My hard-disc crashed two weeks ago. Yesterday I had some time left to start 'Operation Repair'. Together with some skilled colleagues we re-routed some wires, installed software and managed to bring the monster back to life. Hurray! The cause of all this? Maybe the dust on the wires is a clue...

Still messing around with my 18-50mm, this time tripod mounting it and taking some close-ups of my dead HD.
This was my main HD up until recently, only 3 years old it popped it's clogs one morning after boot-up (I think I'd loaded a Prodigy MP3). Luckily this drive was part of an array and so no data lost, however I have lost muchos data in the past.
That said I still managed to nearly lose all the data on the mirror drive. Amidst the confusion of transferring data off the old drive I managed to delete all the partitions (don't ask) and effectively wiped the drive.
After tearing my hear out trying to scrape the data off the drive with disaster recovery software, I had a think and remembered what I'd done and reversed it. Luckily for me there is software out there that can recreate partitions and magically all my data re-appeared. I now backup at least once a month.
Lessons to be learnt? Plenty. Anyway I now keep this HD on my desk as a paper weight and a reminder to back-up.

I'm off. will take a break. enough indecent peeks into my world. exhibitionist games on internet, the new portal of the many. sorry to be so cynical. what else to say ? ah yeah, I noticed few days ago in paris that at one certain moment near the tour eiffel, in a glimpse, that a few hundreds, maybe thousand of people where shooting pictures of themselves and that iron thing. make the math. I guess a few million pics are shot there daily, day after day. they end up on some computer, some iPod, some viewer, some harddisk. millions. and more millions. think about that. like pieces of sand on a beach, images. dirty pixels. goodnight. 2009.
Going through my harddisk and found that I haven't posted this photo before. It was taken in Spain in 2005. Nice place and I don't mind going back!

Pair of low-rpm low-power drives used in second NAS (exile) for offsite backup.
Update 1.5 Y later -- working great in my old DNS-323.
Drives now 2 years old at 24/7, still working great.
Checking out a possible failure on the 2nd drive of the backup unit, perhaps at the beginning of 2013 or so?
