Gonna send it in and see whether I can salvage all my shots...
Hard drive - 100MB - by IBM. Lots of info on the drive.
I take pictures of stuff that I'll throw out. Made in Japan. I bet this drive still works if you hook it up to some old 68K Mac...
A little lesson learnt from messing about partitions... ouch... Thank goodness I had the sense to back up all my photos first :)
I recently opened up my computer to discover that the SATA data connector on one of my hard drives broke. six of the seven prongs were still there, but the plastic bit they were attached to got stuck in the cable and snapped off of the hard drive itself, leaving six prongs sticking out of the hard drive, hovering in air.
I needed data on the hard drive, and the power connection was still fine, so my roommate and I managed to cannibalize the cable, strip the wire, and solder directly onto the pins. and it worked! I managed to image the drive onto some free space. if my warranty has already elapsed, then I'll take the drive apart and create a series of photographs of it - otherwise, I'll get it fixed/replaced.
I've been unearthing some old photos from the remote reaches of my harddisk because I'm a bit homesick for the empty country roads of China. This was in May 2006 when I rode up the road from Wufeng to Niuzhuang, first time anybody did that on a bike. Same place as this, obviously.
Sometimes you just need more space for hard disks. I could just mount them in 5.25" drive bays, but they don't have any direct cooling... and it wouldn't be as fun as this.
Three consecutive power cuts in out building were too much to hold for my external hard drive. The catalog got screwed up and, although I've been able to recover almost everything, it was scary as hell.
There is a lesson from this though: you'd better have a 2TB disk to backup your 1TB disk.
Sigh.

My beautyful little macmini 1.5 Ghz Intel Core Solo on top. Iomega 250 GB external harddisk in the middle and LaCie cd/dvd writer on the bottom. Also on the picture a tiny portable Medion 120 GB harddisk.
This Mac mini is about three years old, and I bought a new better and faster MacBook 6 months ago. Still I spend more time on the mini. It´s got soul!

Found this pic on my harddisk. Shot it a couple of years ago in Arco, northern Italy. Still woundering what is under that 2CV exterieur.
Unfortunattely for me, the custom harddrive I built into my macbook has deteriated. Many data is lost and my last backup was about 2 weeks ago. In other words, I lost 2 weeks of research and development.
I had my first Macbook Air back in Febrary. After about two week it had serious harddisk issue and beeped for three times when it got started. I had it with me during a trip back to Taiwan nonetheless-thankfully it could work. It went completely dead after I came back to London. Gladly apple UK offered me the FULL refund!
But I do need an Air to work with. When will they release the new specs?
Ursäkta men jag är aningen sur på mig själv. Har länge tänkt att jag skulle köpa en till hårddisk så att jag hade dubbletter av alla mina bilder... men seg som jag är så har jag inte gjort det.
Så nu självklart har min externa hårddisk gått sönder... men jag hoppas verkligen att jag kan återfå mina filer jag har på disken. Annars lär jag vara deppig ett bra tag till framöver. (forever and ever)
