Harambe was once part of a colony, but a peaceful revolution made Harambe self-governing in 1961. Today, Harambe is the starting point for tourists and students who want to observe Africa's animals in their natural habitats.

Animal Kingdom Safari
Kilimanjaro Safaris is a safari attraction at Disney's Animal Kingdom. It simulates an open-sided safari ride through the savanna of East Africa. The current story is a short photo safari aboard a safari vehicle through the Harambe Wildlife Reserve in Harambe, East Africa. It is 800 square miles (2,100 km2) of natural terrain, including Ituri forest, wetlands of the Safi River valley, and the open bush country of the Serengeti Savanna. African animals on view include real live elephants, giraffes, antelopes, gazelles, crocodiles, monkeys, hippopotamuses, lions, cheetahs, hyenas, african wild dogs, warthogs, ostriches, rhinoceroses, ducks, storks, pelicans, flamingos, wildebeests, okapis and zebras.
The game driver points out animals and provides entertainment. The zebras were removed four months after their arrival due to "acclimation" issues. Some reports claim that the zebras were fighting each other, biting at vehicles or each other, standing in the road, or just causing trouble. They were quickly replaced with addax. Recently, the zebras have been reinstated, and can be viewed during the course of the safari.
I heard some American tourists saying some pretty culturally ignorant/insensitive stuff while looking at this scene in Animal Kingdom :/

One aspect of Disney parks that I really enjoy is how they "populate" some of the key environments to give them a more authentic and engaging feel. Think the characters of Main Street USA, the Citizens of Hollywood, or in this case, the villagers of Harambe. The Cast Members in these areas add so much to the experience by interacting, and entertaining guests.
On this day, I was enjoying watching a wood worker sitting outside one of the shops in Harambe. I'm sure he is used to having his picture taken often, but I wanted a few candid shots of him working, so I stepped away and used my telephoto lens at 400mm equivalent to get a few shots. After just a couple of frames, I knew "the shot" was going to be when he held the piece out to inspect his work before geting back to carving.
Oh, and, the lens I used for this shot is now only $99! In fact, I wrote about it on the blog the other day. If you shoot micro 4/3, and want to add a telephoto to your bag, this is a deal not to be missed!

One of my favorite things, these market boats right outside of Harambe in Animal Kingdom, really help add to the sense that this is a living breathing town in Africa as it's intended. The paint and cloth on these beauties has faded a bit more over the years, but I believe that helps the theme along. I at first was uneasy about how bright the sun is in this shot and how much contrast it created. Then I noticed that it may help the composition, faded boat in the bright sun, now we know why it's faded. LoL. Please let me know what you all think as any suggestions are welcomed. Enjoy!

Room and flight are booked and the next trip is ON! I'll be at WDW Jan 29-31 solo, leaving for a couple of days and back again Feb 3-7 for a meet-up with Dan Huntley (Fab05) and anyone else who wants to get together.
So if you're going to be around in that time frame, let us know and let's go shoot!

A big hairy ape waits at the edge of the jungle to welcome any intruders into his densely forested realm. He stands with an alert stance and an angry snarl. Next to him, a moss covered tree marks the edge of the forest. While behind him, the dense, vine covered trees recede into the jungle mists.
I originally made this image for a jungle themed digital art contest. The rules of the contest, however, prevented me from publishing it on the web though until it was over. After that, I had forgotten about it until the shooting of the gorilla Harambe at the Cincinatti Zoo made headlines. It brought this to mind. So, I decided to publish it.
To create this image, I used digital art techniques including 3D rendering, digital painting, and digital sculpting.

A Kilimanjaro Safari which departs from the village of Harambe daily for 2 week animal viewing excursions.
Kilimanjaro Safaris, an open-sided safari ride winding through 800 square km of natural terrain, including Ituri forest, wetlands of the Safi River valley and the open bush country of the Serengeti Savanna on the Harambe Wildlife Reserve in the fictional East African town of Harambe, opened in Animal Kingdom's Africa with the park in 1998. According to Disney Legend, Harambe was a Dutch colony until a peaceful revolution in 1963. Throughout the 22-minute ride, a variety of common African animals including elephants, giraffe, antelopes, gazelles, crocodiles, monkeys, hippos, lions, cheetahs, rhinos, zebras, storks, flamingos and okapis can be viewed.
The storm broke just in time for us to capture this idyllic scene at Disney's Animal Kingdom. This made the storm worth it.
Walt Disney World does a good job making new things look old. The "East African Port of Harambe" is the entrance to the African portion of Animal Kingdom, and the Park's many adventures and excursions out among the elephants, rhinos, hippos and more.
It's true that it's not like actually going there, any more than a visit to EPCOT is like visiting Paris or China, but for many Americans and Canadians, it does provide a vision that the world is bigger than the parts we know where we live.
Walt Disney World's Animal Kingdom is also highly involved in education and research, as well as conservation efforts around the world. Good for them; much of what has become WDW was originally wetland and wildlife habitat that was drained, razed, and filled in to build the park, and the outreach into more worldwide conservation efforts needs to be part of their mission.
How awesome that a new land was announced today for the Animal Kingdom based on the AVATAR movie. This announcement surely achieves the vision of the Animal Kingdom to give guests experiences of lands and animals that are both real and real in the imagination.
I found this neat detail near the restrooms along the pathway midway between the Africa and Asia sections. I thought it was the perfect shot to go along with today's big announcement.

Your entrance into Africa is through the friendly, welcoming village of Harambe. Harambe is Swahili for “come together”. Interestingly enough, this village is a combination of a number of some of the favorite places in Africa found by Disney Imagineers whilst on a scouting trip for Animal Kingdom’s Africa. Some of these snippets include a fortress found in Zanzibar and a faux water-stained, crumbling old building and private home that were originally seen in Kenya. The thatched huts found throughout this community were constructed by thirteen Zulu craftspeople from South Africa. The quaint village area was designed to resemble an East African port that caters to tourists prior to their safari excursions (i.e. Kilimanjaro Safari). This bustling port includes a “hotel”, restaurants, an outdoor bar complete with live entertainment and the marketplace. Cast Members/villagers are dressed in colorful, authentic African costumes to add to the atmosphere.
Your Disney safari experience will take you on a journey chasing poachers as you cross the savannah dotted with 34 different species of birds and animals. Following your safari, tour the Pangani Forest Exploration Trail and be entertained by the silverback gorillas. The Wildlife Express steam-powered train cuts through the savannah to Conservation Station where you’ll find an interactive center designed to educate as well as entertain. Points of interest along the train route include the buildings where the animals are kept at night so that they may be checked out medically and fed. The 1.2-mile train ride is wheelchair accessible. Assistive Listening Devices are available for guests who are hearing impaired, check with Guest Services for more information.
As per the village atmosphere of Harambe, there are a number of refreshment/dining establishments. Tusker House Restaurant offers a buffet for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. At Mr. Kamal’s Burger Grill, you can grab a hamburger and beverage for a quick bite. Specialty coffees and delicious baked goods are served at the Kusafiri Coffee Shop & Bakery. Fresh fruit and juices are found at the Harambe Fruit Market. The Tamu Tamu Refreshments stand offers frozen treats and drinks. You can be entertained by live African music as you sit enjoying cocktails and munching on snacks at the “Dawa Bar”.
No village would be complete without its marketplace and shops, and the Mombasa Marketplace/Ziwani Traders” will not disappoint you. Kilimanjaro Safari souvenirs and apparel, T-shirts, hats, gourds, carvings and jewelry, are but a few of the many gifts and souvenirs offered here.
