As I become more comfortable in this city I've been exploring her natural features and there are just so many amazing places to view the Sydney CBD from. This view was taken just after sunset from Mrs Macquaries Chair, it has one the best views of Sydney Harbour without a doubt.

So many are asking me about Photomatix HDR. So here are the HDR facts and some guidance.

HDR stands for high dynamic range. You can get more information from www.hdrsoft.com. There's also a flickr group HDR ( flickr.com/groups/hdr/ ) that is focused with this new technique. Photoshop CS2 has HDR rendering too but my preference is to use Phtotomatix.

Now, this is not a replacement for graphic software like Photoshop. HDR is using multiexposure pictures and blending them into one great picture. But still, it all depends on the person who is using Photomatix. Like you either want more sugar or less for your coffee I guess.

HDR can be very good and very addictive. And take care ...

This is the Most famous Coast line in Australia known as Surfer's Paradise on the Gold Coast in South-East Queensland. I had to go up 77 stories to get this kind of perspective. Just 2 weeks ago I had a view across Tokyo Japan, a city of 20 million people, from 60 stories up but this I have to say is a beautiful view and has my heart, as it is my home :-) Everyone always has a sense of nostalgia for their own country

This amazing Bamboo Forest is located just a short train ride outside of Kyoto, and its just like a surreal dream. I'll never forget my visit because it was raining so heavy that I had to buy myself an umbrella to explore the area. If you are only in a place once, you can't let a little rain stop you from enjoying it.

I battled the elements with my nikon D800 + nikkor 14-24mm on my tripod holding the umbrella over my camera whilst I got soaked, had to get my priorities right ! ... I had an amazing rain jacket but was wearing jeans and they seemed to weigh about 20kg full of water. I shot about 10 HDR brackets, some with groups literally 2 meters from the lens but this was my favorite of a group of Japanese girls and their pink umbrellas wandering off down the path

This was shot from the Delta Sky Club on E-Concourse one evening.

My apologies for the short pause of my Sydney posts. Some stuff went down at work last week that took me by surprise and caused life to come to a quick halt. Luckily I survived the turmoil, and life is slowing getting back to normal again now. But MAN, Its been a very tough week for the animation and fx industry.

One of my wife and I's favorite activities while in Sydney was to visit the Opera House Bar. We actually made two trips to this local hot spot during our week in Sydney. The first trip was when we arrived. We had read about it in the guide books so after getting settled in our hotel it was the first place we went. We had such a great time we made a second trip just to have another excuse to enjoy a glass of wine and stare at the Opera House some more. Of course the second time we came prepared and I took this picture right around sunset and blue hour. Afterwards, I enjoyed a wonderful glass of white wine with my wife soaking it all in.

If you look on the left there are these great places to sit while you drink your glass of wine while relaxing and chatting the night away with good company. Such an awesome spot! Sydney is truly a magical place.

How this shot was made:

Canon 5d mkII, Canon 16-36mm f2.8L II Lens

ISO 320, f16, 8 sec (Base Exposure)

5 Bracketed exposures (-2,-1,0,+1,+2) taken on location. Exported 5 exposures to HDRsoft's Merge to 32-bit tiff plugin to combine into 32bit floating point tiff. Lightroom adjustments on the 32bit tiff to get it as close to final as I could.

Digital Blending: Took 0 exposure, and 32-bit Tiff into CS6 and painted back in the crowd to fix a ton of ghosting from the 32-Bit Tiff plugin. I also did some selective cloning to fix some issues around the wall and water line. I still couldn't get ride of all of the movement but in some ways I actually really like it. It conveys the commotion of the place and really how it felt that night. Also added a "Highpass" layer for sharpening of the opera house just to give it a little more clarity.

Final adjustments in Lightroom 4. Added a small Vignette to finish it off.

Want to learn how what this all means and how I process my images? Check out my new tutorial on my website.

The Story

We found this huge rock (notice the trees at its base to appreciate its size) in the Joshua Tree National Park.

The skies above were amazing... just look at those clouds.

There were lizards everywhere and probably snakes though we didnt see any of these. The park was huge compared to the UK National Parks.

What an amazing country .... a photographers dream come true, albeit a little hot !!!!!!

Scott L Miller as seen here actuating his Canon 40D remotely; bracketed photos via the Acer Aspire Netbook Computer allows him to rendfer supurb HDR images! We use DSLRRemote software to achieve this.

This was a terrific viewpoint of the Grand Canyon North Rim!

Taken at the tail end of sunset (about 06:30pm), using a Canon 5D, with a Sigma 17-35mm lens @ 17mm, ISO 100, f5.0. I "had" to get this shot of Scott at work!

Photomatix Pro was used during post-processing, to render this particular Single-Frame HDR shot.

Found this lovely little seat just outside the village of Gumley in Leicester-shire, found it to be very relaxing.

This is "Waumbeck", the last of the coal fired steam locomotives making the trip up Mount Washington, New Hampshire.

Throughout our lives, hiking the southwestern flanks of the Presidential Range in New Hampshire was accompanied by the Mount Washington Cog Railway, originally started in 1869. There was no ignoring these beasts. With piercing steam whistle blasts and the clanking of the rails, hiking solitude was broken on a frequent basis. The most noteworthy part of the railway was the huge cloud of billowing, black smoke coming from the smokestack. And at any time, there could be three, four, five trains on the mountain at one time, and each train burned one ton of coal for the trip. If you hiked anywhere near the tracks, you'd often be enveloped in the choking black smoke.

Hikers came to nickname the train, "The Cumulus Bituminous."

No longer.

"Waumbeck" is the only coal train still running, and it only makes one trip up the mountain, the first of the day. All other trains running up and down the mountain are now powered by biodiesel fuel. (Now it'll smell like french fries, I suppose.) Although the venerable coal trains have long been a tradition on the mountain, I'm glad that we can all breathe easier now.

This is Portland Bill lighthouse in Dorset.

I'm not really a fan of HDR, but as the lighting was so variable, I thought I'd try some auto-bracketing and see how it turned out.

This is a 3-shot 1-stop bracket (handheld) with the Tokina 11-16mm lens, merged in the trial of Photomatix Pro (www.hdrsoft.com/).

Better on black.

This is the place to burn money in Tokyo and its called Ginza. All the wealthy and attractive people of Japan shop here... and I have to admit sometimes work can be really hard on me ;-)

I took a long exposure composition of the Georgio Armani and Dior stores whilst giving it depth by positioning my the view right down just one of the shopping alleys of this district.

A gorgeous glowing cove off the edge of the South Head entrance to Sydney Harbour. The night temperature's are so nice in the summer here that even a little night swimming is possible. A few couples were in the water splashing about as I shot this image and I was tempted to jump in myself. This has to be one of my favourite images I've created with the Sony A7r so far and I got to pair it with my favourite lens the Nikkor 14-24mm.

After walking across the Harbour Bridge, the night before, I glanced over and saw this park. I knew instantly it would be the perfect spot to have a romantic picnic with Jenn and enjoy the sunset. It also would be a good spot to take some photo's and luckily my wife was very understanding about me slipping away after our picnic and doing some photography.

We got to the park early with some "take away" we got earlier from the mall food court where the "Sydney Sky Tower" attraction was. We sat on a bench and enjoyed talking, eating, and taking it all in!

There were all kinds of people in the park. Couples who had the same idea we did, other's were taking a workout class that just looked brutal, and a birthday party with a group of friends drinking wine and having a good time. We also ran into an older woman who took special interest in my camera and us. She lived just down the street and every night she walked down to the park to enjoy the sunset. After talking to her for a bit we began to pickup on some signs of early stages of dementia. She was repeating certain memories about herself a lot and you could tell she was a little disoriented but still pretty functional. She was such a sweet lady. We both thought about her a lot afterwards hoping for good things for her in the future.

It was a good night, and wonderful to spend time with my sweet wife!

How this shot was made:

Canon 5D mkII, 16-35mm f2.8L II

28mm F9, ISO 640, at 13sec (Base Exposure)

5 Bracketed exposures (-2,-1,0,+1,+2) taken on location. Exported 5 exposures to HDRsoft's Merge to 32-bit tiff plug-in. Lightroom adjustments on the 32bit tiff to get it as close to final as I could. Further adjustments in photoshop, including sharpening using "Highpass" filter, and some luminance masking adjustments for saturation to the sky, and healing brush touch ups.

If you want more info on how I do my processing. Check out my tutorial on the Merge to 32-bit HDR method: www.joshuaguntherphotography.com/merge-to-32-bit-hdr-tuto...

Here is another one of The Halloween Tree in Frontierland.

I processed this using the 32-bit HDRsoft plug-in for Lightroom. It makes it a lot easier than using Photomatix, but also has a slightly different look. I used Topaz Adjust, Nik Color Efex and Photoshop to add some style and pull out some details.

3 exposure shot (-1,0,+1) from using my D200 and a Nikon 24-70mm lens mounted on a tripod.

Opened in Photomatix with detail enhancer set to default.

Then modified using Topaz Adjust , to increase colour and sharpness.

Saturation then boosted and contrast adjusted using curves.

The noise reduced with Noiseware .

Sensor dust spots and blemishes removed and frame added.

After the sun goes down the lights turn on, and the crowds come to town ready to hit the bars. San Diego has all kinds of hot spots, all with their own appeal. The Double Deuce has a mechanical bull where you can test your chops as a bull rider.

This is a 32-bit HDR processed in Lightroom 4 with the HDRsoft 32-bit plug-in. The rest of the processing was done in Photoshop with a Hue/Saturation layer, a curves adjustment layer, and a duplicate layer blended using the soft light mode.

I use Photomatix alot but in some situations it just doesn't work. In this comparison you can see how photomatix has introduced a ton of noise (view at max size). To get what I wanted I brought all 5 exposures into Photoshop and painted in all the correct exposures with layer masks. It was a long process but it got me the results I wanted. I just discovered that the same people that make Photomatix have a Lightroom plugin called Merge to 32-bit HDR Plug-in for Lightroom. You export your exposures into one super tiff file with all the info from all 5 exposures. Then it reimports the tiff back into Lightroom where you make all your adjustments in raw. You can see that there is almost no difference between the layered Photoshop file and the Merge to 32 bit HDR. The areas you will see a difference are in the lanterns and Pinocchio which were burned down in Photoshop. All adjustments to the 32 bit HDR where only made with sliders in Lightroom. You can download a free trial at hdrsoft.com/download.html and to purchase is only $29.

Thanks Neil Kremer for the tip. I'd struggled with halos on this photo, and thought I'd give Photomatix's new Merge to 32 bit option a try. Follow the instructions at hdrsoft and Wow! I'm impressed! Lightroom and (I think) light Topaz adjustments.

Ma is a Japanese word which can be roughly translated as "gap", "space", "pause" or as "the space between two structural parts." In Japanese, ma suggests interval. It is best described as a consciousness of place, not in the sense of an enclosed three-dimensional entity, but the simultaneous awareness of form and non-form deriving from an intensification of vision.

Ma is the thing that takes place in the imagination of the human who experiences these elements. Therefore ma can be defined as experiential place understood with emphasis on interval.

There is no equivalent single word term for Ma in the English language. Sad, but true.

In composing this, I recalled the extraordinary and controversial work of John Cage with his composition 4'33" wherein the three movements are performed without a single note being played, allowing it to be perceived as the sounds of the environment that the listeners hear while it is performed

Thirty spokes meet in the hub,

but the empty space between them

is the essence of the wheel.

Pots are formed from clay,

but the empty space between it

is the essence of the pot.

Walls with windows and doors form the house,

but the empty space within it

is the essence of the house.

A stunning scene inside the mouth of a cave where a river has carved out a small section of the roof and created a waterfall inside the cave. It was a truly beautiful Australian place down in the valley of a rainforest.

This place was Cold with a capital C, as you can plainly see.

And worse, I had forgotten my special little gloves with the flip-up fingertips.

So I was goin' finger-commando while trying to line up this shot. The wind was pretty stiff in my face. The wind always seems to be against you, eh? I think I just never notice it when it comes from any other angle.

By the way, there is only one place that is convenient to quickly warm up your fingers ...
