Snowscape at Great Baehr Swamp in Buffalo, NY

Latin Name: Polygonia c-album

Looking like a tatty Small Tortoiseshell, the Comma is now a familiar sight throughout most of England and Wales and is one of the few species that is bucking the trend by considerably expanding its range. The butterfly gets its name from the only white marking on its underside, which resembles a comma.

When resting with wings closed this butterfly has excellent camouflage, the jagged outline of the wings giving the appearance of a withered leaf, making the butterfly inconspicuous when resting on a tree trunk or when hibernating.

Photographed along the river bank.

Taken with my Canon Telephoto Zoom 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM EF Lens and apart from being framed in Photoshop, is SOOC.

Each winter in North Carolina, the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission leads efforts to check bat hibernation sites, providing them information on species diversity, general numbers of bats, and the impacts of white-nose syndrome, the fungal disease that has devastated cave-dwelling bat populations in eastern North America.

Fish and Wildlife Service biologist Sue Cameron recently joined Katherine Caldwell and Joey Weber of the wildlife resources commission, to revisit a Polk County cave that hadn’t been visited in years. The team found tri-colored and eastern small-footed bats. The Service has already considered placing the eastern small-footed bat on the endangered species list, due to impacts from white-nose syndrome, deciding that such protections weren’t warranted. The Service is currently considering the tri-colored bat for such protections.

This is the left side of our garage if you are facing the opening. This table is pretty big and really sturdy. Lot's of room underneath also. You can't see in this shot but continuing down into the garage I have potted plants hanging out on rolling chairs, old trunks, whatever has an empty space to place something.

I totally hate this time of the year and wish I could hibernate until the end of March. The holidays are kind of a pain in the butt, the weather is cold and dreary, I become totally unmotivated in many things (including photography), etc.

But this time around, I'm trying to make some changes. I'm thinking right now about the many pairs of cute boots that have been languishing in my closet that I can now wear. I bought a cranberry scarf, mittens and hat to brighten me up on drab winter days. And I'm going back to school. I think studying math and science, after so many years will at least keep my mind off of the winter blues.

So, I'm going to kick myself in the butt and go out and shoot something, anything this weekend. Or maybe I'll stay in and learn how to finally use my flash. Or I could just buy a plane ticket and fly to Florida for a few days :-)

..... you get to hibernate. You do nothing for six months. I could deal with that.

Before you hibernate, you're supposed to eat yourself stupid. I could deal with that too.

If you're a bear, you birth your children (who are the size of walnuts) while you're sleeping and wake to partially grown, but cuddly cubs. I could definitely deal with that.

If you're a mama bear, everyone knows you mean business. You swat anyone who bothers your cubs. If your cubs get out of line, you swat them too. I could deal with that.

If you're a bear, your mate expects you to wake up growling. He expects that you will have hairy legs and excess body fat.

Yup, I wanna be a bear.

The days are getting shorter, and colder and Chippy is still trying to fill his cache for a long winter. Any day now I will stop seeing him.

I read something kind of sad but interesting about Chipmunks. They spend so much of their day to day trying to stay safe from predators. So when it's hibernation time, it's really like a holiday for them. They can stay all cozy and safe in their wee house down underground. Hopefully Chippy has a cozy bed and lots of peanuts to help him through until Spring. I'll miss seeing him;)

~ soooo sleepy that she fell asleep gettin' out of her cozy bed! tee-hee!

Gonzalez, our Greek tortoise. Very thirsty after hibernation. He enjoys his bath and drinks a lot of water.

A barren tree sits among a rocky portion of the Lehigh Gap. A zinc smelter located a couple of miles up the river decimated much of the plant life here into the late 20th century, at which post the plant was closed. Today vegetation is growing back at a considerable rate, but there are still lots of dead trees and trunks in the area.

katanya sekarang giliran dia berhibernasi.

selamat aja deh... nanti pas musim semi tiba gw banguninnya deh...
