This is the view from Mount Amos overlooking Wineglass Bay, in Tasmania Australia. It's about a 45 minute hike up to the lookout which had to be done with a torch as it was pretty dark. This storm coming in from the Tasman Sea ended up bringing snow storms to the Midlands, which I almost got trapped in later that afternoon. Fantastic View though and well worth the effort.

HDR is a funny thing. You just never know how things are going to turn out until you get back to the computer.

I honestly feel like this is my most refined and well balanced shot to this day. This is HDR from 5exp (using Photomatix 3.0, which I HIGHLY recommend). I generally shoot 3exp because that's what the D70s does, but I can really tell the difference with 5exp (and if you don't have a bunch of speedy clouds up there, you've got the time to manually set the exposures).

Explore: 7 (wow. that's my highest ever!)

I downloaded Photomatix tonight and quickly tonemapped this shot. I'm impressed with the ease of use, power and control it allows and am eager to play when I have more time.

The nearby fires obscured the view and created a haze most of the afternoon at Crater Lake National Park in Oregon. Yet that same smoke pollution made for some spectacular orange sunset colors. This is a 5-shot hdr image. I used HDR to get more detail in both the lightest and the darkest areas of the photo. Getting detail is especially difficult for low-light shots.

It is a real joy to be able to use my eyes, my camera, and my developing skills to allow you my friends to be able to share in a special moment like this one. Photography has a wonderful ability to transport us into the time, place, and experience of another human being.

Truly a miracle.

I took Sat. afternoon off and headed the 2 1/2hr drive down to Crabtree Falls. I had never been there before though it had been on my list for a while. This is the lower section of the falls seen from the first platform. I was only able to spend a couple hours there before I needed to start the drive back but it was very much worth the trip. The pictures don't do the location justice as the wide angle flattens the image and you lose some of the height and depth.

The spring greens were just amazing. I've got lots of photos from the trip so I'm sure many more images will make there way on to flickr:)

This is a 3 shot HDR processed with HDRSoft 32-bit merge tool, Lightroom 4 and OnOne's Perfect Effects. I'm not sure I like the extra sharpening that flickr added to the mid-sized image. The original is a little softer and I like it better:)

Refections ( Yansıma ) at the entrance of Olympos...

My first attempts at HDR... I also like this possibly use of treatment because my end result is to enlarge these types of photos from framing..

I have downloaded the trail version of Photomatix....to try it out for awhile to see if I like it or not...sorry for the watermarks on the photos but this is just a test using HDR....I did take many bracketed photos over the weekend as the clouds and lighting seemed to be the perfect chance to test this out....

After trying out a few of these images in HDR I am now seriously considering this program ..because the effects are so cool especially on cloudy days to bring out colors and details etc.

This is a three exposure HDR image.

Do you like this version ??? I may invest in the program a little bit down the road..

Auto-Exposure Bracketing (AEB), select the Continuous Shooting mode, make sure the camera is set to Aperture Priority, and select an exposure increment of +/-2.

Almost. I've been wanting to delve into the world of HDR and tonemapping so I downloaded a free trial of Photomatix. I didn't have any shots of multiple exposure so I improvised by making two different images of the same thing in Lightroom. One image was heavily de-saturated, the other rather hideously colored. I combined them in Photomatix and got this. I have to say i was pretty impressed with the control of and options when it came to the processing power of Photomatix. So impressed, i'll probably buy a version soon. (This shot was taken inside Mack Glass in Downtown Bloomington.)

This is one of the other shot's I got whilst in the Cradle Mountain National Park. The lake area reminds me of the crater of a volcano and I like how you are so high up that the peaks of the mountains are shrouded in clouds.

So I am embarrassed that I didn't upload an image for my 365 yesterday. It was raining outside and I had put HDR as my theme for week one and didn't know what I wanted to photograph inside the house for HDR. So I thought about it all day and came up with what I thought were good ideas. But when I viewed them on the computer I really was not happy at all.

I am not the type of person that can upload something I am not happy with. I guess the mentality of a person that is serious about a 365 project is willing to upload something everyday, even if they are not too happy about their image. I just can't bring myself to do something like that. Up until recently my uploads were not very frequent due to being way to picky. I am not saying I am great or anything, but I at least need to be willing to stand behind my image and I don't think I will be able to do that for a 365 project. Maybe when I get more experience and knowledge I can try again. I will do my best to upload images on a regular basis.

This image is an hdr image comprised of three 30 second exposures. I applied a lot of dodging and burning.

Thanks for looking.

EXPLORED

On my way to Dinajpur tour, I found this beetle infront of roadside restaurant, they just put it there as a display. Its registration got expired on 2001 and the poor beetle found its place off the road as a show for the highway passerby. I always liked beetles; they are impressive no matter what’s their condition.

Instead of taking single shot, I made HDR of this colourful legend. Hope you guys will like it.

Tips and tricks about HDR

HDR means High Dynamic Range and High Dynamic Range Imaging ( HDRI ) is a set of techniques allowing to capture a greater dynamic exposures( range of values between light and dark areas )than normal imaging techniques. The intention of HDRI is to accurately represent the wide range of intensity levels found in real scenes ranging from direct sunlight to shadows.

This is how this image was shot

Camera: Canon EOS 400D / Rebel XTi

Lens: Canon EF 50mm f/1.8

Exposure: 3 different exposures using canon’s AEB function(check your manual) in raw format. They were then combined into one image using Photomatix software.

Aperture: f/7.1 (for more clear image set it f/11)

Shooting mode: Manual exposure

Shutter speed: 1/125

Focal Length: 50mm

ISO Speed: 100

Use a tripod for clear shots; I used hand held because I had no choice.

Shoot interesting subject with camera well focused & aperture greater then f/11 to f/22 which will give a clear image without any depth of field. Make sure your canon’s AEB function is on. When you turn it on, three consecutive shots will give three different exposed pictures. We need those three shots. Since three of the shots will be combined into one picture, it’s important that you retain same camera position in these three shots.

Now if you have Photomatrix already, click on its Generate function to combine 3 of those images to one HDR image. If you don’t have Photomatrix, download it from here www.hdrsoft.com . this software is not free, however you can download the evaluating version for free. Try it before you are purchasing it.

After Photomatrix generates HDR image, it wont look glamour’s, you need to play with the Tone Mapping function a bit for different colour. Click on HDR | Tone Mapping, along the top toolbar and use the following settings to start with:

Luminosity 0

Strength 46

ColorSaturation 68

WhiteClip 0.25

BlackClip 0.00000

Smoothing High

Microcontrast High

360Image No

After that, you save it in your pc in TIF format(this keeps much colour information than JPG format.

Open your saved TIF version of HDR to your adobe photoshop. Here you apply some adjustments like curves, shadow / highlight and sharpening. You can also add frames or use different actions to give your HDR the way you think it looks cool.

HDR images totally depend on the artist about its looks. Its totally an explosion of colours. Don’t feel afraid of trying different settings of the software.

The above image was taken one early morning of the The Three Graces in Liverpool. It was around sunrise and although I couldn't get any images of the sun rising you can see the light as it just hits the top of the buildings leaving the lower part of the buildings looking darker. It was used for a Lightroom / Photomatix HDR demo that I did on Thursday 7th June 2012 for Welshot Imaging.

It was taken with a Canon 5D Mark II with a 17-40 F4L lens in Auto Exposure Braketing mode (-2, 0, +2) and then the resultant images where processed using Adobe Lightroom and HDRSoft Photomatix.

We'll be announcing our workshop series for 2016 shortly, including a visit or two to this cool spot.

This was a hand-held 5-shot sequence, post-processed in Adobe Lightroom 5 and HDRsoft Photomatix 5.

I had just finished taking this shot: www.flickr.com/photos/joshuagunther/8411763643/in/photost.... The light in the sky was fading but I knew If I ran for it I might be able to capture the Opera House with a bit of "Blue" left in the sky before it went completely dark for the night. I asked a group of 20 somethings having a picnic next to me if there was an easy way to get onto the Harbour Bridge. In a somewhat drunken stouper they pointed me in the right direction. Down the park, onto the street, under the bridge, up a stairwell, and onto the bridge.....Ok got it!

I quickly ran with my 20 pounds of camera gear and my tripod over my shoulder, probably looking like an LA Paparazzi running after Linsey Lohan, trying to make it before the light was gone. Eventually I made it to the stairwell. As I got to the top, there it was, the beautiful Opera House in perfect blue hour light! I snapped off my brackets and was excited I made it in time. Maybe I could get a few more shots if I keep moving.

About that time a couple, walked up behind me, looked at my view and snapped the same shot with their iphone. "Wow great view Mate", the guy said. I replied, "Totally! But, I got to run! I'm going to try and get a few more shots".

I decided to continue onto the bridge to see what I might be able to find. I stopped at several locations along the way snapping off brackets and just being totally blown away by the view and feeling of being up high on the Harbour Bridge.

I kept running into the same couple over and over as they would catch up to me after I ran ahead to setup my next shot. Every time the same guy would snap a shot with his iphone as if to say, "I must have the best spot so I'll take one too". It became rather comforting to keep running into them. It got me to slowly let my guard down a bit and enjoy what I was experiencing.

I began to look around me at the people walking on the bridge. They were mostly families, couples, and kids all laughing and enjoying the view as they walked along. There was a feeling of overwhelming joy, and happiness of everyone. Stress was low and enjoyment high. It was wonderful! Even better, this was at 9-10clock at night!

Normally in LA, you don't see families walking around at night, especially on a dark bridge, of all places. Most of the time we are taught that is where rapists and drug dealers hangout so don't even think about hanging out there. But not so in Sydney. In fact for the very short week we were there, we were blown away by how safe the city felt to us. Everything from the subway stations, to bridges, and parks all felt safer then any other city we had been in overseas or even domestic. It was a wonderful feeling and one that will always stick in my mind when I remember Sydney!

How this shot was made:

Canon 5DmkII, 16-35mm f2.8L Lens

24mm, F8, ISO 1000, 13sec(Base Exposure)

5 Bracketed exposures (-2,-1,0,+1,+2) taken on location. Exported 5 exposures to HDRsoft's 32bit tiff plugin to combine into 32bit floating point tiff. Lightroom adjustments on the 32bit tiff to get it as close to final as I could.

Digital Blending with the -1 exposure to add contrast of the buildings and opera house. Added sharpening using the "Highpass" filter and a layer mask. Also painted out some distracting elements in the water using the clone, and healing brush tools.

Final adjustments in Lightroom 4. Added .3 to exposure to finish.

I have been experimenting with creating blended HDR images using one RAW file. I take a handheld shot with my Nikon D80 and then using Adobe Photoshop Lightroom I create three files - one overexposed, one underexposed and one correctly exposed.

I then blend those three files together with Photomatix software to create a high dynamic range image that more closely resembles the center of this magnificent rose when it is viewed in person. The three exposures allow for more nuances of color and light.....

If you'd like to download a free trial of Photomatix, you can find it at www.hdrsoft.com

I wasn't satisfied with the single exposures I was getting at this point in the sunrise yesterday, so I combined 3 exposures to produce this result. In a single exposure some of the highlight detail was getting lost in blocks of color, and the foreground rocks were too black as well, so I ran three exposures through Photomatix HDR software to recover the highlight and shadow detail.

Ironically, High Dynamic Range (HDR) software has a reputation for producing low dynamic range images, when heavy-handed use leads to garish images with large solid splotches of color with lost detail. That reputation is not entirely deserved though, since careful use can often result in highlight and shadow detail being improved instead of destroyed.

White balance was set to 5412. I adjusted exposure, brightness, whites and shadows (contrast, clarity, vibrance, saturation were all left at 0), then I used the Lightroom plug-in from HDRsoft to create an HDR file and transfer a 16-bit TIFF file back to Lightroom.

I think everyone has spots like this, a place you've seen and always wanted to photograph but just haven't done it. I've driven past this sign probably 100 times. I've seen it in good light, bad light, at night, during the day, rain, sun, clouds, just about every condition imaginable. The difference between all those times and this one, was I finally decided to stop.

I really like old signs, I tend to like them even more when they're neon, but there's something about this one I especially like. Maybe because it's called "rustic", but more likely because of the "just right" amount of tilt that helps show the age of the sign.

As I started processing this I couldn't help but think about the return of Breaking Bad. This feels like it could be a location from the show, a desolate motel in the middle of the desert. As I processed it, that's the look I tried to achieve. I did almost all of the processing for this in Lightroom. Starting with the HDRsoft 32-bit HDR plug-in, then just sliders in Lightroom to adjust color, contrast, detail, etc

Here's one from Surfer's Paradise. I shot this one night after doing a shoot for a client and forgot about it till today. This is a 5 bracket HDR on a Nikon D800 and I made exposure times of 2,4,8,16 and 30 seconds. Processing was done in Photomatix, Perfect Effects 4 and Photoshop.

A view of the valley from my favourite mellowing out spot.

This is a 9 exposure HDR, but has been processed with Photomatix 2.5 beta, the new, soon to be released version. Thanks go to Uncommon for informing us. You can get a free trial here Windows Mac. I tried processing this photo with the old version but the results were pretty poor. With the new version you have more control and options. It's worth the download.

Opening in 1937, the Golden Gate Bridge is likely the most recognizable landmark from the west coast of the United States.

I processed this with the HDRsoft 32-bit HDR plug-in for Lightroom. Then did almost all of the processing within Lightroom. I had to go to Photoshop to clone out all the light trails from air traffic and a few stars. Sticking to Lightroom has sped up my processing quite a bit. I can usually finish processing 1 or 2 images a night, last night I went exclusively with the 32-bit HDR plug-in and Lightroom for almost all of my processing and I managed to get through 5 images.

There are a handful of effects I didn't use since I didn't open Nik Color Efex, and I missed out on some of the look that comes from Photomatix, but the 32-bit process is really clean and super fast. I think I'll keep flipping back and forth between Photomatix and the 32-bit plug-in, they're both fun ways to process images. Next up for me is learning techniques for Luminance Mask HDRs.

Here is an incredible view of the towers from across KLCC park, an HDR image shot with my Sony A7r. We'd gone up to the skybar for some drinks, as it is a must-do on every tourists visit to Kuala Lumpur apparently, and the view was to die for. This HDR image brings back many happy memories for me and I hope you enjoy it too. Malaysia is such an amazing country and has taken a special place in my heart.
