Possibly my favourite building in the country, Australia's Gallery of Modern Art. Although I do have a spot for the state gallery in Sydney, the Art Gallery of New South Wales mainly for it's painting collection which I can spend all day admiring and have seen over 20 times I think. I used to work as an art conservator after I finished art school and the construction of GOMA was an exciting addition for everyone in the arts industry.

So many are asking me about Photomatix HDR. So here are the HDR facts and some guidance.
HDR stands for high dynamic range. You can get more information from www.hdrsoft.com. There's also a flickr group HDR ( flickr.com/groups/hdr/ ) that is focused with this new technique. Photoshop CS2 has HDR rendering too but my preference is to use Phtotomatix.
Now, this is not a replacement for graphic software like Photoshop. HDR is using multiexposure pictures and blending them into one great picture. But still, it all depends on the person who is using Photomatix. Like you either want more sugar or less for your coffee I guess.
HDR can be very good and very addictive. And take care ...

My time in Japan was only a week and whilst there I had a rail pass which allows you unlimited travel on their trains, including their famous bullet train system. If you go there I highly recommend getting one :-) I traveled down to Kyoto and stayed in the Gion District known for it's Geisha, traditional architecture and food and a slower paced Japanese lifestyle compared to Tokyo.
Pictured here is Kiyomizu-dera Temple, world heritage listed, which I visited at sunset. After exploring along with everyone else who I found to be amazingly polite like the rest of the country I setup to capture the scene. I waited till the sun was completely gone and the moon lit the clouds from behind to capture this temple from a vantage point above the tree line. Far off in the distance you can See Kyoto in the valley which runs along a river and has lots of little canals that go through the city. Many of the streets are cobbled and exploring them is like stepping into the past, a truly exciting experience and cant wait to return again.

I shot this image in what was essentially a dark space but because I used long exposure times the purple light from the bridge illuminated everything around me :-)
The Gateway can be seen from everywhere within a 20km radius and it towers over everything in the area... To put things into perspective, the Bridge stretches 1.63 km across and it's so tall those huge cruise ships pass under it regularly.

The sunrise is fading as night drops over Surfer's Paradise Australia. This view shot from 20 stories up is titled "Two sides of Paradise", and was shot on my Nikon D800. There are many water inlets like the one seen on the left of this image and the houses have personal river access and can moore their yachts right out the front of their property. Also pictured is the Gold Coast Freeway flowing in and out of the Surfers Paradise CBD.

One of those sunrises you are so happy you got out of bed for. The sky lit up for 30 minutes or so and I got my camera gear in and amongst the Bondi Iceberg baths. These are ocean tidal pools right on the water and the sea waves crash over into them. Its the perfect place to swim and have a good time in the summer.

Visit to Concrete City with fellow photographers: Curtis Solanick, Brian Bukeavich, Lewis De Joseph, Marty Straub and Dave Cohen.
Since purchasing MacPhun's new HDR software, AuroraHDR Pro over the holidays, I made sure to capture plenty of bracketed exposures to jump head-first into the program (I've used HDRsoft's Photomatix Pro dating back to late 2006)

big From July 14th 2007, at Blackwater, NWR in Maryland.
1 shot hdr from raw (-2, 0, +2). I finally broke down and bought the full version of Photomatrix. All the hdrs I've done to date have been with the trial version...
The south shore of Lake Ray Roberts continues to retreat as the drought in North Texas continues.
This is a HDR (high dynamic range) image composed of three different photos taken in quick succession and blended together with Photomatix software.
The blending allows the nuances of color and light to be better captured than with a single image frame. This shot was handheld and thus you may see some slight blurring...
I personally think this is better viewed at the larger sizes.
If you're interested in trying this technique, you can download a free trial of Photomatix at www.hdrsoft.com
Dranesville Tavern was built in 1823. In 1865, the Alexandria Gazette described Dranesville Tavern as "one of the finest roadside inns in the State of Virginia." That tradition of excellence and hospitality continues today at this beautifully restored National Historic Landmark.
A winter wonderland image in early fall in Mammoth Lakes, California.
Beyond the bridge in the background is a waterfall, barely visible here because of the fog and falling snow.
This image is from a hand-held 5-exposure series run through Photomatix Pro version 4.0. HDRSoft has changed the program user interface quite a bit from version 3.2 and I have not yet figured it all out. You can see a ghosting or halo artifact around the trees in the upper left corner. The alignment feature of version 4.0 works extremely well as I was off a bit in one shot.
The Story
In the heart of Ambleside lies this wonderful stream which today was very high and full of water after the recent heavy rain. This photo was taken a little up stream of the previous one and shows the old, now redundant water wheel.
Ambleside is one of my favourite villages, always full of walkers and visitors, with a great selection of Real Ale at the Royal Oak and a great Chinese restaurant. Well worth a visit if you havent been already.
The Shot
3 exposure shot (-1,0,+1) from using my D200 and a Nikon 10.5mm wideangle lens mounted on a tripod.
Opened in Photomatix with detail enhancer set to default.
Then modified using Topaz Adjust , to increase colour and sharpness.
Saturation then boosted and contrast adjusted using curves.
The noise reduced with Noiseware .
Sensor dust spots and blemishes removed and frame added.

This one is from Cockle Bay in Sydney Harbour. It was really still on the waters surface before the storm rolled in and I made this shot with my Nikon D800 on a tripod right on the waters edge. There is a neighborhood not far from where I live where all the yard's flowers have peaked and is absolutely spectacular at this time.
I went to pick up some 120 film after work yesterday. It looked like another crappy Friday afternoon but noticed the sun came out, casting a bright golden glow on the glassy high rises. It turned out to be a nice evening after all.
Just below this ledge is a playground and private homes. People were outside playing in their yards and enjoying the early evening.
Although there were dark clouds, the scene didn't look quite like this. I did a bit of post-processing work on the image.
(Image created using Canon PowerShot G10-RAW mode, Photomatix Pro, Capture One 4.7 Pro, Adobe Photoshop CS4).

This was actually the first shot I took of the opera house from our trip. I walked around circle quay, found a good spot, and setup my tripod. It was a beautiful night and there was a great sunset over the city. The soft glows of the golden orange clouds in the distance reflected on the white tiles of the opera house creating this soothing soft feeling to the building. The Opera House just kinda mesmerizes you and for a week straight I couldn't take my eyes off of it.
How this shot was made:
Canon 5D mkII, 70-200mm f4L IS lens
70mm F16, ISO50, at 25sec (Base Exposure)
5 Bracketed exposures (-2,-1,0,+1,+2) taken on location. Exported 5 exposures to HDRsoft's 32bit tiff plugin to combine into 32bit floating point tiff. Lightroom adjustments on the 32bit tiff to get it as close to final as I could. Brought into Photoshop to fix some dust particles that I couldn't fix in Lightroom. Also did some selective sharpening of the Opera House, using the "Highpass" filter set to "Overlay" blending mode just to give it a little more pop. Back into Lightroom to bump up the contrast and a little bit more exposure to finish it off.

This is Elk Falls in Avery County, NC. This waterfall has a great swimming hole and is a favorite of the "locals". I didn't witness it, but I've seen photos of people jumping from the right side of the falls into the pool. I (or the National Forest Service) don't recommend this, but I bet it would be a huge rush. If you look closely, you'll see there is a man to the left of the falls, he was fishing right there. He must've swam over with his rod and reel and then somehow climbed up the rocks to this spot, I did not see him catch anything!

Surfer's Paradise is a welcoming city catering for everyone from families to all walks of travelling tourists. Captured here you can see an energetic crowd of people on Friday night enjoying Italian food right in the thick of the CBD. I especially loved this modern metallic sculpture and the way the palm trees were lit up from the blue ringed lights wrapped around their trunks. Towering above everything are a couple of the many High rise Hotels all lined up along the broad beach, the main beach on the Gold Coast.

Replaced the green machine with a new blue baby.
This is the new Honda CBR600RR. Haven't had a chance to stretch her legs yet.
Since this is the cleanest she'll ever be, I thought I should take some pictures...

I worked this image up today to go along with an article I wrote recently.
The article was posted Friday, 1/21/11 and can be found on YourPhotoTips.com, HERE. It's called Express Yourself... Completely!
Taken inside an old barn and shed on a local farm, this is turning out to be one of my favorite locations due to its 'target rich' environment. The owner graciously allowed me to wander around freely, so I was able to grab some great detail shots this time. Being respectful, I resisted the urge to see if there was any cold beer in the fridge.
Nikon D7000, Nikkor 17-55mm f/2.8 lens, 17mm at f/5.6, seven exposures +/-1EV using Promote Control. Photomatix Pro, HDR Express, 32 Float, Nik Color Efex Pro, and Photoshop all had a hand in this one... but that was exactly the point of the article!
Apparently you arent allowed tripods in the QVB building in Sydney but I managed to capture this bracket before the security guards informed me of this fact. Its a safety hazard issue, which I totally understand because down on the lower levels a large volume of people stream through the thoroughfares most of the day. On this shot I gave all the people sitting and stationary lots of detail and used blurry captures of the people moving to show how this building functions both as a place to stand and admire and cater to the high end spenders.
