Inspiration getting ready for deep hibernation… it’s cold, I’m feeling like getting under my warm blanket and sleep until spring birds will wake me up with their morning tweets. But now I’m going to enjoy my colourful magical dreams, letting my inspiration fly through the night.

When not a single flake of snow is left, the streams are like frozen highways through the forest. Frozen solid underfoot, a few degrees is all that separates me from walking home with wet feet. I did, in fact, just a few seconds later, after putting too much trust in a thin spot of ice. Healey's Brook is resistant, never giving easily to turning solid, pushing through the coldest days with still small pockets of open ripples. I can't help feeling taken by the side-to-side swaying, the rhythm of water slipped into slow motion. The colours really shake me, all the blues and whites and yellows, the latter from leaking tannins, making a tea of the forest floor. This will be a sleepy stream by midsummer, but it's strong enough now to wrap around me, and give a sense of just how much warmth the winter can kill. It's a murder worth making, a heartfelt hibernation, and a good way of earning spring.

This was taken this afternoon in the Cotswold village of Bibury. All the buildings that I saw were built of the local stone which has a lovely golden colour.

Common Lizard (Zootoca vivipara, formerly Lacerta vivipara). Woodwalton Fen National Nature Reserve, Cambridgeshire. Wednesday 2nd December 2015.

This morning's welcome sight of blue skies and sunshine required a decision; do I go out and photograph trains, or do I go out and photograph wildlife? A quick check of the Met. Office website, just to make sure that it wasn't just a flash in the pan, and I opted for wildlife; partly because clear blue skies don't always make for the most interesting railway photos, and partly because the mild temperatures offered at least a slim prospect of still finding a few interesting invertebrates about. Because of the stiff breeze, I chose Woodwalton Fen, as once inside the reserve it's usually fairly sheltered. Besides which, I just love Woodwalton Fen!

When I got there it was about 11 o'clock, and it was so ridiculously warm that it suddenly occurred to me that I might be lucky enough to find a few reptiles still about, taking advantage of the warm sunshine. Normally they would be expected to begin hibernating by about late October, but with the very mild weather throughout November I thought there was a good chance that they might have delayed hibernation. Checking out some likely places, I was really pleased to find three Common Lizards, basking together on what seems to be one of their favourite tree stumps. Even better, two of them still had their tails intact.

As ever, finding and photographing aren't always the same thing, but after about 20 minutes and two muddy knees later, I had the shots I wanted. In the end, I didn't find any interesting invertebrates, but finding the lizards, and seeing a Chinese Water Deer, more than compensated for that!

Little early this week. It's a nice change.

Snow's finally leaving, and yet, this is so pensive, still waiting for spring...

I'm really digging Yo La Tengo (See the last link on the page~), and the new Pokemon game. YES. I am a nerd. A huge nerd. Swoobat is my current favorite, although it changes every day, depending on what I'm doing... ( See? )

Yeah. I picked THAT one and just made that statement a whole lot nerdier. Also, I'm actually taking time to do quick sketches of each one...

Nerd.
