Walking towards the radio masts on the Hog's Back, I noticed the setting moon was similar in size to the “moons” on the mast.
I think this is an erica. The sunbirds loved putting their beaks right up into it and harvesting the nectar. Difficult to catch, they seemed to see me coming with my new lens. THis was at Hogsback. Still not well.
Despite Mom's fall, we soldiered forward on our first real vacation in two years.
The Hogsback is so named because the ridge jutting into the canyon resembles the high hunched back of a wild boar.
Letchworth State Park is a popular destination to see fall color, and it did not disappoint. In fact, we couldn't see the entire park as rangers closed part of it as full in the afternoon!
After a morning of food preparation, I took a late afternoon walk up The Mount to the Hog’s Back. There was a chilly wind on the Cathedral view side but the other (south) side was sheltered and offered a wonderful cloudscape with 180° views.
Never looks the same; always looks different. The water seems to be a bit dirty and there is a lot of ice.
For my non-Ottawa contacts, here's a wide angle view of the Hogs Back Falls, where I've taken many of my falls shots. I never tire of going there. The power, sounds, and views are always impressive, and all this, right in the heart of Ottawa.
Enjoy in the light box, its the weekend after all.
There are two primary overlooks for the Hogsback on the west side of the gorge. The trail follows the rim on around. This view from the south overlook is the reverse of the first photo below from the north overlook. (The Genesee River flows south to north, emptying into Lake Ontario at Rochester.)
Milady dropped me off at the dam overlook then drove down to Hogsback to read a book.

Hogsback at high water on a gray day.
Last Friday at Letchworth State Park. I parked at the Hogsback Overlook than hiked the lean-to loop for about 3.6 miles. I had rain driving down and on the way back but only a hint of a sprinkle while on the trail. Temperature was in the upper 30s F. The Genesee was at high water due to the rapidly melting snowpack from the previous week. There was considerable ice floating in the water.
This is the camera with the previously-stuck lens. I remounted the lens and corrected the problem that was causing the jam. The photographs are still not as sharp as expected but that may just be me getting used to the camera again. I am taking a series of test shots with the current roll.
