Special thanks to Antoine and Erika, my friendly neighbors who gave me this special chance to take this elegant car's pictures.

So many are asking me about Photomatix HDR. So here's the HDR fact and some guidance.

HDR stands for high dynamic range. You can get more information from www.hdrsoft.com. There's also a flickr group HDR ( flickr.com/groups/hdr/ ) that is focused with this new technique. Photoshop CS2 had HDR rendering too but my preference is to use Phtotomatix.

Now, this is not a replacement for graphic software like Photoshop. HDR is using multiexposure pictures and blending them into one great picture. But still, it all depends on the person who is using Photomatix. Like you either want more sugar or less for your coffee I guess.

HDR can be very good and very addictive. And take care ...

Taken from the side of the Marina looking towards the sea at around 9pm. The moon can be seen on the upper right.

The Shot

3 exposure shot (-0.7,0,+0.7) using my D200 and a Nikon 24-70mm F2.8 lens on a Manfroto tripod

Opened in Photomatix and processed with detail enhancer.

Then modified using Topaz Adjust , to increase colour and sharpness.

Saturation then boosted and areas of noise reduced.

The sky was darkened and the noise reduced with Noiseware .

Sensor dust spots and blemishes removed and frame added.

I spent last weekend in Vegas, I didn't come back with any money, but at least I got some photos.

I processed this with the HDRsoft 32-bit Lightroom Plug-in, then used Lightroom and Photoshop.

view is a mere 45-60 minutes out my front door. It is just a glimpse of Australia's Great Diving Range, which is the third longest sets of mountains in the world. They stretch on for 3500km and include many amazing natural formations.

I'm really happy with how the treatment of this harsh lighting turned out as it is an uphill battle producing a HDR from this time of the day, but this one ended up vibrant and glowing.

You've gotta see it LARGE on black!

Captured with a Canon EOS 30D and a Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM lens.

Location: Tanner Bridge Road, Jefferson City, Missouri

This was a planned HDR scene I captured about a year ago. I've been spending a lot of time with Photoshop CS4 and ACR 5 lately and thought about re-working this piece and I'm glad I did. I have a tutorial about how I created the original HDR image here; however, after using my new process, I need to update the steps.

In short, I used to simply load my Canon 30D RAW files directly into Photomatix, tone map, then save as 16bit tiff. Then load the 16bit tiff into Photoshop to do further enhancing such as noise removal.

Now I process each RAW in ACR 5, apply Noiseware Pro NR and save each frame as a 16bit tiff, then I open each tiff with Photomatix, merge, tone map, save again as 16bit tiff, open in Photoshop, apply default Noiseware Pro NR, USM (radius 1.1, amt: 40%), then save as 8bit jpg, which is what you see above. This rendition is far better than my first version (much cleaner, sharper, and the tonal depth is better too).

GSTA's 56th Annual Rod and Custom Spectacular 2012

My first attempt at HDR... any good ???

I have downloaded the trail version of Photomatix....to try it out for awhile to see if I like it or not...sorry for the watermarks on the photos but this is just a test using HDR....I did take many bracketed photos over the weekend as the clouds and lights seemed to be the perfect chance to test this out....

This is a three exposure HDR image.

Do you like this version ??? I may invest in the program a little bit down the road..

his was that moment in between golden hour and blue hour where the sky is just losing its warm glow and night is settling in. Sydney has so many exciting locations to explore and I loved this view of King St. Wharf over the water like this. Sydney is a glow at this time of the evening and the Pyrmont Bridge was busy with pedestrians heading home from work.

Way over the top with this one, felt I needed an hdr saturation overload - and I just loved the sky, red bricks and cobbled stone road in this one.

3 RAW bracketted images processed in Adobe's Camera Raw 4.2 and HDRSoft's Photomatix. The image is a little soft in the foreground this is because the camera was set to manual focus - and I didn't notice - doh!

...must get my eyes tested

This is one of the Alpine huts built to provide shelter for hikers on the overland trail from lake St. Claire to Cradle Mountain. It's elevation is about 1250m and the winds are icy cold up here in Winter. As soon as the sun drops behind the mountains the temperature plummets. This was shot at about 4 in the afternoon and waiting for sunset at 5:10 would have been dangerous without better suited gear as the hike back down to Lake Dove is at least 90 minutes even on the steeper track, which I took. Great experience to be up here, but could have gotten better weather ! Next time :-P

Seria lo que yo denominaria HDRSoft, he tratado de aumentar el rango dinamico pero tratando conservar al maximo la esencia de la foto, para no hacerla demasiado artificial.

Back in Brisbane and shot this balmy evening panorama of the Storey Bridge...

HDR Bracket shot with Nikon D800. Im pretty happy with the colours I got. It took me a long time to edit this image because each building required my individual attention for each layer of the HDR editing process. I wanted even the fine details to be correct exposure, e.g single balconies on buildings which you can zoom right in on with the Nikon D800, so the image ended up being a 2-3 hour edit.

Exposures used from bracket -2, -1, 0, +1 and +2 at 1EV

Been seeing HDR all around the place on Flickr and was tempted to try it :) my first HDR... used one shot (adjusted exposure and created 2 shots using CS3 based on the original photograph in the comment) Photomatix did the rest...) pretty cool to play around with I should say :)

Set of shots taken with 3 exposures each, merged to a single High Dynamic Range shot, aka HDR.

used PhotoMatix software. Much better than Photoshop CS3's built-in HDR feature.

I have wanted to start sharing photography tips for a while but it took me a while to feel like I have anything to share. At school I have had more time to research photography and I have learned a thing or two :P Today I will bring you the basics of how to take a well-balanced image (exposure wise). To begin, our cameras are unable to capture a scene with the same range that our eye can. The two most popular ways to get past this are a) taking multiple exposures and then either blending them in photoshop or with HDR software such as Photomatix, or b) using filters such as a grad ND (half clear, half dark filter) over the sky to even out the exposure. Just a quick note on Photomatix, you can try the program for free, it just stamps your images once you are done so I encourage you to do so. There are pros and cons to both multiple exposure and filters but I am sold on the filter route (even though I don’t have any grad ND’s :P ) and here is why. With filters it is much easier to achieve results in camera, this means that a) it is easier to be realistic (unless you are really talented with HDR software) and b) you get to spend more time in the field and less on the computer editing. Even if you don’t want to read all the words, just check out the difference in the comparison pictures from Darwin Wiggett (probably Canada’s top landscape photographer) it’s mind-blowing! I know that there are many people out there who think that HDR is “cheating” but I say, as long as the image looks good who cares how you got it? We should be looking at the image and not the process behind it.

As always, if you have any questions feel free to ask!

"For I know the plans I have for you," says the Lord. "They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope."

-Jeremiah 29:11

Sydney's Northern Beaches has some of the most picturesque ocean pools in Australia, if not the world as well. Narrabeen's pool is one of my favourites because it has this wooden walking platform that is suspended above the waters surface. Its an experience in itself to walk around on this thing, not mention jumping into the water from it ;-)

This is the QVB in Sydney, Australia. I shot this from the middle level to get the cool perspective and also used a wide angle lens to capture as much of the building as I could :-) I had set my camera, Nikon D800, up on my tripod to get this photograph but the security guards came over and politely asked me to pack it all up, as apparently tripods are a security risk. I attempted to argue that I would be quick and just take a couple of shots but these guys were the stubborn types! I guess they get this all day though so, so I packed up my gear and had to attempt taking my bracketed images handheld. I ended up stopping it down, increasing the ISO and only taking a 3 bracket exposure instead of my normal 5 or 7. I have also done a different edit to my normal HDR workflow and did a Digital blend.

This is a 180 degree HDR panorama from Tower Bridge in London

Check out the full size version to zoom in and take a look around: www.flickr.com/photos/fijian_scion/6521874685/sizes/o/in/...

Source:

Shot with a Canon EOS 550D, f2.8 17mm

Seven landscape captures across the panorama

Three exposures per capture, -2ev, 0, +2ev

Store all 21 images in RAW format

Preparation in Canon Digital Photo Pro 3.8:

Apply chromatic aberration correction

Apply noise reduction

Standardise white balance

Export all 21 images as 16-bit TIFFs

Exposure Stacking:

Open and merge each triple exposure set in Photomatix Pro 4.1

Apply selective de-ghosting as necessary (the people and boats were moving)

Save the intermediate 32-bit High Dynamic Range images as .EXR

Stitching:

Open the seven 32-bit .EXR images in Hugin (freeware) and enter lens and image information

Auto-generation, manual check, tweaking and optimisation of control points

Apply Photometric Optimisation for exposure blending

Set Cylindrical projection, field of view, and cropping

Stitch panorama to a 32-bit .EXR file

Tone Mapping:

Open the 32-bit .EXR in Photomatix Pro 4.1

Apply tone mapping (details enhancer) with high smoothing, contrast and luminosity, and low white point (to preserve highlights)

Save output as 8-bit TIFF (I only have 8-bit image processing software unfortunately)

Post-processing:

Open the tone-mapped image in GIMP 2.6 (freeware)

Create masks for sunlit sky, darkening sky, silhouetted buildings, sunlit buildings, and water

Use graded masks to correct exposure banding around the tower on Northern sky

Tone curve adjustments on sky (increase contrast, drop brightness to preserve highlights, lighten, increase gamma)

Graded tone-curve adjustments on buildings and water (raise contrast, brightness, lightness and gamma)

Partial blending in of people from the appropriate mid-exposure (they don't look right in HDR)

Tweak colour balance and saturation of all elements

Soften and blend mask edges

Downscale (to respect Flickr upload limit)

Export as 8-bit jpg

The Sydney Harbour Bridge was opened on March 19th, 1932 and I thought it fitting to release an image of the Bridge today. Across the water you can see the Bright lights of Luna Park as the sun sets in the west. The long exposure effect on the water has reflected the city and bridge lights really nicely also.
