment of yours about Mildred and Ann Owen which sparked my determination to write my first novel' which is very kind of her, although I am sure it was easy to be inspired when one stands here surrounded by Mildred Holland's work.

You might thnk that the towering font cover is also by her, but in fact it is her memorial, placed here by her husband, as is the art nouveau lectern. It is as if her art was a catalyst, inspiring others to acts of beauty. She died in the 1870s, predeceasing her husband by twenty years. They are both now buried by the churchyard gate. How fitting, that they should lie in the graveyard of the church they loved so much, and to which they gave so much of their time, energy and money.

The CPE law has been promulgated on 2 April, but President Jacques Chirac pledged that it would be amended and the government asked employers not to apply it immediately. Meanwhile, the anti-CPE movement hasn't backed down: a national strike was called and massive rallies were held throughout France on April 4th, drawing as many participants as on March 28th (1 to 3 millions nation-wide). Riots erupted again at the end of the demonstration, Place d'Italie.

Here, undercover cops are arresting a protester while riot police is coming to back them up.

from the Sumaco Volcano expedition with herpetologists Alejandro Arteaga, Konrad Mebert, Darwin Nuñez and Abel Batista, with support from Juan Manuel Guayasamin, Universidad Tecnológica Indoamérica, and the guides from Pacto Sumaco: Jhoseph Andi, Germanico Ruiz, Oscar Trujillo

This week the Sunday Club members Dave K and I visited the Bleanavon Heritage Railway.

Locomotive details-

Builder: R. Stephenson & Hawthorn Ltd., Newcastle-on-Tyne.

Built: 1945, works no.7169

Wheel Arrangement: 0-6-0ST

Wheel diameter: 4’ 3”

Boiler Pressure: 170psi.

Weight : 48 tons 5 cwt.

71515 was commissioned by the War Department in 1945 from Robert Stevenson and Hawthorns as WD71515, but, with WW2 all but over, was quickly put to work at the Swalwell Disposal Point in what was then the county of Durham, but is now Tyne & Wear. At the time the opencast disposal point was worked by Mechanical Navvies Limited, and it is in that company’s livery that the loco now appears.

It was taken into preservation by 1974 to the East Somerset Railway, where shortly after arrival she was was liveried in BR black with the spurious running number 68005.

By 1995 she was in service at the Bolton and Embsay Railway, still in BR black and where she was nicknamed ‘The Mog’. She was overhauled in 2004, but burst a boiler tube two years later and was laid aside.

Three years later, following interest shown by a PBR member, she was purchased in August 2009, and in the following month, taken to the Flour Mill works in the Forest of Dean for repair, and repainting into her original colour. She arrived at Furnace Sidings on 28 April 2010, and has worked the majority of services scheduled for steam haulage since. Her sure-footed bark as she tackles the steep grade between bridge 16 and Whistle Inn, and mournful Midland-style hooter is a familiar sound over Blaenavon.

FC «Volga» - www.fcvolgann.ru/ - was created in 1963 by a merger of two clubs: «Torpedo» and «Raketa». After the first season «Volga» was able to get to the top division. «Volga» spent a season in the top football society under the sign of embarrassing mistakes and fatal bad luck. Our team’s fate has been settled in an additional match for the 13th place. «Torpedo Kutaisi» was our opponent. Georgians won with a 4:2 score, and «Volga» lost its place in the first group of Class «A». Then «Volga» took the 4 th place in the 1968 season in the second group «A» class (similar to the current First division) and thrice (1971, 1972 and 1974) our team became the bronze medalist of zonal tournament in the second league. «Volga» participated in the championships of the USSR until the season of 1984.

In 2008 FC «Volga» won a first place in the area of the «Ural-Volga» region of second division. It also won the PFL Cup, a tournament of winners of five zones of the second division. «Volga» played with teams from Premier League in the Cup of Russia. Our club defeated «Saturn», but «Tom» was stronger in the penalty shoot-out. «Volga’s»debut in the first division was successful. In 2009, the team demonstrated a nice game and good results. The club made record series of 16 consecutive matches without loss. In addition, our guys took first place in the second round and became the fourth team of the First Division in season of 2009. In May 2010 Omari Tetradze became a head coach of the club. Under his leadership the club resulted in a second place. ‘Volga» got the largest number of victories (10), scored the most goals (62) and lost the fewest games (5). Our Pacesetter Coach trip started from Dover to Ostend on the Channel Ferry. Bruges, Berlin, Prague, Krakow, Warsaw, Brest, Minsk, Smolensk, Moscow, Kalinin, Novgorod, Leningrad, Helsinki. When we reached Helsinki we found out that Pacesetter had gone bust. All the Pacesetter buses had to return immediately to London by order of the company receivers. Fortunately for us Pacesetter had hired a coach from an owner operator for our trip [Pommy Tim]. At his suggestion we all kicked in an extra 25 quid each to continue the trip as planned. From Helsinki we headed North through Finland and Lapland to Hammerfest in Norway [well within the Arctic Circle and land of the midnight sun]. Heading South through Norway to Oslo, across to Stockholm in Sweden, down to Malmo and on the Ferry to Copenhagen, Hamburg, Amsterdam, Ostend and back to Dover. Six wonderful weeks in all.

In 1969 and 1970, Heyerdahl built two boats from papyrus and attempted to cross the Atlantic Ocean from Morocco in Africa. Based on drawings and models from ancient Egypt, the first boat, named Ra (after the Egyptian Sun god), was constructed by boat builders from Lake Chad using papyrus reed obtained from Lake Tana in Ethiopia and launched into the Atlantic Ocean from the coast of Morocco. The Ra crew included Thor Heyerdahl (Norway), Norman Baker (USA), Carlo Mauri (Italy), Yuri Senkevich (USSR), Santiago Genoves (Mexico), Georges Sourial (Egypt), Abdullah Djibrine (Chad). After a number of weeks, Ra took on water after its crew made modifications to the vessel that caused it to sag and break apart. The ship was abandoned and the following year, another similar vessel, Ra II, was built of totora by Demetrio, Juan and Jose Limachi from Lake Titicaca in Bolivia and likewise set sail across the Atlantic from Morocco, this time with great success. The crew was mostly the same, only Djibrine had been replaced by Japanese Kei Ohara and Madani Ait Ouhanni (from Morocco). The boat reached Barbados, thus demonstrating that mariners could have dealt with trans-Atlantic voyages by sailing with the Canary Current.
