This is the QVB in Sydney, Australia. I shot this from the middle level to get the cool perspective and also used a wide angle lens to capture as much of the building as I could :-) I had set my camera, Nikon D800, up on my tripod to get this photograph but the security guards came over and politely asked me to pack it all up, as apparently tripods are a security risk. I attempted to argue that I would be quick and just take a couple of shots but these guys were the stubborn types! I guess they get this all day though so, so I packed up my gear and had to attempt taking my bracketed images handheld. I ended up stopping it down, increasing the ISO and only taking a 3 bracket exposure instead of my normal 5 or 7. I have also done a different edit to my normal HDR workflow and did a Digital blend.

It is difficult for me to obtain very good HDR from my Canon S90, but sometimes...it happens.

I rested my camera on a window ledge. Believe it or not, the sky was of that color...amazing.

This is a 180 degree HDR panorama from Tower Bridge in London

Check out the full size version to zoom in and take a look around: www.flickr.com/photos/fijian_scion/6521874685/sizes/o/in/...

www.nmkphotography.com

Source:

Shot with a Canon EOS 550D, f2.8 17mm

Seven landscape captures across the panorama

Three exposures per capture, -2ev, 0, +2ev

Store all 21 images in RAW format

Preparation in Canon Digital Photo Pro 3.8:

Apply chromatic aberration correction

Apply noise reduction

Standardise white balance

Export all 21 images as 16-bit TIFFs

Exposure Stacking:

Open and merge each triple exposure set in Photomatix Pro 4.1

Apply selective de-ghosting as necessary (the people and boats were moving)

Save the intermediate 32-bit High Dynamic Range images as .EXR

Stitching:

Open the seven 32-bit .EXR images in Hugin (freeware) and enter lens and image information

Auto-generation, manual check, tweaking and optimisation of control points

Apply Photometric Optimisation for exposure blending

Set Cylindrical projection, field of view, and cropping

Stitch panorama to a 32-bit .EXR file

Tone Mapping:

Open the 32-bit .EXR in Photomatix Pro 4.1

Apply tone mapping (details enhancer) with high smoothing, contrast and luminosity, and low white point (to preserve highlights)

Save output as 8-bit TIFF (I only have 8-bit image processing software unfortunately)

Post-processing:

Open the tone-mapped image in GIMP 2.6 (freeware)

Create masks for sunlit sky, darkening sky, silhouetted buildings, sunlit buildings, and water

Use graded masks to correct exposure banding around the tower on Northern sky

Tone curve adjustments on sky (increase contrast, drop brightness to preserve highlights, lighten, increase gamma)

Graded tone-curve adjustments on buildings and water (raise contrast, brightness, lightness and gamma)

Partial blending in of people from the appropriate mid-exposure (they don't look right in HDR)

Tweak colour balance and saturation of all elements

Soften and blend mask edges

Downscale (to respect Flickr upload limit)

Export as 8-bit jpg

The Sydney Harbour Bridge was opened on March 19th, 1932 and I thought it fitting to release an image of the Bridge today. Across the water you can see the Bright lights of Luna Park as the sun sets in the west. The long exposure effect on the water has reflected the city and bridge lights really nicely also.

This is an HDR composite of three images (taken at -2, 0, and +2 ev), The dragon had just been turned on, and I liked the combination of the glowing dragon and glowing Cinesphere (that giant golf ball in the background).

I used the default settings in Photomatix for detail-enhancing.

If you like Chinese lanterns, take a look at the Chinese Lantern Festival pool, for even better photos. I’m not that good, but some of the other people who’ve posted are excellent photographers.

See where this picture was taken. [?]

Jenn and I had a wonderful picnic in this spot. There were big patches of grass, benches to enjoy the view, and tons of locals just hanging out enjoying the summer weather. There was even a workout class going on that just looked brutal. The Aussies are in shape that is fore sure!

How this shot was made:

Canon 5D mkII, 16-35mm f2.8L II

16mm F8, ISO640, at 6sec (Base Exposure)

5 Bracketed exposures (-2,-1,0,+1,+2) taken on location. Exported 5 exposures to HDRsoft's 32bit tiff plugin to combine into 32bit floating point tiff. Lightroom adjustments on the 32bit tiff to get it as close to final as I could.

Digital Blending:

Brought into Photoshop for some Digital Blending to fix several issues. First the sky and water were too dark and needed some work. Second the ferry dock and bridge piller on the upper right were too bright and blown out. Third the city and opera house could use a little more contrast and some of the clarity had been lost! Also, overall the photo was still a little soft and needed a punch on sharpening and contrast.

Used -2 exposure to fix the blown out areas of the ferry station and bridge piller. Used a curves adjustment with a layer mask to add contrast to the city, opera house, and little bit in the right of the photo. Added a l"highpass" filter layer set to "overlay" to add a little more pop of sharpening and contrast to the photo, but painted out the sharpening of the sky, and water using a layer mask. Used another curves layer to brighten up the water a bit more.

Back into lightroom for final adjustments. Increased exposure by .5 and adjusted white balance adding a touch more blue to the photo to finish it off.

My 2003 Toyota Celica GT-S. Shot with a Nikon D50, equipped with an 18-200mm VR lens and circular polarizing filter.

The effect on this image was accomplished usign Photoshop CS3 by running the tone mapping process multiple times, each at mild settings. I use the tone mapping plugin from hdrsoft.com. Here is my technique:

1. Start with an image (RAW if possible) that has a fairly dynamic range of colors already and make sure the brightness, contrast, shadows, saturation, and exposure are acceptable. The better the photo looks BEFORE tone mapping, the better it wil look after!

2. Convert to 32-bits and run the Photomatix Tone Mapping plug-in. Use relatively mild settings just to get a soft effect. You will do multiple passes, so don't try to get an extreme effect on the first pass.

Play around with the settings until you get a nice subtle effect.

3. Copy the image and paste it into a new 8-bit document. (You have to select 8-bit on the new document screen). if you just convert the 32-bit image to 8-bits, you'll get weird dots and lines in your image. There may be a better way to do this, but this method works perfectly every time.

4. Convert this new document back to 32-bits and run the Tone Mapping again. This time, the picture should have a more "artistic" appeal to it.

You have to play around with the settings during each conversion to get the right results. I usually set strength and Microcontrast (micro tab) to max. The most important other setting to play with is "Light Smoothing". For the first conversion, I usually use Medium to Very High light smoothing.

Sometimes, I repeat the process 3 or 4 times until I get the desired result.

P.S. - I did all this on accident and spent 3 hours trying to figure out what I did!

This is looking down towards Akihabara, Tokyo Japan, from Kabukicho the red light district. This was taken at around 10pm at night and you can see how alive the city still is. Akihabara is well known for its electronic stores and they're everywhere in this particular area of Tokyo. I loved this section near Kabukicho so I stood out in the middle of the crossing and waited for a good scene to develop. There were also heaps of small neon alleyways to explore resembling that of a neon maze from the future! :-) This is one of the main arteries of Tokyo and it always seemed to be busy & flowing.

The backstreet alleys of Kyoto offer an exciting insight into the traditional side of Japan, a window into the past. What stands out to me though, is that many of the religious and cultural practices aren't in the past but instead are really quite current and still being carried out on a day to day basis. So you aren't just witnessing a time from the past but a myriad of ancient to modern worlds entwined all together.

This stone path, with its traditional shops and restaurants, winds its way up the hillsides of Kyoto to the Kiyomizu-dera temple. The temple overlooks Kyoto and offers an amazing view of the entire valley.

Japan. You can explore the alleyway's at your leisure and I

took this composition to show you guys what its like to explore. Pictured here is a little shrine next to a restaurant. I loved how a the shrines always little statues of foxes, like they were guarding them :-) Maybe someone can explain their significance to Japanese religion and spirituality ?

The rain really allowed me to get creative and make an explosion

of colour with this shot and Im happy how its turned out!

Hope you like it, Luke

My Photomatix Tutorial: People have been asking me for a long time for a step by step tutorial, so here it is. Please feel free to post your result in the comments if this helped...=)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To Start

The first and most important program you will need is Photomatix. , you can download the free version here. The free version will leave you with watermarks on your photos, so I highly suggest buying the full version.

Now you've got your HDR program, and your ready to get it on.... right?

Hold on. There's a few other programs your going to need. I hope you already have photoshop, but if you don't there is always Gimp. It's free, and It works. Last but certainly not least. When you are blending multiple exposures there is going to be some noise involved. A great free program for noise reduction is Noiseware Community Edition. Alright, now your good to go.

Shooting Your Images

Now go out and find a beautiful scene to shoot, and take 3-5 photos at different Exposure Values (EV) on a tripod. It's very important to keep the tripod in the same spot, and not to have too many moving subjects around. See below for an example.

Autofocus does work, but using manual focus is much better. I'm pretty sure that goes for all photography though. =)

Pre Processing

So open up Photomatix, and hit Load Bracketed Photos. Now select your photos taken at different exposures.

Next, a box will pop up called Generate HDR Options. Here's what you want to do:

Align source images> By matching feautures

Reduce Ghosting Artifacts: If you have moving subjects. I.E clouds, people. Then checking this Might work for you, but more often than not, it's better to use photoshop for this.

Noise reduction: Noise reduction is always the last step that i do. Because when you sharpen the image, you are going to create noise. So it's best to leave that step for later.

Reduce Chromatic Aberrations Check it!

Alright, now hit O.K, and wait in anticipation for photomatix work it's magic.

Processing:

This is how i do it. Of course, there are many different ways to process an HDR. Everyone has their own style. The more you mess around with the program, the more you'll find your way.

Strenth: 85-100 I almost always leave it at 100, but sometimes if your shot looks a little too harsh, you may want to slide it down a tad.

Saturation: 50-60

Luminosity: always at 10

Micro Contrast: always at 10

Smoothing. This one you want to play around with a little. Most of the time leaving it to max in light mode works best for a natural look. But sometimes it doesn't work so well. In this instance, un-check the box that says "Light mode," and start with the slider all the way to the left. Then inch the slider up little by little, untill the photo looks right. Note: You may want to mess with this one after you've done the settings below.

White point: Usually between 2.000% and up. You'll know when the lighting looks right.

Black point: I always keep this very low usually at 0.000%, to 0.030%.

Gamma: Between 1.40 and 1.00

Temperature: I'm sure you know about this one, so I won't insult your intelligence... =)

Saturation Highlights: 0.0 and up

Saturation Shadows: 0.0 and up

Micro Smoothing: You want to be in the 10 to 15 range. Mess with all options. This is a really important slider to get right.

Highlight and Shadows smoothness: Play around with these a bit. You will know when it looks right.

Shadows Clipping: Always at zero: I have no friggin clue what this is for. If anyone knows. I would love to hear it.

Different lighting conditions will have different results. Somethings work in HDR, and some don't.

O.K, so now your finished in photomatix. Go to Save as, and save it as a TIFF file.

Post Post Processing:

Open up your photo in photoshop, for a few minor, but essential adjustments.

Contrast Adjustment:\ I usually leave a photo a little too bright, so I can boost the contrast a bit.

Saturation/ Vibrance: I use the vibrance tool, but if you don't have it. Saturation will work. Sometimes when I process an HDR it is over saturated, and somtimes it needs a boost. You be the judge on whether or not to increase, decrease or leave it as is.

Unsharp Mask: To get even clearer, crisp details. Do a heavy unsharp mask. I usually set it at 100-125.

Noise Reduction: Finally, your last step will be to get rid of all that noise on your photo. Noiseware is pretty easy to use, and I'm sick of typing(haha), so I'll let you figure that one out on your own. =)

Bada bing, bada boom.... That's all folks! Hope this helps. Just be careful, HDR is highly addictive, you don't want to become an addict like me...do you? ;-D

The Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests seen through the gates of the Imperial Hall of Heaven.

It took me almost ten minutes to take this picture. Every time someone left the shot, someone else walked in. One chap even stepped in front of me and told me to get out of the way so he could take a picture! I finally settled for someone just at the top of the stairs, as being the least crowded I was likely to get.

This is an HDR composite created with Photomatix, using the tone contrast setting. I like it better than the detail-enhancing version of this shot, as it has more depth. Unfortunately the trade-off for that seems to be a washed-out sky.

The lights and colours bounce and reflect off all the water and glass and its just a magical feast for the eyes. I love fireworks and was torn between being in the moment and watching and working my camera :-)

That moment of joy walking home after a surf... Anyone who surfs or that has a special relationship with the ocean can understand how happy this guy is walking home on Bondi Beach.

I got this one down on Bondi Beach a couple of days ago with my Sony A7r and native Sony FE lens, the 28-70mm. It's such a cool camera to shoot with when you are using native glass. Each time you capture a shot the image freezes for you in the viewfinder, because its an Electronic View Finder. It's a small thing but its like an instant image review system, I love it. And because its electronic you can have all this info show up over the image like a horizon bar or even a histogram... plus all of the shot info you like.

I walked through Bryant Park the day before, when the sun was shining, and it seemed like the whole city was out in the park. Every table and chair was being used, people were sitting on the grass reading a book or playing a game. It was quite a contrast to come back the next day and see the park nearly empty. It wasn't raining hard, just a light drizzle, but it was enough to make the table and chairs wet, and the wind made it a lot colder too.

This was a handheld 5 exposure HDR. It is a 32-bit HDR, made using the HDRsoft 32-bit plug-in for Lightroom. Then I used Lightroom, Photoshop, and Nik Color Efex to add a bit of stylization.

Developed a single raw image in HDR style.

Malaysia's city Kuala Lumpur is a city growing at an amazingly fast pace with construction and changes happening everywhere you turn. Without a doubt though the gem of the city are these Petronas twin towers. Every night from sunset to late in the evening there is a dazzling water and light show put on in the fountains outside KLCC, the huge mall there.

Walking down Broadway the Spreckels Theater neon sign stands out from blocks away. I'm a huge fan of neon signs, and luckily there are a handful of them in San Diego. There are a few others I've had my eye on but still haven't photographed. Partially because unlike Spreckels, the other businesses have parking spaces along the curb that clutter the scene with parked cars.

I processed this with the HDRsoft 32-bit HDR plug-in for Lightroom, then used Photoshop with Nik Color Efex and Lightroom to stylize the image.
