Wildlife Express Harambe Station, Disney's Animal Kingdom

At Animal Kingdom, we headed straight to Kilimanjaro Safaris, where we hopped in a truck for a guided tour of their Harambe Wildlife Reserve. It was like a mini African safari in the middle of Florida. We saw lots of animals as we drove through the preserve, including hippos

I really enjoy all of the little details at Animal Kingdom. The park is absolutely loaded with them, and they are aged perfectly to look authentic. I would almost say that may favorite part about Animal Kingdom is just being in such a detailed environment. Harambe is amazing, and the textures and colors make everything feel so real and like you really have been transported to a remote village while on Safari.

I also like how they use the attractions in the "advertising." It works well for Disney to get people excited for the attractions, and it works for the guests to continue to sell the story.

Animal Kingdom Safari

Kilimanjaro Safaris is a safari attraction at Disney's Animal Kingdom. It simulates an open-sided safari ride through the savanna of East Africa. The current story is a short photo safari aboard a safari vehicle through the Harambe Wildlife Reserve in Harambe, East Africa. It is 800 square miles (2,100 km2) of natural terrain, including Ituri forest, wetlands of the Safi River valley, and the open bush country of the Serengeti Savanna. African animals on view include real live elephants, giraffes, antelopes, gazelles, crocodiles, monkeys, hippopotamuses, lions, cheetahs, hyenas, african wild dogs, warthogs, ostriches, rhinoceroses, ducks, storks, pelicans, flamingos, wildebeests, okapis and zebras.

The game driver points out animals and provides entertainment. The zebras were removed four months after their arrival due to "acclimation" issues. Some reports claim that the zebras were fighting each other, biting at vehicles or each other, standing in the road, or just causing trouble. They were quickly replaced with addax. Recently, the zebras have been reinstated, and can be viewed during the course of the safari.

This is my new favorite view in Disney's Animal Kingdom (at least, the most photogenic right now). Ever since Harambe expanded to include the Lion King theater, the opposite side of the bridge with the view of Everest provides an at least equally and arguably more attractive vista.

This is a three exposure HDR shot, processed in Photomatix and touched up in Lightroom.

We had the opportunity to be the last ones out of Animal Kingdom after Harambe Nights on Saturday. I managed to set up my tripod and get this lovely view of the Tree of Life before rushing out. What a great view at night. Can't wait to see what Pandora: Land of Avatar brings to the park.

This is where the lions live. Unfortunately, they were mostly asleep as we drove by.

A simple, yet fun detail shot from Disney's Animal Kingdom today as I sign off of Flickr for a while. Nothing too special, but the detail on this sign caught my eye as the sun was setting on us for what was to be my first time ever at DAK at night!

Tomorrow I'm heading out on a new adventure that ends with a preview sailing on board the new Disney Fantasy. This will be my first time sailing with Disney, so I'm excited to see just how they do things on the open sea.

Be sure and hold down the fort while I'm gone!

See ya real soon

Boy, 600mm really lets you zoom in on the details! Getting a close up photo of a rhino on Kilimanjaro Safaris at Disney's Animal Kingdom is pretty difficult. The vehicle is moving and bouncing most of the time, but using the good ol' spray and pray, I came away with a couple of keepers. Spray and pray, for those of you who aren't photographers, is when you hold down the shutter button on burst mode and hope for the best.

I have ridden the Safari countless times, usually the lions are now out, or barely visible. Not this day!!! Thanks for looking and have a great day!

Happy Valentine's Day

The Festival of the Lion King, a short form live stage musical is an original revue-style interpretation of the Disney animated feature The Lion King and has been presented inside an enclosed theater at Animal Kingdom since 1998--initially at Camp Minnie-Mickey, and since 2014 in the newly constructed Harambe Theater in Africa. Presented by Simba and his friends, the show uses music, including the Tim Rice and Elton John penned songs from the film, along with dance, puppetry and visual effects.

I saw this little sign after coming out of one of the Harambe gift shops. And it's a perfect example of all the fine little details seen in Animal Kingdom. I hope to capture many more of these when I take my trip in January. I might actually spend more than half a day there! Thanks for lookin', and have a great day!

One of the things I've found most fascinating about my flickr experience is that fact that, despite hundreds of millions of possibilities at Walt Disney World, the eyes of a small handful of photographers and so often drawn, completely independently, to the same subject. I'm not speaking of the "big" themes - the castle, the fireworks, the parades. I'm talking about some tiny detail, an unusual perspective, an odd composition that two or more people capture, having no knowledge of any other effort. It's extraordinary to me that, having posted only about 100 photos, I find that at least three of them (which, quite honestly, I naively imagined were truly unique) are astoundingly similar to others.

So, a couple of days after taking this shot, I couldn't help but smile to see the beautiful shot by kikifl of a subject I assumed had been overlooked by everyone else! From the dates, it looks as though we both visited the park on the same day at slightly different times - what are the odds?
