A year ago exactly I realized that catterpillars chose a tree in my garden to become butterflies. For months, I followed their progress and even helped wth a few 'births'. I hope you enjoy these as much as I did.

I think of myself as a ‘hunter of images’. I love to find beautiful scenes just as they are, without adding filters, retouching, manipulation and using only available light. I think of my camera and my lenses like a painter thinks of a brush and paint: they’re the tools I use to show the world as I see it.

I’m never happier than when I have my camera with me and I’m shooting. Then I forget my back’s broken (yes, I can walk), that some things worry me. When I’m taking photographs, life is perfect, joyful, I’m in awe of the things I find, and I’m always moved by life and beauty on this planet. I tend to use my macro lens a lot —it’s my favourite—, but well, on a trip I jump from the macro to the zoom. My cameras have always been Nikon, and these were taken with a D7000.

We met-up with Jeff, Zann, and Toby at a dog park in Davis while we were en route to the Bay Area for Thanksgiving. Toby was doing to Pip all the things Pip normally does to Layla -- grabbing ears, biting tails, licking muzzles ... at times Pip wasn't quite sure what to make of it.

Associate producer Matt Harris and our sound guy Greg Pilsworth are the coolest guys in the place.

i took this photo on the corner of Jefferson and Central Ave. The man was standing on a rather empty street with few cars running through it. I approached him after taking the photo, and he said he was fine with it. He did not really want to talk, so I didnt bother him further.

For edits, I cropped in tightly to make sure he was the main subject. I made it black and white, and increased the clarity to emphasize his face.

How can you document something happening around you in a visually appealing way?

In this case, when the subject is close to you, their facial expression make the photo more visually appealing,

How can you express opinions on an issue through documentary photography?

The message that we are trying to get across is the most important in documentary photography. This photo would be very different he was not holding the sign. If the issue is about the homeless, then the background is very important if talking about their situation.

Houston #UnsilentNight 2014

New York composer, Phil Kline, created this 43 minute piece, written specifically to be heard outdoors in the month of December. It takes the form of a street promenade in which the audience becomes the performer. Each participant gets one of four tracks of music that can easily be downloaded on your smart phone, prior to your arrival. When participants play their different “parts” simultaneously, it helps create the special sound of the piece.

The person I asked to take this photo was very very confused by my shenannigans.

The OASIS project is part of BCIT’s Smart Microgrid system and collects solar energy through photovoltaic (solar) panels, converts it into electrical energy, and then stores it in lithium ion battery banks. An intelligent energy-management system plans the distribution of stored energy to power various campus loads, including electric vehicle charging stations at BCIT’s Burnaby Campus.

“This project is a demonstration of how clean technology can help reduce emissions, protect the environment and generate employment opportunities,” said Carr. “I congratulate the BC Institute of Technology for being early adopters of electric vehicles and their supporting infrastructure. Projects like this are a beacon of innovation in the Canadian clean energy industry, which our government will continue to support.”

The OASIS system components include:

a 500-kWh Li-ion Battery Energy Storage System;

a 250-kW solar photovoltaic (PV) system;

two DC Fast Charge stations for electric vehicles (EV); and

a highly sophisticated energy-management system (EMS).

The EMS performs energy balancing between solar PV system generation, EV charging loads, battery energy storage system and local power distribution grid.
