As Blake Island marine host volunteers, we received free moorage and power, but we worked VERY hard for the priviledge.

The Forest Service’s Pacific Northwest Region hosted a public field tour at the Wind River Experimental Forest, located within the Gifford Pinchot National Forest in Washington state. This tour highlighted old-growth trees, the unique characteristics of old-growth forests, and information about the Forest Service’s National Old Growth Amendment.
The Wind River Experimental Forest's old-growth stands, primarily composed of Douglas-fir and western hemlock, are living testaments to the ancient and intricate ecosystems of the Pacific Northwest. Some trees here have stood for over 400 years, surrounded by a diverse understory of shrubs like salal and huckleberries, and ground plants such as trillium and beargrass. These forests are vital sanctuaries for wildlife, including the federally threatened Northern spotted owl.
Since the early 1900s, these venerable woods have been pivotal in forest ecology research, guiding sustainable management practices. With over 80% of the region's remaining old growth on federal land, policies like the 1994 Northwest Forest Plan, its upcoming amendment, and the Forest Service’s National Old Growth Amendment underscore the importance of protecting these irreplaceable habitats.
Malaysia’s prominent University of University Putra Malaysia (UPM) is slated to host a Nanoscience and Nanotechnology Development Forum in collaboration with Mustafa(pbuh) Science and Technology Foundation (MSTF) under Science and Technology Exchange Program (STEP) among Muslim Countries on December 19-23 this year.
According to the Mustafa(pbuh) Prize Public Relations and Communications (MPRC), MSTF aims to appreciate scientists in the Islamic world by awarding the Mustafa Prize biennially and strengthening the scientific collaboration globally through STEP.
MSTF has organized December’s forum in collaboration with the UPM. The main goal of the five-day event is to provide a platform for outstanding Muslims scientists to network and cooperate with each other.
The event will be attended by renowned Muslim scientists and academics from across the world, including Professor Jackie Ying from Singapore and Professor Omar Yaghi from Jordan; who were the laureates of the first edition of the Mustafa(pbuh) Prize held last year.
The forum will discuss the global science and its emergence as the universal language of peace and welfare, the challenges faced by Muslim countries in nano-science and nanotechnology fields and ways to boost scientific cooperation among Muslim nations.
Omar Yaghi will be the main lecturer of the forum. His lecture will focus on the applications of Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) in clean energy. Professor Jackie Ying will also deliver a speech on “nanotechnology from research level to commercialization”.
On the sidelines of the event, two professional workshops will be held which will focus on procedures of registering a patent as well as research outcomes communication through more effective paper publication.
Organizers hope that December’s forum will draw more attention to the achievements of Muslim scientists. They say more such forums will be held in major academic centers of the Muslim countries in order to expand the scope of the prize’s activities in the realm of science.
