The snow is deep in places which is extra hard on these hunters and on me when I try to get in closer. I know, another owl pic, that's mainly all the wildlife I'm finding around here. I don't have time to check daily, but I try to drive around at least once a week. This one was about 10 miles from my place. Still haven't spotted the one on my property. A bald eagle flew over the house so I suspect that is who took the owl out.

A 4-pack of mid-train helpers lead by MRL 4319 assist a freight train around the iconic horseshoe trestle at Skyline Trestle on Mullan Pass.

Hippo feeding on grass in the Chobe river. The oxpecker birds are doing him a great favour as they feed on the ticks and the parasites and they can also be a useful alarm for any potential threats.

McKee Botanical Gardens is hosting a dinosaur exhibit again! This frightful creature was in the parking lot, scaring adults and children alike!
It seemed like sliding with a surreal filter was most appropriate :-)

Five Montana Rail Link EMD six-axle locomotives, used as a helper set on Bozeman Pass, head downgrade back to Livingston glinting the setting sun on October 10, 2005. Westbound trains get plenty of help by this set, with MRL No. 390 leading a SD45-2 and a trio of SD45s for a total of 100 cylinders producing 10,800 horsepower.
A 50-unit AC4400CW order delivered in 1999 from General Electric doomed the two helper districts on KCS with the implementation of distributed power once again on the KCS mainline.
The railroad used radio-controlled locomotives (RCL) beginning in the 1970s on their trains, but reverted back to manned helpers based out of Neosho, Missouri, and Heavener, Oklahoma, to get heavy trains over the grade.
Here a southbound loaded grain train with 2x1 DP power glides along Butler Creek in the shadow of Butler's Bluff just south of Noel, Missouri. The train has conquered one of the three 1.5 percent grades in the Ozarks with the final two coming in quick succession in just a few miles.

Anyone else finding their butterfly bush leaves all chewed up like this... and I never see any insects!! Do they come out at night to party??!!

This primeval scene is beside the Natchez Trace Parkway at mile 122, east of Canton, Mississippi. The National Park Service has provided a nice boardwalk to help the visitor experience this silent and gloomy place. In the lower right a few cypress knees can be seen protruding upward out of the water.
A cypress knee is a distinctive structure forming above the roots of a cypress tree of any of various species of the subfamily Taxodioideae. Their function is unknown, but they are generally seen on trees growing in swamps. Some current hypotheses state that they might help to aerate the tree's roots, create a barrier to catch sediment and reduce erosion, assist in anchoring the tree in the soft and muddy soil, or any combination thereof. Many years ago, the Pearl River flowed here but then changed course. A shallow area was created by the deposition of sediments as the river retreated. During periodic low water, seedlings of water-tolerant cypress and tupelo trees gained a foothold. The trees you see today are a result. Water tupelo and bald cypress trees can live in deep water for long periods. After taking root in the summer when the swamp is nearly dry, the seedlings can stay alive in water deep enough to kill other plants. (Source: www.nps.gov/places/cypress-swamp.htm)

Seems like Santa is backed up with packages JUST like the post office near us. Our post office has a tent the size of a circus tent out back that is full of undelivered packages and letters! OH MY! A lack of delivery people is a primary issue. The tiny bears here decided to take matters into their own hands where Santa was concerned.
"If Santa needs help," said Jillian, "then we are the tiny bears to call!"

One of the young green heron triplets is now out of the nest and doing a bit of exploring. He seems to be unsure about what to do with those floppy things on each side of his body, and it looks like he's calling for help. Wildwood Park, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.
A helper set tacks onto the rear of C784 at East Grafton. Manned helpers are becoming more and more rare in this era of distributed power, but on grades as severe as those on the Mountain Sub the extra push from these helpers is irreplaceable.
A set of three Burlington Northern SD60Ms head downgrade back to Crawford, Nebraska, to push another coal load over Crawford Hill on July 21, 2003. A fuel tender is spliced into the power to lengthen the time between refueling for the busy helper set. Note the special device above the anti-climber on No. 9215 that lifts the pin allowing uncoupling of the helper on the fly at the summit at Belmont.
I discovered this fine circa-1962 Massey 35X in a rapidly decaying barn (really an old 19th Century cottage) outside of town. Check out the hand-hewn rafters that are giving way after more than a dozen decades... That tractor doesn't have a dent in it, and the key was in the ignition switch. Do you think someone would mind if I drove it home, to spare it the fate that awaits it in the next big storm?
