Beautiful golden hair runs in their family.

These girls are Allegra Champagne (Neo) and Bubbly Bliss (Middie). Bubbly Bliss has been in her box for the past year. I recently saw that a Facebook friend had unboxed hers, and it made me think that I should do the same. Then I noticed that today's theme for the Blythe a Day group is "gold", so I quickly opened her box, washed her hair (it was rather greasy), and posed her with her big sister. Her stock outfit has gold accents, and of course Allegra's gorgeous gown is all gold, so together they are perfect for this theme.

New slightly longer more wavy hair.. It will settle down after a wash... lol

Without fur, mankind would have never survived the glacial ages. In a way, we owe our lives to the existence of the woolly mammoth and other Ice Age mammals. Fur is no longer necessary to survival, yet fur in the modern era has come to represent the very pinnacle of beauty while the methods used to obtain it are anything but.

Please choose to go no fur or faux fur. Of note, even some products marketed as faux fur are in reality from animals. A few ways to tell if fur is real or faux below:

1. Don't go by feel and don't go by color. The new fake fur is actually softer than some real fur. And it can be dyed any color.

2. Look at the tips of the hairs. If the tips taper to a fine point like a cat's whisker or a sewing needle or a a sharpened pencil, it's animal fur. If not, it's probably faux fur (though not necessarily).

3. If you (carefully) burn a couple of hairs of a sample and it smells like human hair, it's real animal fur. Fake fur is made from plastics and will give off a distinct chemical smell when burned.

*All fur pictured is faux and mohair has been obtained free of cruelty

Yep went up into the attic had a minor clear out and found this dress that has been worn before. Its still a little big thankfully unlikr two of the others that i don't stand a chance of getting back into anytime soon.

The colour is more a green and not the blue you see here, For some reason the camera doesn't like this shade of green.

Tried a different look with may hair. it actually looks better in real life.

Change is constant, how we live depends on us.

The length of your recovery is determined by the extent of your injuries. And it's not always successful. No matter how hard we work at it. Some wounds might never fully heal. You might have to adjust to a whole new way of living. Things may have changed too radically to ever go back to what they were. You might not even recognize yourself. It's like you haven't recovered anything at all. You're a whole new person with a whole new life.

In spite of possessing venomous hairs it apparently became victim of an attack by a predator.

You don’t choose facial hair; it chooses you. Sorry to say, not all are worthy. That’s why so many men find growing facial hair about as easy as farming the Sahara. But even if you’re one of the unchosen, not naturally gifted in the way of the beard, the right bit of nous can still help you achieve stubbly glory.

OK designer stubble on a younger man can look fine; as you get older it just looks like you forgot to shave!

The Drone-fly is a very common, medium-sized hoverfly that is an excellent Honeybee mimic. It is one of several species of related hoverfly whose larvae are known as 'rat-tailed maggots' and live in muddy water, feeding on decaying organic matter. Adults feed on nectar in various habitats and can be seen throughout the year, emerging from hibernation to feed on Ivy flowers on milder winter days.

The Drone-fly is one of several related hoverflies that are Honeybee mimics. With a dark-brown body, orange patches on the sides and top, and a covering of orangey hair, it does a good job of looking like a Honeybee. Key differences include the lack of a stinger and 'waist', and only one pair of wings.

Thanks to Insektenflug for pointing it out - fooled me!

Josie seems to be settling in quite nicely in my collection, and is quickly becoming one of my favorite dolls! I love her hair: it's so soft and fluffy and such a vivid shade of red. (And yes, she is named after Josie from the Josie and the Pussycats cartoon. That Josie was a redhead too!)

shot this through lace.

not really sure how i feel about it though

this is an awkward picture to used for my tagged thing but whatever.

i believe i was tagged by two people so here i go;

1. in the winter i want summer, in the summer i want winter.

2. when i say i have an obsession with tights i'm not joking. i have around probably 30 pairs and i can never stop buying them.

3. i don't do anything to my hair. it just naturally... waves? yeah waves like that.

4. i want to travel so bad right now. i just want to get in the car and drive around the country.

5. i'm putting strips of color in my hair this summer.

6. i have rekindled my love for painting my nails! woot.

7. i eat two apples a day usually.

8. i love going grocery shopping.

9. i have a hard time explaining what i want. my mom always asks me what i want to do if i'm so "bored with my life." but i can never explain what i want to do. it's all jumbled in my mind. there are so many things i want to do that i can't say anything.

10. java chip ice-cream is my husband.

Newww doll :3

Why is everyone complaining about her hair ? It's freaking sex hair ! All I needed too do is wash her hair straighten then re-curl. EQUALS, Sex hair [:

Brodi:

Umm, she's very straight forward, she doesn't take maybe as an answer. So it's either yes or no. She tends to be very serious when you meet her, but if you know her more she's like the nicest person you've ever met !

And yeah, she is now my favourite ! Sorry, Harlee :L

All I need now, is a thinning session ! WOOOOOO

She's my faaveee ♥

Simply plop your selected doll on a table, take a pic and have her/him state their name in answer to someone else's doll. (See Dave's photos down below.) This used to be a "thing" many years ago on Flickr, but it has sadly petered out.

This is a Mego Corp Farrah Fawcett doll from 1977. At least her head (and yeah we better not talk about her hair.. it's a touchy subject) but her body is borrowed from a Hasbro Sindy.

About the Cooler... never mind. Too long a story to tell. If you're really curious, there's an album to trudge through.

"The Secret In The Cooler"

A study by scientific experts in Germany suggests people with blonde hair are an endangered species and will become extinct by 2202.

Researchers predict the last truly natural blonde will be born in Finland - the country with the highest proportion of blondes. But they say too few people now carry the gene for blondes to last beyond the next two centuries.

The problem is that blonde hair is caused by a recessive gene. In order for a child to have blonde hair, it must have the gene on both sides of the family in the grandparents' generation.

With the incredibly mixed genes of past and present generations in the Afro-Brazilian population, I think we will always be in for surprises. It is not that unusual to find blondes with blue or green eyes suddenly appearing in an Afro-Brazilian family with darker skinned, chestnut-eyed siblings. This gleaming young girl from the poorest of favelas (shanties) in our region, captured by my lens during our Beija-Flor na Comunidade (Hummingbird in the Community) programme there a few weeks ago, is a prime example of beautiful Brazilian diversity.

„„Hermione let her robes fall and Ron backed into the sink.

Her face was covered in black fur. Her eyes had gone yellow and there were long pointed ears poking through her hair.

‘It was a c-cat hair!’ she howled. ‘M-Millicent Bulstrode m-must have a cat! And the P-Potion isn’t supposed to be used for animal transformations!“

Well… That went sideways, didn’t it? Just another one of those auto-include scenes even though its way more simple than the last ones. Hope you still enjoy it.

That window took me a lot of time, wasn’t easy to replicate the one in the movie. Oh, well, it works.

The awesome brick wall technique is still Thorsten’s invention, so credit goes to him. Thanks to Vaionaut for borrowing me the Catwoman hair that was so fitting for cat Hermione.

This series is obviously heavily inspired by my friend Marcel who did the inspirational undertaking of doing a series of daily builds covering Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone last month. Please follow him as his work is amazing and deserves way more views than it currently has!

Thank you, Marcel, for allowing me to continue what you started. You are indeed a wizard.

A very slight moment of sunshine. No doubt Cindy rushed outside to put the washing out only to bring it back in a few moments later. Been an odd weekend. Woke up grumpy yesterday. Had a bird poop on me while doing a spot of gardening, all in my hair it was, not very nice. Then I smashed my thumb with a club hammer causing a lovely crush wound that won't stitch back together. Still bleeding today. It will be fine and not worth going to A&E for. This all means some of my photos today involve a pained look on my face where I had forgotten about said damage and moved my thumb. Honestly I will be fine

At the end of my walk through the Artist Alley, I came back to the street that leads to the hotel where I was staying.

And just outside the hotel entrance, I spotted this guy quietly sitting at one of the tables -- with his purple bike and his green hair. It seemed like a perfect ending to a day full of color ...

Maybe someday I will be brave enough to dye my hair in a nice vibrant color like this ... but I don't think I'm brave enough to try the nose ring. But who knows? Maybe I just need to live in Rapid City for a few months ....

Note: I chose this as my "photo of the day" for Aug 17, 2015.

********************************

When we first arrived in Rapid City, South Dakota for a family reunion in July 2015, we stayed at the main downtown “Alex Johnson” hotel; and we walked along Sixth Street to dinner that evening with two of our family members. On the way back after dinner, I happened to notice the garish glow of graffiti on a side alley next to the hotel, and I took a couple of quick photos in the twilight, thinking that it might be worth exploring in more detail the next day.

Indeed, I did go back for a quick second look the next morning, but then we had to pack up and check out of the hotel, in order to drive to the rendezvous point near Spearfish (near Deadwood and Sturgis, and in the general vicinity of Mt. Rushmore and the Black Hills) where dozens of members of our extended family were planning to meet us. But when the reunion was over a few days later we drove back to Rapid City, and changed our hotel plans in order to stay at the Alex Johnson for one last night before our early flight back to New York City the next morning.

As a result, I had time for a much more thorough walk-through of the alley and its rich display of art on my final afternoon. I asked the front-desk clerk at the hotel if she knew anything about it, and she pointed me to a young man at the valet parking desk near the front entrance; there I learned that Rapid City is one of only three such spots in the country, where artist-inspired graffiti is not only tolerated, but legally allowed. Here is the website that explains more:

www.visitrapidcity.com/things-to-do/arts-culture/art-alle...

The Website provides much more detail, and in much more cogent form, than I could in these notes; so if you’re curious, I urge you to click on the link. But if you would like to see what the art looks like, in all its vivid colors, take a look at the images in this album.

"Hiya, everyone! It's Chanel, and I'm here to tell you a little...well, A LOT more about myself, haha! First off, notice anything different about me? Like my hair? It's back to its original colour, brown. I dyed it blonde at fourteen and have kept it that colour ever since. As you've probably already guessed, I love vibrant colours and polka dots - can't get enough of them! My favourite form of exercise is cycling, as I just find everything else too boring. I'm an accessory fanatic with over 250 seperate pieces of jewelry, 22 handbags, and don't get me started on the hair accessories! Would it be safe to say I have some where around...um...677 different things? Of course I lose track of all the different styles I own. Whenever I go out, you are bound to see a new hair or head accessory on my head, ahahaha!

I have always loved The Powepuff Girls. My favourite character is Blossom! I looove Cabbage Patch Kids. Since my Mum used to also collect them, you could say she lured me into them as well. Cabbage Patch Kids have been a big part of my life for as long as I can remember, so they're of very sentimental value to me.

Well, you already know the basics - that I'm a model who adores dressing up. My fashion sense is greatly inspired by 60's style clothes.

Hmm, so I guess that's it then? Want to know anything else? Anything at all? Just ask, 'cause I can't think of anything right now, hahaha!

Well, okay then. I guess...thanks for your time. See ya!" xo

Standing beneath this gigantic waterfall was like nothing I had ever experienced. The roar of water above me, the mist swirling around me, the wind pulling at my dress and whipping my hair...it made me feel so small. This place was majestic in every way and I was so fragile in its presence.

A new Iceland blog post will be up in the next few days, so keep an eye out for it! It's going to be epic

uhhhhh guess who’s made the least original calendar man

this guy

I made more Batman villains, once I get all the main villains out of the way I’ll make more jl members. Anyways, onto the figs. I like the catwoman, and surprised no one has used the formula. I really like the firefly and bane, and the calendar man is ok. Same with black mask. The Clayface III is good as well.

From Left to Right: Catwoman, Calendar Man, Bane, Firefly, Black Mask, and Preston Payne.

Formulas

Catwoman: MM Iron Man Hair, WW Head, custom Spoiler torso, Black Widow legs

Calendar Man: Modified JJJ hair (it was a mistake modifying the hair) some Pirates guy head, Calendar Man cape, collar, torso, and legs

Bane: Firefighter breather thingy, venom head, Star Wars armour, CMF legs, and a single handcuff vambrace and WW arm

Firefly: CMF Helmet, A:AoU Iron Sentinel Head, old firefly jet pack, Reversed Batman torso, JL Batman legs

Black Mask: Sakaarian head, Bruce Wayne torso

Preston: Modified Clone Head, Reversed red hood shoulder pads, Star Wars cape, cyclops torso

This tiger butterfly was following me the whole day! On my hands...on my hair...it wouldn't go away! :-)

Stress. Life. And All That We Are.

I have been feeling it lately. Though I have been enjoying many wonderful adventures lately, I have been feeling the stress that tends to build. Almost as much as I love my Kim Time, I love my sports and following my teams (Always Support Your Team) and this weekend I had two of my teams just go "poof" - gone. On one hand this is devastating and on another, this frees up a fair bit of free time. There has been some other things going on too but hey, such is life right? What to do? Well my solution was to put on a black dress and head out to my most favourite lounge. I even stepped up and had a fancy non-alcoholic drink and a lovely dessert. The staff there is super amazing and I had some fun conversations. I was enjoying sharing hair spray tips and the best consignment stores here. Plus, just answering those questions that people have and sharing thoughts. Highlights? Being told that I have such a genuine smile and another customer as she was leaving stopping to share that she loved my hair. It is these little moments that make this all worthwhile. It was just the relaxing time that I needed. My camera does not do night portraits very well but I was able to capture a couple of good ones. Thank you everyone for your continued support of me and I truly hope you are doing great. Stay fabulous! Love - Kim

I was about 35 or so when this photo was taken at Tarheel Lanes in Hendersonville, NC with my then boyfriend, David. I was scorekeeper for the day, since I'm prone to bowl in other people's lanes!

Before I finally cut my hair, it was about 3" shy of hitting my knees. I was sick of weirdos trying to touch it all the time!

The photo was most likely taken by Jason Charles, David's cousin.

I love Suki's hair, it's just amazing color, and makes wonderful effect with the sun light <3

I'm kind of a fetishist, yeah, right. xD

...I know what the people want. And I'm shameless enough to provide the goods sometimes. Looking forward to my new additions soon though. I know someone here who has a predilection for tea parties and small provincial towns will be very interested to see them :) Interesting interaction on the way to work this morning. I was mistaken for a woman as I was crossing the road by an irate driver. That would upset many a man, but he left me in a really good mood! I wasn't trying, it was just, I guess, my hair and colour combination of clothing. I was totally male mode, going to work. The hair, it would seem, is starting to help! I hope to debut that look soon!

Yes it’s TRUE, that’s me in 1992 trying to be Alpha male. Thank goodness I came to my senses.

I weighed in at 220 lbs @100Kg, and would eat up to six meals a day and 4500 calories.

I used to train in the Gym five times a week pushing weights and take protein and weight gain supplements. I reached 18" bicep, 48" chest, 17" neck with a 35" waist. My weights were 350lb Bench, 396lb Squat and 475lb Dead lift.

My face was typical with a big nose, wide jaw and receding hairline, besides the usual beard growth I also had chest, arm and back growth.

I have so far managed to loose over 75lbs in weight and considerable muscle through running and cycling and dietary control. I am now working towards a UK size 10 ~ US size 8.

I also have to thank Hormones and anti androgens for skin tone and body shape, surgery for correcting a lot of the male facial affects of puberty and electrolysis for the battle against the unwanted hair.....it’s been a long road

Still work in progress though....

No, I don't have blue hair... it's because of the expired film...very expired.

Zenit 122 + Kodak Gold 200 Expired

Naturally I wanted to try some photos with my real hair. It wasn't as messy as I thought it would be, especially as I washed it before getting ready and I don't think it was quite dry when I put the wig on ;)

I wonder which look people prefer.

Saturday night cruising in Paprihaven, at the King of Cars dealership.* Today, the customer is being assisted by the Car King himself, Thomas Rudy Jordache!

"This one is really nice. It sits high, I like that."

"That's the Cliff Hanger, Kerri. Your request was a small, sporty, and 'off-roadable' topless. It's bigger than the dune buggy here but still smaller than a full size SUV. That short wheel base will be good in those tight, off road turns."

"What was the dune buggy called again?"

"Meyers Manx. It's a Hot Wheels vehicle so, as you can see, it has a lot of flair. If you want to look sporty, then Meyers Manx has plenty to speed you down the beach with the wind in your hair. It's great in the sand but it won't handle all the off road duties the Cliff Hanger can."

"The Cliff Hanger is more expensive though..."

"Significantly. But it is a Matchbox build so you won't have any worries on dependability and ruggedness. For the extra money you'll get the beach life plus the mountain life, the swamp life, the boulevard life, Market Street life..."

*giggles*

"...and any other place you'd like to cruise."

"Hm. I could just afford the Manx a lot easier."

"Sure, but, going by what you said you wanted to do, I don't want your enjoyment hampered by always second-guessing your decision. I'm willing to make a serious deal with you to make sure that doesn't happen. I want to see you in this Cliff Hanger."

"Can you make a good discount?"

"I'm the owner. I can give it away if I like. I won't quite do that but I'll give you a great price."

"Will you throw in satellite radio?"

"Better than throwing it, I'll have it installed."

"Haha! Okay, let's make a deal!"

TR smiles. From this point it will mainly be looking at her finances and working a monthly payment she's happy with.

Finally unboxed my Water Play Raquelle Doll ❤️ I've been really surprised by her hair, it's just so soft and not glued or sticky at all (I honestly thought it was when I saw the way it was put in the box) I had to give her a Fashionistas body, as her swimsuit body is just awful to pose, so I kind of stole Style 2015 Raquelle's body for now :D (I love this head way more than the original one!!)

My Raquelle is actually a defective one, I chose her cause her eyes where slightly looking to the side, I love dolls with side glance, it really something I find super cute so I had to have this one and not another :D

The Shadow High girls up close. I love the RH line for their many, many details that I can't find in $200 range dolls. But this Shadow High release has simply blown me away. I just have no words. So cool, yet so sophisticated. Seeing what comes with these girls and the care that went into them (including beautiful, distinct manicured nails for each one in grayscale), I find myself questioning the worth of every other doll in my collection.

Shanelle, who I did not plan to buy at first, is my favorite of the trio. She is just ethereal. Super hard to photograph, but stunning from head to toe. That second dress is incredible.

Heather was my first pick from this line and she does not disappoint. I did redo her hair, it was messy out of box. And I flipped the hair extension things. Her crocodile print dress and pants are something else. As is her jacket (not shown here).

Natasha is gorgeous. The second outfit is just dreamy. That faux fur coat with its embroidered stripes? I shudder to think how much other companies would charge for that, LOL.

Super happy with these girls. Thank you, MGA!

It was really warm today. In this weather a bottle of water is your best friend.

I still love Valerie's hair. I never believed it could still be styled in so many ways. This style is one of my favs, it's really cute.

After cutting the rerooted hair I realized I gave her the haircut I've been wanting for months now.

First I thought I'll go safe, right underneath my collarbone to see if I like that, if I don't I should not go any shorter.

So I cut off four inches in June. I like the length, and the plan was to go shorter the month after, but I chickened out. I trimmed my hair in July and August to about half an inch underneath my collarbone.

But after cutting Valerie's hair I got the itch again. I saw her hair was so much easier, but I could still give her lots of styles.

This week I became really fed up with my hair. It was braided, or up in a bun all the time, getting tangled even then. So I thought Friday I will finally cut it off.

So yesterday was cutting day. I almost chickened out again, but then I just got my scissors and cut off 3 inches. Now my hair sits on my collarbone, I'm sure it's still considered long by many people, but I haven't had it this short since I was five.

No regrets I really like it, just like I had no regrets when cutting Valerie's hair.

I'm going to try out this style for myself tomorrow :)

A Light-knot-grass caterpillar has really bright orange hairs - it makes it a very attractive caterpillar!

Here I am, in my own dress (an expensive one that cost over £10!), my own shoes and, to the point of this description, my own hair. It'll be chopped a little bit soon, but here's the full length that I'm currently enjoying over the holidays. This dress is a tight 12, but it's cute, so it'll stay for now. Spots again! The bow is in honour of the season. I like to think I'm someone's perfect package (not fishing for comments at all really!) I hope you all had a great Christmas. I know I did and can't wait for the new year too!

I'm really excited to add Billy to my MH collection. I don't really have any complaints about him besides his hair. It's kanekalon and it was really bad straight out of the box. But I fixed it now though.

His clothes are cute, though very simple. Not quite sure what the big black strap around his chest is supposed to be.

don't even mention the hair it sort of went all wrong after trying to save it lol

So here is the dress without me moving around like some kind of catwalk wanna be.

This dress has caused me so much bother! nothing serious just me making a mountain out of a mole hill. Basically I got this dress the other day and I soooooo wanted to wear it out out that I couldn't decide what to wear for my dance lesson last night, it got to the stage were I almost didn't go dancing just so as I could wear this dress again. OMG what is happening to me all that fuss over a dress

It was time for a new selfie now that I cut my hair. It isn't all that different, just about 6" shorter.

He's missing his signature long hair, but every long hair piece just didn't look right. So, Mr. Fantastic hair it is.

So here are their Make-Overs! They all had bad hair coming out of the box, Cloe and Meygan were the worst. Yasmin was alright. All I did to all three were a good washing on their hair, due to the nasty gel. The flat ironed. I was really shocked when I flat ironed Yasmin and Meygan's hair.. it was really silky and smooth.. while Cloe's was like crap. I thought Cloe would look a lot cuter if I curled her hair, and so I did. ;3

Hope you guys like! :))

The Fiance doesn't like me with long hair. It suggests a combover to her, a style discredited by our current political situation.

Immediately after leaving the salon I noticed all the other Old guys with similar cuts. Perhaps it's more graceful to accept one's age than to ignore it - scroll down a few rows to see me with longer hair.

The Fiance sent me photos of Woody Harrelson in True Detective to suggest what she was looking for.

I leave judgment of how successful THAT attempt was to the viewer.

Cavendish Mews is a smart set of flats in Mayfair where flapper and modern woman, the Honourable Lettice Chetwynd has set up home after coming of age and gaining her allowance. To supplement her already generous allowance, and to break away from dependence upon her family, Lettice has established herself as a society interior designer, so her flat is decorated with a mixture of elegant antique Georgian pieces and modern Art Deco furnishings, using it as a showroom for what she can offer to her well heeled clients.

It is a few days before the wedding of Her Royal Highness, Princess Mary* to Viscount Lascelles at Westminster Abbey, to which both Lettice and her childhood friend Gerald Bruton, have been invited, amongst other friends from their Embassy Club coterie. Gerald, also a member of the aristocracy, has tried to gain some financial independence from his impecunious family by designing gowns from a shop in Grosvenor Street. With some recent good press in Vogue after a wedding gown he designed for his and Lettice’s friend Margot de Virre featured, he has attained some modest success, and a few of his creations will grace female guests at the wedding. This hasn’t stopped him from making a frock of oyster satin with pearl buttons and a guipure lace** Peter Pan collar*** for Lettice to wear to the ceremony and he has just arrived at her Cavendish Mews flat with it in hand to deliver to her in person, only to discover that she is out on an errand.

“Oh Edith, is he still here?” Lettice gasps breathlessly as the front door to her flat is opened by her maid. “It took such an effort to get back here.” She places a slightly clammy glove clad hand on Edith’s shoulder as she tries to catch her breath.

“Mr. Bruton Miss?” Edith asks in surprise at her mistress’ flustered and panting state. When her question is responded to with an affirmative nod, she continues. “He’s only just arrived with your frock for the wedding, Miss. He’s in the drawing room.”

“Oh good!” Lettice sighs, quickly hurrying through the door into the drawing room without even taking off her coat or hat or depositing her parasol into the umbrella stand. “I’ll see him now.”

Edith shakes her head in puzzlement at her mistress as she watches her go, a large pink and white candy striped hat box with a green ribbon trim clutched in her arms along with her snakeskin handbag.

“Thank god you’re still here, Gerald darling!” cries Lettice, bursting into the room and charging across its length. Depositing the large round box on the black japanned coffee table along with her handbag, she drops her stub handled parasol next to her chair. Suitably freed of impediments, she embraces her friend in an enveloping hug of velvet, fur and Habanita****. “Sorry, the traffic getting back was so appalling that I gave up at Bourdon Street and ran the rest of the way!”

“You ran?” Gerald looks surprised at his dear friend. “I thought the daughter of a viscount never ran.”

“Well, they don’t,” she elucidates, shrugging off her velvet and fur coat, casting it across the room where it lands with a crumpled sigh onto a black japanned Chippendale chair. “Unless they are desperate to catch their friend before he leaves.”

“Well, I’m here, aren’t I Lettuce Leaf?”

Lettice slaps him with the velvet toque she has just removed from her head. “You’re a beast, Gerald Bruton!”

“What?” Gerald laughs as he dodges the flapping hat.

“You know perfectly well, what!” Lettuce scolds. “Will you never tire of calling me by my loathed childhood nickname?”

“Not as long as it peeves you, Lettuce Leaf!”

She slaps him kittenishly again. “And if it isn’t a pet peeve any longer?”

“Then you won’t care if I call you Lettuce Leaf or not.”

His response is rewarded with another few wallops from her hat until he finally begs for mercy, as both of them bust into fits of childish giggles.

“So, what is it that you so desperately needed to see me for, darling?” Gerald finally manages to ask.

Tossing the hat on top of her discarded coat, she turns back to Gerald. “This, darling.” she says with a conspiratorial smile as she pats the top of the round cardboard box which is decorated prettily with pink and green ribbons, a scrunch of frothy white lace and an artificial flower.

Gerald looks down at the box, but is singularly unimpressed by it. “A box? What do I care for a box, and more importantly, why do you, darling?”

“Oh it isn’t the box, Gerald. Don’t be dim!” Lettice laughs. “It’s what’s inside.”

“Well show me then!” He uncrosses his arms for a moment to flip his left hand at it dismissively before returning to his bemused stance with arms akimbo. “You have my attention.”

Lettice tears the lid from the box excitedly and delves into a froth of noisy, snowy white tissue paper before withdrawing a beautiful hat of straw – not quite a cloche and not quite a picture hat but something in between – decorated with a lustrous oyster coloured satin ribbon, three white feathers and a rather fetching peach coloured ornamental flower. As she lifts it out, a receipt flutters face down onto the tabletop. Gerald goes to pick it up. “No! No! No!” Lettice says, brushing his hand away before placing the hat neatly over her coiffed blonde Marcelle***** waves. Positioning herself in a rather dramatic, yet elegant pose, she asks, “What do you think, Gerald?”

“I say darling!” Gerald gasps, his hands rising to his mouth where a broad smile appears. “That’s a rather natty looking chapeau!”

“Good enough to go with your frock to Princess Mary’s wedding?”

“I should say so!” Then he pauses for a moment and ponders the cardboard packaging again. “But that isn’t a Madame Gwendolyn hatbox.”

“No, it isn’t,” Lettice replies with a smirk, but says no more as she places the hat on the tabletop next to the hatbox and the receipt, which still lies face down. Gerald quickly reaches again for the latter, but Lettice snatches it up in her own hands before he can reach it. “No! No! No!” she repeats, wagging a finger warningly at her friend.

Gerald looks at the hat again, and then at the mischievous look on Lettice’s pretty face. “Well then? Who made it? You have me intrigued.”

“Well, I’m going to create a fashion first at the royal wedding.” Lettice announces mysteriously.

“It’s a beautiful chapeau darling, but I’d hardly say that it’s a fashion first.”

Lettice holds up a finger to silence him, before then revealing the printed side of the receipt. Gerald’s eyes grow wide as he takes in the typed letters and logo at the top.

“Selfridges? You bought this hat at Selfridges?” he splutters unbelievably. “But it’s so…”

“Stylish?”

“Very à la mode! I can scarcely believe it!”

“Well, not everything Mr. Selfridge has is fit only for shop girls and typists, Gerald, contrary to what you and others may believe. He has some Parisian models exclusively for his department store. And it only cost me nine pounds, nine and sixpence! Can you believe that rogue Madame Gwendolyn was going to charge me nine pounds alone just to refurbish an existing hat of hers that she hasn’t been able to sell with some new ribbons and frou-frou?”

“Well, this is far better value for money, I must say.” Gerald picks up the hat and takes a closer look at the fine stitching around the hatband and how seamlessly the ornamental flower appears to be affixed.

“And that’s how I’m going to create a fashion first at Princess Mary’s wedding!” Lettice claps her hands in delight.

Gerald looks at her perplexed for a moment, then glances at the hat and them back into Lettice’s mirth filled face. His eyes widen again. “Surely… surely not, Lettice! You can’t!” he splutters.

“Why not Gerald?”

“It’s a royal wedding for heaven’s sake! You can’t seriously expect to wear a hat from Selfridges to a royal wedding? You’re the youngest daughter of the Viscount Wrexham!”

“No-one would actually know it was a Selfridges hat, Gerald, except you and me, oh and Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon****** because I alluded to my potential plan when I saw her a few days ago.”

“Oh wonderful!” Gerald throws his hands in the air in despair. “You told one of Her Royal Highness’ bridesmaids!”

“Elizabeth won’t say anything, Gerald.” Lettice assures her friend. “Anyway, she’ll be far too busy on the day with bridesmaids duties to even see my hat, never mind pass remarks on it.”

“And what will Sadie say, when she finds out?”

“She doesn’t need to know any more than anyone else, Gerald. I’m surprised you’d even countenance the idea.” Lettice casts an astonished look at her friend. “I think I’d rather tell Her Royal Highness that it’s a Selfridges hat than tell Mater!”

“Well, she’ going to know it isn’t from Madame Gwendolyn, because it isn’t, and that’s where she gets her hats from, including the one she will be wearing to Westminster Abbey, I’m sure.”

“Oh, I’ll just tell her that I’ve found a fabulous new designer who is more representative of the modern woman.” Lettice remarks offhandedly. “Those last two words will be enough to stop her making further enquiries.”

“Imagine a Selfridges hat at a royal wedding,” chuckles Gerald. “You’ll bring the establishment down yet, Lettice darling, piece by piece, with your modern woman thoughts.”

Contrary to popular belief, fashion at the beginning of the Roaring 20s did not feature the iconic cloche hat as a commonly worn head covering. Although invented by French milliner Caroline Reboux in 1908, the cloche hat did not start to gain popularity until 1922, so in early 1922 when this story is set, picture hats, a hangover from the pre-war years, were still de rigueur in fashionable society. Although nowhere near as wide, heavy, voluminous or as ornate as the hats worn by women between the turn of the Twentieth Century and the Great War, the picture hats of the 1920s were still wide brimmed, although they were generally made of straw or some lightweight fabric and were decorated with a more restrained touch. For somewhere as socially important as Princess Mary’s 1922 wedding, a matching hat, parasol, handbag or reticule and gloves to go with a lady’s chosen frock were essential.

*Mary, Princess Royal and Countess of Harewood (1897 – 1965), was the only daughter of King George V and Queen Mary. She was the sister of Kings Edward VIII and George VI, and aunt of Queen Elizabeth II. She married Viscount Lascelles on the 28th of February 1922 in a ceremony held at Westminster Abbey. The bride was only 24 years old, whilst the groom was 39. There is much conjecture that the marriage was an unhappy one, but their children dispute this and say it was a very happy marriage based upon mutual respect. The wedding was filmed by Pathé News and was the first royal wedding to be featured in fashion magazines, including Vogue.

**Guipure lace is a delicate fabric made by twisting and braiding the threads to craft incredible designs that wows the eye. Guipure lace fabrics distinguish themselves from other types of lace by connecting the designs using bars or subtle plaits instead of setting them on a net.

***A Peter Pan collar is a style of clothing collar, flat in design with rounded corners. It is named after the collar of Maude Adams's costume in her 1905 role as Peter Pan, although similar styles had been worn before this date. Peter Pan collars were particularly fashionable during the 1920s and 1930s.

****Molinard Habanita was launched in 1921. Molinard say that Habanita was the first women’s fragrance to strongly feature vetiver as an ingredient – something hitherto reserved for men, commenting that ‘Habanita’s innovative style was eagerly embraced by the garçonnes – France’s flappers – and soon became Molinard’s runaway success and an icon in the history of French perfume.’ Originally conceived as a scent for cigarettes – inserted via glass rods or to sprinkle from a sachet – women had begun sprinkling themselves with it instead, and Molinard eventually released it as a personal fragrance.

*****Marcelling is a hair styling technique in which hot curling tongs are used to induce a curl into the hair. Its appearance was similar to that of a finger wave but it is created using a different method. Marcelled hair was a popular style for women's hair in the 1920s, often in conjunction with a bob cut. For those women who had longer hair, it was common to tie the hair at the nape of the neck and pin it above the ear with a stylish hair pin or flower. One famous wearer was American entertainer, Josephine Baker.

******Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon as she was known in 1922 went on to become Queen of the United Kingdom and the Dominions from 1936 to 1952 as the wife of King George VI. Whilst still Duke of York, Prince Albert initially proposed to Elizabeth in 1921, but she turned him down, being "afraid never, never again to be free to think, speak and act as I feel I really ought to" She was one of Princess Mary’s eight bridesmaids at her 1922 wedding.

This 1920s upper-class drawing room is different to what you may think at first glance, for it is made up entirely of 1:12 size dollhouse miniatures including items from my own childhood.

Fun things to look for in this tableau include:

Lettice’s elegant Selfridges straw hat sitting on the black japanned coffee table is decorated with an oyster satin ribbon, three feathers and an ornamental flower. The maker for this hat is unknown, but I acquitted it through Doreen Jeffries’ Small Wonders Miniatures in the United Kingdom. 1:12 size miniature hats made to such exacting standards of quality and realism as this one is are often far more expensive than real hats are. When you think that it would sit comfortably on the tip of your index finger, yet it could cost in excess of $150.00 or £100.00, it is an extravagance. American artists seem to have the monopoly on this skill and some of the hats that I have seen or acquired over the years are remarkable.

The beautiful coloured card hatbox came from an online stockist of miniatures on E-Bay, whilst the receipt is a 1:12 miniature receipt, produced to exacting standards by Little Things Dollhouse Miniatures in Lancashire. Lettice’s snakeskin handbag with its golden clasp and chain also comes from Doreen Jeffries’ Small Wonders Miniatures in the United Kingdom.

The black Bakelite and silver telephone is a 1:12 miniature of a model introduced around 1919. It is two centimetres wide and two centimetres high. The receiver can be removed from the cradle, and the curling chord does stretch out.

Next to the telephone stands a glass vase containing blue dried flowers (although you can’t see the flowers in the photo). The vase is made of hand spun glass. These items I have had since I was a teenager when I acquired them from a high street doll and miniatures stockist.

The red elephant to the upper right-hand corner of the photo is actually a glass bead and used to be part of a necklace which fell apart long before I bought it. It and many other elephants from the necklace in red and white glass came in a box of bits I thought would make good miniature editions that I bought at a flea market some fifteen years ago.

Lettice’s drawing room is furnished with beautiful J.B.M. miniatures. The black japanned wooden chair is a Chippendale design and has been upholstered with modern and stylish Art Deco fabric. The mirror backed back japanned china cabinet is Chippendale too. On its glass shelves sit pieces of miniature Limoges porcelain including jugs, teacups and saucers, many of which I have had since I was a child.

To the left of the Chippendale chair stands a blanc de chine Chinese porcelain vase, and next to it, a Chinese screen. The Chinese folding screen I bought at an antiques and junk market when I was about ten. I was with my grandparents and a friend of the family and their three children, who were around my age. They all bought toys to bring home and play with, and I bought a Chinese folding screen to add to my miniatures collection in my curio cabinet at home! It shows you what a unique child I was.

The carpet beneath the furniture is a copy of a popular 1920s style Chinese silk rug. The geometric Art Deco wallpaper is beautiful hand impressed paper given to me by a friend, which inspired the whole “Cavendish Mews – Lettice Chetwynd” series.

For the Hereois who are visiting 'stupid hair'.

In my late 40s I have finally come to terms with my stupid hair. It is very thick and very curly. It will not style. It defies products. It does not go into a nice spiky goth cut. Nor a neat bob. It will not do a neat plait. It escapes from anything that confines it. It has a life of its own, particularly when it is windy. It defies the law of gravity. It obeys the law of natural entropy and reverts to a tangled mess within seconds. If I put a hair bobble in it, I have to cut the bobble out! When cut short it looks great for about 2 weeks then turns into a fuzzy Afro.

I don't wash it (really, it does make it more manageable); some days I can't face brushing it, but always regret that decision.

It is usually up in a comb. Or I look like Cousin It.

(I quite like wigs.......)

I love this picture, but I have to admit that those tacky christmasdecorations (which I thought would be tackier on the picture, with more glitter and stuff! sadly that is not the case) but I HAD to take a last 'all white' picture, just had to. I've just dyed my hair, it's now 'ash blonde' and I have to admit I feel pretty boring...

Don't worry though, it's semi-permanent and it will probably wash out within a month or so ;) I hope so! I just needed a change...

Lots of snow today, well, in the country, not in my place :(
