During the second weekend of April, once again the Erie community hosted Erie's exclusive Bear Weekend known as Drenched Fur. This time the 'Best Little Run for Fun' brought together hundreds of men hailing from around the tri-state area and as far away as Chicago, San Francisco, DC, and Toronto.

Erie has been annual hosting Drenched Fur for twelve years allowing men to appreciate each other and their natural masculinity.

On Friday night, DJ Tony Ruiz returned for the "Locker Room" themed dance. The main event for Drenched Fur is an exclusive Saturday night time private event at Splash Lagoon, our local indoor water park resort. In addition to enjoying the fun wet times there, the weekend this year also included Bear-e-oke, BEAR Bingo, a Winery Tour to North East, PA, and this year's game show spoof, Furry Feud. Sunday morning the weekend wrapped up with the charity silent auction which raised over $1,000 for the Mental Health Association of Northwestern PA.

The Drenched Fur 12 Committee did an amazing job hosting one of the biggest events for Erie's GLBTQA community and thanks all the individuals and businesses that helped make this year a success. To find out more about Drenched Fur, you can visit www.drenchedfur.com to review our photo gallery from over the years. And don't miss out on next years installment of DF13 to be held March 30 - April 2 in 2017!

Hosted in various locations throughout Mercer County, the 2021 Summer Sports Finals was the culminating event for our summer season featuring athletes competing in seven sports.

In fashion, they say everything old begins new again. This season’s finest example may be couture designer Naeem Khan’s Art Deco inspired fashion show. A mainstay on Awards Show Red Carpets and First Lady Michelle Obama, Naeem Khan has made a name for himself as one of America’s most successful and iconic high end designers.

Originally from Mumbai, India, Khan has long had a love of clothes and appreciation for textiles. He moved to the United States as a teenager where he was an apprentice for Halston. He launched his label in 2003 to immediate global success. A favorite of Michelle Obama, Naeem Khan’s designed have also been worn by Beyoncé, Carrier Underwood, Eva Longoria, Penelope Cruz, Leighton Meester, and others. His clothes are best known for their exquisite fit and modern sensibility. In 2008, Naeem Khan was named to the prestigious council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA.)

For this year’s collection recently debuted at New York Fashion Week, Naeem Khan said he wanted to add more glamour. Describing his Art Deco looks as “Super Glam,” Khan says he was inspired by famous artist Erte. Considered the father of Art Deco, Erte’s looks defined the 1920s and 30s. Interestingly enough, Khan’s take is not the first update of the Art Deco movement. IN the 1960s, Erte himself propelled an Art Deco resurgence that not only breathed new life into a second phase successful art career, but also influenced architecture, design, and fashion.

Drawing on Erte for inspiration is also not a fear reach, unlike artists who paint still lifes or landscapes, Erte’s work primarily focused on fashion. During his career, Erte worked as a costume designer and created covers for iconic fashion magazines like Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue. His most famous fine art featured women fashionably dressed in Art Deco clothing. Erte is the most famous fashion artist of all time, and his legacy has inspired virtually every aspect of twentieth century design since.

Naeem Khan updated Erte’s classic French Art Deco aesthetic to bring it into the modern era. He combined influences form the Ottoman and Byzantine Empires to add a feeling of luscious opulence. He also streamlined the looks so they look at home in place of the modern woman who looks for simple, clean lines and flattering silhouettes. The results are looks that borrow heavily from the past, but are also thoroughly modern. Stacy Keibler (who you may know better as George Clooney’s girlfriend,) wore a stunning Naeem Khan Erte inspired Art Deco gown to this year’s Academy Awards. Since Naeem Khan is a favorite on red carpets everywhere there is no doubt we will soon be seeing more Erte inspired looks.

Naeem Khan will present his 2013 Fall Collection with Neiman Marcus at the annual Globe Guilders’s Fashion Show and luncheon on May 21 in San Diego. The event will be held at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront, 1 Park Blvd. Proceeds will go to The Old Globe Theatre, San Diego’s largest performing arts institution.

These small fungi, with small stems and cauliflower shaped heads, grow on insects such as weta, cicadas and beetles. On a photo of the same species that I took a week ago, I also described how this fungi has been used to derive a drug for the treatment of Multiple Sclerosis.

Pixelreflux and Petraliaw have both found pictures of the insects that this fungi has been hosted by. I took another trip to Maungatautari, to see if I could find another specimen, and was lucky enough to so so. It is hard to see from the photo that the white encased object on the right is the remains of a cicada with fungi growth. The small fungi on the left were growing above the ground where the cicada was located.

I took the specimens back to the visitor centre at Maungatautari, and entertained a few children and their parents for an hour or so talking about what I had found, together with a cordyceps fungi mummified caterpillar. The kids especially seemed to enjoy the thought of "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" chomping into a stray fungi spore, sealing it's fate. (I actually do not know how the host insect is initially infected)

The Host project suggests that for a moment we abandon our anthropomorphic worldview and think about life (well actually think about sex) from the perspective of an insect. We are invited to join an audience of 200 live crickets, who are attending a very serious scientific lecture on the sex life of insects, which we quickly realise is rather more complex and interesting than our own! One screen shows the heavily pixelated talking-head of the scientist, the other an image of an oscilloscope signal. The oscilloscope image with its crackling sound-track was obtained under laboratory conditions and is a direct recording of the electrical activity in the aural nerve centre of a cricket listening to the sex lecture. From one perspective the creature becomes a type of electro-physiological microphone—but at a deeper metaphorical level we are asked to re-consider our own perceptual assumptions about the world.

I was distressed to learn that Jim Wilder passed away in December. Jim had promoted and hosted bluegrass festivals in Charlotte and Milan, Michigan, for many years. I'm gonna miss him.

Over the years I figure I spent a hundred days or so at the Charlotte show, which billed itself as "Michigan's Oldest Continuously-Held Bluegrass Festival." Wilder was the festival's third proprietor.

A partial list of bands we've seen and heard in Charlotte would begin with Ralph Stanley and the Clinch Mountain Boys, and would continue with Jim & Jesse, the Osborne Brothers, and Jimmy Martin. We've heard the Bluegrass Cardinals, the Seldom Scene, the New Coon Creek Girls, and the Dry Branch Fire Squad. Rhonda Vincent's been a regular of late, as have IIIrd Tyme Out, Charlie Sizemore, the Grascals, Audie Blaylock, and Del McCoury. Dailey and Vincent showed up one year; so did Lou Reed, and so did Dale Ann Bradley. Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver performed here from time to time. And Jim's predecessor John Morris brought us Wade Mainer, a recording pioneer who pre-dated even Bill Monroe as a radio star.

Of course, Bill and his (late-model) Bluegrass Boys graced the Charlotte stage for several years.

This list of highlights doesn't begin to exhaust the range of talent Wilder and his predecessors brought to our community in forty years of festivals.

Looks like the Milan festival will be held this summer, but Charlotte's probably going to be scrubbed. Let's hope it's a short break, rather than an ending. [See Below]

Jim's health's been obviously problematical for the past few years, and I made it a point to thank him last June for bringing a weekend of joy into my life every summer. He credited Faye, claiming "she did all the work." So I thanked her, too.

Gonna miss you, guy. Thanks again.

Ragusa Ibla hosts a wide array of Baroque architecture, including several stunning palaces and churches. The Cathedral of San Giorgio was built starting in 1738 by architect Rosario Gagliardi, in substitution of the temple destroyed by the 1693 earthquake, and of which only a Catalan-Gothyic style portal can still be seen. The façade is characterized by a flight of 250 steps and by massive ornate columns, as well as by statues of saints and decorated portals. The interior has a Latin cross plan, with a nave and two aisles ending in half-circular apses. It is topped by a large Neoclassical dome built in 1820.On a narrow winding street that connects Ragusa Ibla (the new name of R. Inferiore, taken by a legendary Greek town maybe risen here) with Ragusa Superiore is the church of Santa Maria delle Scale ("Saint Mary of the Steps", built between the fifteenth and the sixteenth centuries). This church is particularly interesting: badly damaged in the earthquake of 1693, half of this church was rebuilt in Baroque style, while the surviving half was kept in the original Gothic (including the three Catalan-style portals in the right aisle). The last chapel of the latter has a Renaissance portal. The chapels have canvases from some Sicilian painters of the 18th century.

The Church of the Souls of the Purgatory has a Baroque portal. The church of Santa Maria dell'Itria, built by the Knights of Malta in the seventeenth century, has a campanile with ceramics from Caltagirone and a canvas attributed to Mattia Preti. The church of San Giorgio, designed by Rosario Gagliardi and built in 1739–1775, has a façade with tiers of juxtaposed columns. The Treasury contains silver items of value. Similar though smaller is the nearby church of St. Joseph, with an elliptic interior housing a seventeenth-century statue of the dedicatee. The church of Sant'Antonino is an example of Norman architecture, characterized by a Gothic portal, while the Church of Immacolata boasts a fine fourteenth-century portal.San Giorgio Vecchio has a re-entrant façade with a notable Gothic-Catalan portal, with a high relief on the lunetta portraying St. George Killing the Dragon, and Aragonese eagles. The Hyblean Garden offers a panorama on the three churches of the Cappuccini Vecchi, St. James (fourteenth century) and San Domenico. The Zacco Palace is a Baroque building, its Corinthian columns support balconies of wrought iron work, caryatids and grotesques.
