"Winter-Sleeping Wildlife" by Will Barker, who copyrighted in 1958. Illustrated by Carl Burger. Pulishers Harper & Brothers, New York.
1958 is a bit past my definition of "vintage" but I found Carl Burger's illustrations so charming that I wanted to share a few of them.
...the night yesterday was SO beautiful. After watching a movie at home I stood and looked out at the full moon for almost 10 minutes. The sky was almost blue and the illumination excellent. I could clearly see the countryside that normally was pitch black. It would have been an excellent photo night...yet I did nothing.
Why? First, Madison is not very inspiring. Second, it was excruciatingly - mind numbingly cold (I dunno - maybe -20 Cs) and I did not feel like freezing again - and besides it is better to sleep before teaching 60 undergrads mean variance frontiers.
...so I did what the owner of this car did...

while doing some fall cleanup in my garden this chubby little fellow was snug as a bug in a rug ! Totally satisfied to stay hibernating ?? Not sure if thats how they work ?? Anyway, early fall ( Oct ) and the snoring continues :)
Buddy's not the "snuggliest" of dogs. He has his moods when he wants a good cuddle with a human, but I've never seen him burrow into blankets or pillows...until yesterday.
He looks so comfy, I fell in love with all of these photos ( +2 in comments)
I have a simple attitude with the critters in my yard. You leave me alone and I'll leave you alone. So, I have a large Wasps nest in the Climates out back. If you don't provoke the Wasps, they just hang out and pollenate the vegetation.
With the big cold snap we had in Lubbock last Christmas these guys died off, or so I thought. I opened one of the South facing windows today and got a surprise. My guys were wedged in between the window and the jam. Cool stuff for something that has a brain the size of a pin head. They found a warm sheltered place to hold out for the winter.

We didn't leave the house today.
(Ollie did but Jessami and I hid in bed or on the sofa)
I actually took a much better version of this photo this morning but didn't have my memory card in. D'oh. I was in a hurry to take this. Hence the crappy. Again.
And those rear lights and silhouette... simply fantastic! I love the stance, low... and yet not too low. Ready for take-off.

...and they've survived for quite a few years already!!! :) Kids love to play with them in the summer... but during the winters, they're just hibernating.
Or you can just call it asleep. Normally I wouldn't photograph the guard but if he's asleep, to bad he didn't fall off his horse! :)
