The Hogsback, a mountain village in the Eastern Cape, has a distinctly English feel to it due to a micro-climate that is characterised by mist and rain. The surrounding area is lush with indigenous forests.
Not the most of inspiring of titles, but the road provided a surprisingly fantastic photo opportunity.
The view looking north of an early morning. (my Grandad told me you could see 6 counties of a good morning...not too sure how true that is!) had a trip up to London this morning and had to stop 3 times to take pictures of the sunrise. This was the last one. Stunning morning : made you proud to be alive
The Hogsback area at Letchworth SP looks like a scene from some alien planet. The Genesee River winds around like you wouldn't believe. You'd have to go to a different location to really see the spine of the Hogsback, but this angle shows the circuitous route the river takes through there. I love that Juniper tree in the foreground. Talk about survivors!
The Mt. Morris dam controls how much water there is in the flatland seen in the middle of the picture. Sometimes this is all water.
I only recently discovered that there is a Hogsback pull-off at Letchworth. I had thought the only way I would ever see it was from across the way on the left, where you just see it from the side. (Thanks, Mary!)
I tried to find a place, free of trees, where I could shoot head on, in order to see both sides, but I couldn't find such a place.
The only person, besides some workmen at the dam overlook, I saw in the park was a young lady with a camera standing in the upper part of that triangle you can see in the foreground. By that time I was back up to my car.
To see the most spectacular sunsets, you need to take a drive up to the microwave towers. You can park your car, get out your champagne and chairs and relax. Or you can d a JD and climb to the beacon (this is where Shani and Jane are standing to get a view down the valeys in all 4 directions.

The drive to the Hogsback will take you through stretches of indigenous forest. The area is full of hiking trails, beautiful waterfalls and is also home to the samango monkey, an aboreal species whose range is restricted to Afromontane rainforest in the eastern parts of southern Africa.
Myself along with four other girls ventured up into the mountain to Hogsback (the inspiration behind Lord of the Rings). It was a long drive up windy mountain roads but well worth the wait. When we arrived in Hogsback it was almost as if we entered a completely different world. There were statues of fairies lining the street along with goblins and trolls. The hostile we stayed at had many suggested activities that we could do. There was hiking, pottery, etc. The most interesting one was a "Hot Bath with a View." I made the assumption of a hot tub/sauna with a window facing the mountains. Little did I know that a hot bath with a view was literally a bathtub hanging off the edge off a mountain. There was no way any of us could pass it up. So the five of us signed up and enjoyed our Hot Bath with a View!

On a short hike from the Hogsback Overlook to the lean-to at Letchworth State Park. Last time I was here the Genesee River had overflowed to cover the flood plane.

I returned to the barley field but then headed south down the hill and then turned east along the North Downs Way. For some reason I had never walked this part of the NDW. I followed it across Portsmouth Road, down Ferry Lane, across the river, Shalford Park and back home via the now finished poppy field. The field on the left has wheat in it.
