I found this shrine whilst exploring at night with my camera. There were people roaming amongst the gardens and temples interacting with their surroundings. A group was ringing these bells by shaking these giant thick ropes that were hanging down off them and the sounds chimed throughout the area.

Taken at night utilizing surrounding light and a few off-camera pops of a Canon 550EX Strobe. Red gel was used on the strobe.

The camera was remote actuated via DSLR Remote by Breeze Systems (an excellent program for remote control of your DSLR) in order to get the 15 bracketed shots. They were at 2/3EV steps. Two complete sets were taken in (30 images in all), from which 26 frames were selected.

A total of 26 images were used in this particular HDR compilation, pulling out some of the shutter-bracketed shots, in order to bias the resulting HDR image a bit brighter and more dynamic.

Photomatix Pro was used (nothing else compares for HDR) in post-processing to produce the results that you see here.

There were some unavoidable flashes from other photographers, as the long-exposures of 10-30 seconds were taken, thus there was more flexibility in having so many extra frames to pick & choose from.

This was taken with the hope of submitting it in the Arizona Highways Chihuly Exhibit Photo Contest . . . wish me luck!

First of all, if you haven't tried the "New Photo Experience" please do, you can switch back. Once you finish, take the time to switch black, click on this link, and vote here if you agree with me. That's an official response blog.

Okay, now that that's said and done, let's talk about the photo. I have about 300, 400 images on my computer that are begging me to edit them. I loved getting the color out of this shot and really punching the lighting. I hope you guys enjoy it as much as me!

I recently decided I wanted to step up my HDR game and went to HDRSoft to try out what they had to offer. Photomatix didn't do it for me, the benefits over Nik's HDR Efex Pro wasn't really there. However, the 32-bit merge for Lightroom... that DID do it for me. And I purchased it and used it to create this HDR. I then, as usual, ran the image through Photoshop and used Nik Color Efex Pro filters to get the image here (Pro Contrast and Brilliance/Warmth continue to kick some major behind).

The ancient Pontocho area of Kyoto, Japan. This place is amazing !

This image is complicated to explain how I made it... but if you know your digital editing It's part digital blend, HDR tone mapping, part Lightroom and Part Filters in Photoshop. I combined pieces from each editing process using 5 source images.

Named for Ward and Betty's daughter Chloe, this former Hawaiian sugar plantation locomotive arrived in 1948.

Car Number: 1

Type: 0-4-2RT Switcher

Builder: Baldwin

Built: 1917

Notes: Chloe- GFRR

History

The Kimballs purchased the Chloe in 1948 from the Waimanalo Sugar Company in Hawaii (where is was their No. 2 "Pokaa"). With the aid of family friend Chad O'Conner, the locomotive was completely redesigned and rebuilt over an 8-year period to make it look like an older locomotive. It was renamed Chloe after the Kimball's second daughter, and entered service in 1956. By this time, Emma Nevada had developed some mechanical problems, which, combined with the neighbor's reaction to all the coal smoke and cinders, made the smaller wood-burning Chloe the line's active engine.

An open trailer car and two passenger-carrying freight cars were built at Grizzly Flats in order to give the Chloe a way to haul passengers. When Emma Nevada, Coach 5, and much of the other Kimball rolling stock left Grizzly Flats in 1992, Chloe and the home-built cars remained behind so that the family could continue their traditional backyard "steam ups". Chloe and her train came to the Museum in 2006.

Another HDR image this is of Boxham Farm in Edenbridge. The original is here.

What I've noticed is that the clouds are far more dynamic but also a lot noiser. Not sure I really like this style of HDR but an interesting alternative.

And thanks everyone, just made #11 for Feb 22, 2008 on Explore!

The way I created this HDR (High Dynamic Range) shot was from one RAW file, save TIFFs as -2 EV, 0 EV and +2 EV. I dragged these into Photomatix, generated the HDR then tonemapped it.

For more info, I found how to do this from the this flickr group. There is a useful thread and I got the tutorial from here. The tutorial is a little out of date as Photomatix has been updated since but you should get the idea.

Also have a look at this flickr group.

I have been playing around with a tryout version of Photomatix (http://www.hdrsoft.com/) today. I think I will most definetly buy this piece of software. Anyway this is taken somewhere near Þorlákshöfn on a rather dark and overcast day. It's a blend of 2 exposures which were then tone mapped. I can't wait to do some more of this. Next time I will try to include something interesting in the frame and not just put the horizon in the middle etc. etc. :)

You know that moment in the afternoon when you hold your hand up to shield your eyes from some reflected sunlight on the glass of a skyscraper… That moment when it warms the skin on your cheeks and forehead, so you raise your chin with your eyes closed to bask a little more in its glory. Nothing exists outside of this moment… “The reflected Sunlight”

A visit to Roaring Camp Railroads (www.roaringcamp.com) gave me an opportunity to take some HDR (High Dynamic Range) photos. HDR photos are achieved by taking several photos at different exposure levels (overexposed thru underexposed) and merging them into one perfectly exposed photo. Using the software program Photomatic Pro 5.0 by HDRsoft (hdrsoft.com), I can then choose a style from natural to painterly or surreal, and adjust settings to get the look I want. The entire process is very simple and results can be spectacular.

The photos are of the steam locomotive Dixiana. She was built in 1912 and is designated a National Mechanical Engineering Historical Landmark. She saw service on the famous Smokey Mountain Railroad in Tennessee and later several short line railroads in California. She was acquired by the Roaring Camp Railroads in 1963. She is a two-truck engine, weighs 42 tons with a tractive effort of 17,330 lbs. and has 29 ½" drivers. Three 10 x 12 inch cylinders can maintain 180 pounds working pressure.

The great dynamic color range comes from blending different exposures together and using a tone mapping software program to bring out those colors that were present when the shots were taken, but don't normally show up in a one exposure photo.

Sitting under the cool shade of a coloured Japanese Maple is

the best place to view this Golden Temple in Kyoto. As you take in the temple your eyes wander to the lake which offers a series of tiny island's populated with Japanese Garden Tree's pruned like puffy clouds. I was reminded of a scene from Alice in Wonderland and the garden of the Queen of hearts... "Off with her head!" :-)

The Zen Buddhist temple, Kinkaku-ji, has fallen to attacks

during war times in japan and its history dates back to 1397 ! As you wander caretakers quietly go about their business sweeping up leaves or shaping bushes and the amount of individual attention given to all aspects of the garden is something I love about Japanese culture. In a world livid with technology their devotion to nature and spiritual enlightenment is a very attractive quality. It isn't just in these public gardens that you see this kind of attention to detail, but also in nearly every house and apartment across Japan :-)

This was shot at 5:45am 06/09/2012 looking across Sydney Harbour. Can you spot your house ? You can see the harbour Bridge just to the left of centre on the horizon and the Sydney CBD on the far left.

In the centre is my Mecca the "Art Gallery of New South Wales" (AGNSW for short) where I've spent many an hour walking, staring and pondering creation.... It helped me expand my mind to think outside the square. Artist's which I recall really having an effect on my artistic development from AGNSW were Yves Klein, Brett Whiteley, Francis Bacon and Roy DeMaistre. What I liked about the gallery the most was that it dedicated an entire level to Australian painters and it made me proud of what our country has produced and achieved as a culture

An abandoned Residential home in South Wales, damaged by an arson attack.

Tonemapped with HDR Photomatix 'details enhancer' to bring all the decaying details out.

Waiting for the last ferry to Langdale, I decided to see if I could capture the incredible blue light in the northern sky. I'm not certain I succeeded. This composition isn't that good: I didn't spot the "poop and scoop" sign, which I couldn't crop out, and ignored the foreground (which I did crop out). What I should have done is moved closer to the shore, to provide something of interest in the foreground.

The lighted structure to the right is the new ferry terminal; to the left you see the marina.

This is a high dynamic range composite made from three RAW images using Photomatix, then tweaked in Aperture.

Aperture adjustments: crop, definition, colors.

Since purchasing MacPhun's new HDR software, AuroraHDR Pro over the holidays, I made sure to capture plenty of bracketed exposures to jump head-first into the program (I've used HDRsoft's Photomatix Pro dating back to late 2006)

The Story

In the summer I was lucky enough to spend 3 weeks on a Route 69 Road Trip in the USA. Part of the trip took us to The Joshua Tree National Park on the edge of which this shot was taken. In the UK we dont hve mail boxes so this was a real novelty to me and my kiddies

The Shot

3 exposure shot (-1,0,+1) from using my D200 and a Nikon 12-24mm lens handheld

Opened in Photomatix with detail enhancer set to default.

Then modified using Topaz Adjust , to increase colour and sharpness.

Saturation then boosted and areas of noise reduced.

The noise reduced with Noiseware .

Sensor dust spots and blemishes removed and frame added.

This is the view when you come out of Tokyo Station into the business district of Marunouchi. The main reason tourists come to this train station is to go to the Imperial Palace, which is a short stroll up to the left of frame.

The Tower

This morning I was planning to head to the north heads at the mouth entrance to Sydney Harbour but after waking to a stary sky on the eastern horizon I decided to head to a location with a little more action. This location is down below the joggers path at Bondi with the landmark building the Bondi Iceberg Baths in shot.
