Crab boats at night on the horizon behind Haystack Rock at Pacific City on Oregon's coast.

The Haystack and Needles, Cannon Beach, Oregon

No, the other one. In fact, there are three Haystack Rocks in Oregon. The most famous one is at Cannon beach, one that gets lost in the crowd in Coos Bay, Bandon, and this one, the tallest of the three by more than 100 feet. (It just doesn't look it because its further away.)

You can find this baby at Pacific City, Cape Kawanda and it is conveniently located just West of the Pelican Brewery parking lot.....

Now, open another tab, go to Youtube, search ocean waves crashing on a beach, blow this up. You're welcome....

From Ecola State Park you can enjoy a fantastic view of Cannon Beach and Haystack Rock – if the usual summer coastal fog takes a break. This panorama is famous from the movie "The Goonies" which was filmed here in the early 1980s.

Crashing waves continue their assault on Haystack Rock, Oregon coast.

I posted this one before but, after the reaction to yesterday's post, I thought I'd bring this one to the fore.

They do not come close to shore, but stay near the outcrops in the middle of the ocean just offshore. Offshore enough so that, without a boat, we never would have seen them. Those outcrops, btw, are off limits. Haystack Rock on the Oregon coast is famous for the puffins. Btw,

The Horned Puffin was also there when we went out. The image is below.

Shortly after sunrise on a chilly morning.

In the Oregon Coastal Range.

Went to see the Tufted Puffins. Saw zero. Those specks above Haystack Rock are hundreds of Seagulls.

I still really need to see a Tufted Puffin. A friend said he saw some in the ocean near Ecola State Park. . Since I don't understand the map function in this new format, this was taken at Cannon Beach, 45.88546, -123.96487. Oregon

Horseback riding in Cannon Beach, Oregon

After a day to restore body and bike, 63-mile ride from Bandon to Gold Beach. A beautiful day along the coast. Caught up with fellow cyclists that I met in Pacific City.

Pacific City to Newport. 50 miles with one grueling painful climb due to a missed turn. But a wonderful sunny day otherwise.

Another beautiful early dawn view from Cannon Beach, looking south toward Haystack Rock.

Haystack Rock ~ took this of my grand daughter after a good rain. The wind was blowing catching her jean jacket, and hair for a dreamy look of exploration and freedom to run.

I also enjoyed reading about Haystack rock info ~ This one is the Haystack Rock at Pacific City, and the other is the Haystack Rock in Cannon Beach, Oregon.

(which only looks larger because it's closer, but the Pacific City one is taller by 100 ft + and is about a mile out).

One story has it that the original name of the rock was Chief Kiawanda Rock, named after the head of the local tribe - actually called the Nestugga (as opposed to Nestucca, which stuck to various area landmarks).

However, to throw another twist into this tale, there is yet a third Haystack Rock – in Coos County in Bandon. — at Cape Kiwanda Pacific City Oregon.

Thanks everyone for your visits and warm comments,

Left Seaside for Tillamook, today. Started out nice and sunny, but ended up in a torrential storm, 25 mph headwind, and a flat 5 miles from my destination!

Soaked and cold. Definitely my worst day so far.

Cannon Beach, OR

A pair of surfers brave the cold Pacific Ocean waves in the shadow of Haystack Rock, Cannon Beach, Oregon.

A road trip along the Oregon coast had been on my bucket list for a long time. South of Cannon Beach, the coast is particularly rugged with many small bays and beaches—but unfortunately, it's hopelessly overcrowded in summer. While hardly anyone dares to swim in the icy Pacific Ocean, crowds still flock to the beaches. We'll probably come back sometime when it's less crowded.
