The black tear marks that begin from the corner of the eye and run down the sides of their face from their nose down to their mouths are a unique feature has big benefits for cheetahs. These markings play an important role for by reflecting the glare of the sun while hunting. They are especially helpful in open plains where the glare of the sun is extremely bright. In addition, by minimizing glare, Cheetah can remain focused on moving prey during what is usually a very high-speed chase.

The Ol Pejeta Conservancy is 90000 acres of open savannah grassland, and has the richest diversity of wildlife in kenya outside of the Maasai Mara. It is situated on the equator west of Nanyuki, between the foothills of the Aberdares and Mount Kenya. The Conservancy is host to the "Big five game" among a large selection of other African animals, which makes it a popular safari destination.

Yesterday, it was extremely cold ( below -15 °C) in the Bavarian Forest. Thus, the visibility of the Alps was spectacular. Here, we look southwards and in the middle of the image, we see the Dachsteingruppe, which is approximately 150 km apart from the peak of the Lusen. The Lusen is one of the highest and most interesting mountains of the Bavarian Forest.

A 350 mile journey begins with one step.

Saturday night William McIntosh and I made some plans to head up to Julia Pfeiffer State Beach to photograph Keyhole Arch during the winter solstice. During the winter solstice the sun lines up through the arch and has produced some magical captures and is a popular destination for many photographers. The following morning Bill called at 7:30am and said that the weather had turned up north and we decided to head the other direction towards the southwest, After spending a half hour looking at the radar and Skyfire we decided to head to a spot 6 hours away just past Phoenix Arizona to the Salt River Bend.

As we traveled, the weather started clearing more and more and by the time we got on location the clouds almost cleared out of the sky completely but luckily as the sun dipped to the horizon we did catch some last minute color in the sky.

This is an 8 image panorama stitched together in Lightroom and in an effort of full disclosure, was unhappy with the size of the moon when shooting at 11mm so I had the presence of mind to grab the longest lens in my bag at the time, a 24-105mm and snapped a second shot of the moon and replaced the tiny moon in the original composition with the one shot with the longer lens. I know some people object to this but I'm trying to sell prints here people. LOL :)

This is a least sandpiper. It takes the title of being the smallest shorebird in the world, being just a little larger than a sparrow. According to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, while probing damp mud with their bills, the least sandpipers use the surface tension of the water to transport prey quickly from their bill tips into their mouths. This was taken on Pond 5 of the Riparian Preserve at Water Ranch if you're taking notes at home. Helpfully labeled as Congressional District 5 by Flickr.

One of my attempts at the "Macro Mondays" theme "Star".

This week we would like to pay tribute to Hans (flic.kr/ps/2bpyNi) and his wonderful macro photography by posting one of his past themes.

Hans gave us many great themes over the years and it was hard for us to choose. We have decided on the theme Star . Chosen because he was a person who had a profound influence on others and was a source of inspiration. Indeed, he was a Star.

Shot with a Noritsu "45 mm F 4" (enlarging) lens on a Canon EOS R5.

This may look like a studio or composite shot but it isn't! This photo was taken out in the field from a pop up hide and spot metered on the kingfisher. The mid morning sun has helpfully provided a catchlight in the kingfisher's eye. I have dropped exposure of the shady dark green background in post processing to create a greater contrast for the kingfisher. This is part of a trio of 'portrait' style shots of the same bird in different poses.

Went up to Wrightwood last weekend to scout out some new vantage points and ended up well above the cloud cover.

This is one of your average shots and it didn't really look like much straight out of camera, but when I went into post and cranked up the contrast, the layering in the hills popped out and the color in the sky came through. Hope you like!!! :)

For the Macro Monday challenge "Security" (February 1st 2022)

A tiny corner of two face masks.

"Stay safe" the challenge says ... "the key thought here is prevention" and my first thought was Covid. Looking at the safety measures that are required or encouraged there are two that are most helpful in keeping us safe and preventing the spread of the virus - physical distancing and face masks. Since the pandemic began I've learned so much about face masks - I never knew there was so much to learn! What material? How many layers? How to wear them? How to wash them? ... replacing filters etc. I guess we have all become experts ;o)

Another wonderful day out exploring the back roads! We met some very lovely and helpful people and saw the waterfall we had intended to see. (this isn't it!) The waterfall, called Stanton Creek waterfall, was beautiful but hard to photograph as I could only look down on it and could not get a good perspective. There was a path that went straight down, but it was inches deep in mud and didn't look the least bit safe! I could see Anita eyeballing it wistfully though! This photo was taken upstream where there were a series of smaller cascades, this being the first of a series of about three small drops. We found another swinging bridge and walked a little while on the Appalachian Trail. (This trail is 2,200 miles long! ) So many new sights and experiences added up to a truly stand out day.

Everyday a smile and the life is better again :)

Hank came out to help dead head the rosebush but I had already finished.. He said he was sorry he was late but I assured him I was able to handle the job just fine and I appreciated the nice thought... Happy Teddy Bear Tuesday, Everybody!!

Was out yesterday doing some shooting, ( there was not rain ) and will tell you that the Summer doldrums has really set in here, with photography being very slow and the birds not cooperating very much, but di manage a few which you will see in the next few days.

Here I need an explanation of why this Cardinal has no tail, he appeared for a few seconds and was gone, but managed 3 shots and he was gone, a little help here would be helpful about the tail.

Have a great day everyone and as always thank you for visiting.

The joys of finding new things to explore & playing with everything.

Happy Caturday.

Today's special guest is a dear friend of mine and a great SL artist.

Her flickr is like a journey into a tender nocturnal world full of interesting characters who deeply capture you with their stories.

Ladies and gentlemen it's a big pleasure to introduce you to the amazing, the awesome Ms. Rose Oswin Oswald !

Cla: Hi Rose! It's a pleasure to have you here and thank you so much for accepting this interview!

Rose: You're too kind! Thank you for having me on your Not So Late Show. This is such a fun and interesting series.

C.: I'd like to know better about your SL. When and how did it begin?

R.: My SL journey had multiple beginnings, the first time was in 2008 when a friend I played MMO games with told me about Second Life, and how it was a virtual world with user-generated content. He thought I would like to try it because I loved making characters and decorating in games that we played. I'll admit the idea intrigued me but after trying it I found I didn't have the time or the money to invest in SL. It wasn't like the games that you could quest to get in game money, and of course as you know SL isn't really a game, it's a social platform where you can create worlds or visit places created by other people. I did come back 5 years later and decided to stay.

C.: What is SL for you, today? How did it change over the years?

R.: SL has always been a place where I can create. The thing I love the most about SL is that it's given me a creative outlet where I can build worlds, characters and tell stories through my photos. It's also therapeutic, if my mind is racing and I can't focus, I can log into SL and decorate and before I even realize it I'm feeling relaxed and calm. Years ago, I joined because I was looking for a place to meet people, I've never found it easy to meet them in real. I used to be very shy, and had very little self confidence. I met a lot of people, though just as they do in real, many of them moved on or left SL. For a few years I never spoke to anyone, then I joined flickr and met a lot of nice people and have become friends with some of them.

C.: If you could give some advices to someone who is new to this little magical world, what would you suggest?

R.: When you first log into SL it can be a bit daunting, you can find a lot of helpful information on their website and there are many videos you can watch but as you said this is a magical world, the magic really happens after you decide what your SL life will be. Some might say you're limited by your own imagination, but Second Life is filled with the imaginings of millions of people, you can find inspiration in places such as flickr.

C.: Let's talk about your SL photography. Your photos always tell a story and in those stories we can find many several characters. Do they represent different aspects of yourself? Would you like to let us know more about some of them characters and which are your favorites?

R.: Many of my characters represent myself though there are a few characters from shows or movies I might be watching. I love creating a new character and their stories, though it's not always obvious what that story is, because I often just do a photo with a title. I have written a few stories but I love when people comment on what they think the photo is about and who the characters are. I have two favorite characters, one is Rosie Mouse and the other is Rosey the Snail. I have so much fun being a snail, and the way the avatar moves, bobbing its head from side to side as I walk around makes me laugh so much. They represent the silly, never want to group up side of me and those that are of couples, human or a fantasy creature represent my real relationship.

C.: The night is another element that is often in your photos. What's your relation with the night?

R.: I've always loved the night and shadows. Nighttime is often a very quiet time as well, and I can think so much clearer in the darkness of the night. I like to take darker photos in Second Life because I use light projectors, with them you can see material layers better, and shadows create depth.

C.: If you had to illustrate a popular song in one picture, which one would you pick and why?

R.: I'm not really sure, I don't really listen to a lot of music these days, though music is a component of my photos and stories. I usually create the photo first and then find a song to fit the theme.

C.: Do you have a favorite photo among all the ones on your Flickr?

R.: I actually have 2 favorite photos, one is the photo I use for my flickr banner called *The Dance* www.flickr.com/photos/clararose/50265208668/ . That photo was one of those that just sort of happened, I didn't plan it out or have a story to go with it, and I couldn't believe it came out so well. The other one is another dance photo called *Somebody Make Me Feel Alive and Shatter Me* www.flickr.com/photos/clararose/51219165881/ . I took that photo at a time when I was deeply depressed and felt so numb. I remember listening to the song over and over and I logged into SL got dressed in this gorgeous ballet outfit, found what I felt was the perfect pose then took the photo. It was also one of those rare occasions when Depth of Field actually worked, and I didn't crash. Both photos feature songs from Lindsey Stirling, her music and videos have been a great source of inspiration for me.

C.: As usual, I like to end my interviews inviting my guests to ask themselves a question and give themselves an answers. Would you like to?

R.: Do you regret not trying a demo before you bought that outfit? YES! Always try a demo when you can!

Thank you kindly, dear Rose, for opening the doors of your SL world and your SL photography to us, letting us know more about yourself through your deep, interesting and so wise thoughts!

Stoats are always challenging to capture in a photo because they move around so quickly. It may look like he was helpfully posing - but he wasn't.

Barn Owl and catch - a few steps nearer would have been helpful, but still very happy to see this fantastic owl.

CN's White Pine Local works slowly east over the Presque Isle River trestle just east of Tula, MI on the beautiful morning of August 1, 2003. WC 2002 East has a short train boxcars for the copper refinery at White Pine. We're into the second year of CN ownership of the WC lines in the U.P., but so far pretty much everything looked and felt the same.

The White Pine Local would run east three days a week out of North Ironwood, MI and would be the perfect target on the way over from the Twin Ports on the deadhead to the Upper Peninsula to railfan the E&LS, LS&I, or WC/CN.

The Mellenheads that ran this line in late-WC and early-CN were some of the friendliest railroaders I even encountered. They were always helpful with intel and offered numerous cab rides. Not sure it was more the all-day 10 MPH or my preference for photos, but I never took them up on the latter.

During this time, the ex-Algoma Central GP38-2s were common on the former WC lines and they looked great with their relatively recent maroon paint applied.

All good things come to an end. The ex-AC 2000s were eventually banished to Canada and this ex-DSS&A line would see its last train east of Marengo Jct. in 2010. The ex-Soo line that it connected with hasn't fared much better. Good memories though of these photos and also of the friendly railroaders that ran these trains.

Often she would empty the drawer during the night...

CP 7026 hauls the 243 out of South Haven siding after meeting 240 which ironically also had a red SD70ACU leading. I saw this 243 first at Plymouth with a great looking leader and the sky clearing up gradually, I gave chase. Fortunately he had this meet at South Haven as gave me ample time to make the hike to this curve just west of the Clearwater River.

When visiting the Shuswap area many will also take in Margaret Falls. Each year I try to come up with a very different image and this one fits the bill. This bridge covered stream leads up to the Falls. It is a freezing cold, Glacier fed, torrent of water, and a delight to witness.

Sony A7iii (aperture priority AF). Overall, my experimenting with AF has produced mixed results. For quick shots AF is helpful. However, when you have time to compose your shot, manual focusing is infinitely better. Anyway. I had a short talk with this lady. She was eager to leave the footpath and walk on the road in order to get to the bus stop. She finds walking very difficult, in particular managing the kerbs that frequently interrupt the footpath. Why do cars get the privilege of running on a smooth and uninterrupted surface whilst pedestrians have to climb up and down the kerbs? And off she went, on the tarmac braving the cars.

Passengers aboard LNER's 5.30pm Thursdays-only service from London Kings Cross - Edinburgh Waverley (1S27), in the hands of Azuma unit 801203, get the opportunity to spend an evening south of the border instead seeing as the train has been terminated at Newcastle.

Helpfully it's still well before closing time and, with plentiful vibrant bars and clubs within a short walk of the station, a 'night on the toon' might not be such a bad alternative.
