These photos were taken of the preparations for the Marche Blanche/March in White in April 2008 at the Palais Garnier: The Paris Opera House.
July 2008 saw the rescue of Ingrid Betancourt and 14 other political hostages by the Colombian Army from the FARC guerrilla forces. Naturally, this was wonderful news to those fighting for the release of all the hostages held in Colombia, but there remain close to 2000 people being held in that country.
I would like to believe that the actions of the ordinary citizens who fought to bring the hostages' plight to the eyes of the world; made a difference and encouraged those in positions of real power to take action. Of course, more needs to be done to bring a final and positive resolution to the crisis in Colombia.
I would like to strongly encourage all those who believe in humanitarian and human rights issues (whichever they may be) to take personal action. Of course each individual has varying amounts of time and effort to afford, yet each act counts and is vital. The day I am writing this is the 19th of January 2009 and is Martin Luther King Day in the U.S. In this world the political, financial and communitarian interests of many of those who hold real power to bring change are counter to the lives of the weakest and the oppressed in our societies - those who want to bring real change need to act together today for a better and more just world. Tomorrow shall always be too late....

On Monday fresher week starts. Mums, Dads and kids are filling all the supermarkets, taking all the parking spaces ... and tonight the kids will get drunk and vomit on the road.

A couple of parking lot attendants wait to be helpful. It's very interesting how seriously people take their jobs here in Japan. Even jobs like this. In the US, you might expect to find a couple of underpaid, slightly unshaven, sweatshirt-wearing guys attending a parking lot. They may or may not look you in the eye as you enter the lot and they may or may not act like they enjoy their life in any way. But here - even dull jobs like this are performed with panache. Their uniforms would never be anything less than crisply pressed and smartly worn, and their demeanor and behavior is professional, attentive, and utterly the best of what they have to give. I believe the movie "Last Samurai" said it best when Tom Cruise says, "From the moment they wake up, these people are utterly devoted to the perfection of whatever they pursue." It is true about their hobbies, their schoolwork, their families, and their jobs. Certainly the Japanese are not without their problems, but this isn't one of them. And it's what has made them such a powerful society.
