Osmia bicornis, synonym Osmia rufa, is a species of mason bee, and is known as the red mason bee due to its covering of dense gingery hair. It is a solitary bee that nests in holes or stems and is polylectic, meaning it forages pollen from various different flowering plants. These bees can be seen aggregating together and nests in preexisting hollows, choosing not to excavate their own. These bees are not aggressive; they will only sting if handled very roughly and are safe to be closely observed by children. Females only mate once, usually with closely related males. Further, females can determine the sex ratio of their offspring based on their body size, where larger females will invest more in diploid females eggs than small bees. These bees also have trichromatic colour vision and are important pollinators in agriculture.
On my way to Woodward the other day, I stopped by the lake to see what I could see. I found this great blue heron who was unwilling to move due to the wind. I was closer to it than it wanted me to be. I had to get close enough to capture that bad wind hair! It never flew and I moved on, giving it some space.

Yellow Lady's Slipper, is found across virtually all of the United States and Canada, from Alaska to Georgia. It is a widely variable species, with four varieties and multiple hybrids, making identification and delimitation difficult. It produces a large flower with a pale to dark yellow (and very rarely white) pouch-like labellum, which sometimes has reddish spots on the interior. Green or yellowish sepals and petals twist outwards in spirals. It produces up to five stem leaves; both the stem and leaves are covered in thin hairs. Flowering almonds, blooming near the building, where I live. In my opinion it's one of the most beautiful blooming bushes :)
Flowering almond (Prunus triloba) - this densely branched, shrub or small tree is grown for its beautiful pink blossom which appears from early to mid-spring. Found growing wild in China, it enjoys a sunny position in moist but well-drained soil. The flowers are pale pink or white, and the fruit are red and "pubescent", i.e. with soft hair. It is most often found in cultivation in the double flowered form P. triloba 'Multiplex', which has double pink flowers. The flowering almond is ideal in the garden or near the house. Planted in a row, flowering almonds will create an attractive shrub border along a path, patio or property line. Not only will this rustic plant withstand the toughest of winters but it is also gifted with a resistance to most pests and diseases.

Migdałowiec trójklapowy (Prunus triloba) – gatunek rośliny krzewiastej, należący do rodzaju Prunus. W naturze występuje w Chinach i Korei. Jest rośliną ozdobną – w uprawie oprócz formy krzewiastej występują formy drzewiaste szczepione na podkładce ‘Multiplex’. Kwiaty jasno różowe, osiągają do 3,5 cm średnicy. Zakwita na przełomie kwietnia i maja przed rozwojem liści. Krzewy mają kulistą koronę i wysokość ok. 150 cm. Może być uprawiany na obszarach o łagodnym klimacie, jego kwiaty są bowiem wrażliwe na wiosenne przymrozki. U form szczepionych na pniu często pojawiają się dzikie odrosty, które należy usuwać. Aby obficie kwitnął, należy go sadzić na żyznej glebie i na słonecznym stanowisku. Ze względu na dekoracyjne kwiaty często sadzony w ogrodach lub jako żywopłoty.

Ctenucha virginica is a moth of the family Erebidae. The wingspan ranges from 40–50 millimetres. The wing color varies from black to olive-brown. The body is a metallic blue-green. The head is yellow-orange, with feathery antennae. The caterpillar has multiple tufts of white and yellow hair. It undergoes metamorphosis in May–August.

The reindeer (Rangifer tarandus), also known as the caribou in North America, is found in large herds in the tundra and taiga zones along the tree line of northern Europe, Asia (Siberia) and North America.
It can be characterized by light or dark brown fur, along with a white chest, underbelly, and rump. They have long snouts, short tails, and long legs ending in large even-toed hooves. The reindeer also has a dewlap on its throat covered in white hair. It is the only species of deer in which both males and females possess antlers.
The females usually measure 162–205 cm in length and weigh 80–120 kg. The males (or "bulls") are typically larger (although the extent to which varies in the different subspecies), measuring 180–214 cm in length and usually weighing 159–182 kg.

It could be that I'm somewhere hot and sunny, with a tropical breeze flowing through my hair. It could be that I got this close to a flamingo, close enough to take this picture of one perfect pink plume...
Alas, much as I'd like to escape to the balmy Caribbean for a photo safari, this is a picture of one petal of an exotic and deliciously pink (but definitely non-flamingo) hibiscus flower in my garden...and the breeze is damp, with a touch of winter.

Hair ice, also known as ice wool or frost beard, is a type of ice that forms on dead wood and takes the shape of fine, silky hair. It is somewhat uncommon, and has been reported mostly at latitudes between 45 and 55 °N in broadleaf forests.
The establishment is owned by Mr. JD Russel, a distinguished gentleman with rugged good looks and dark hair. It was rumored that he had once stood alongside the President during the famed charge up San Juan Hill, a tale that added to his allure. Whenever he was not engaged in assisting patrons, he took pleasure in offering a complimentary piece of hard candy from his extensive display.
This day, as I approached the entrance, he could be seen diligently sweeping the walkway. Upon noticing my presence, his face brightened with a warm and cordial smile as he stepped forward to hold the door open. “Good afternoon, Miss MacKenna. A truly splendid day, is it not?” he inquired graciously. I responded with a smile, expressed my thanks, and offered a playful wink. “Indeed, Mr. Russel, it is a most delightful day,” I replied.

I finally have an id for this strange looking caterpillar: Harris’ Three Spot Moth (Harrisimemna trisignata). On its head hairs it carries a former head from a previous molt, which can be used to pummel its assailants. This is one ugly caterpillar!

Also known as the Tire-Poil path (literally pull-hair), it is said to owe this name to the sea wind that almost always blows on the peninsula, ruffing the hair of visitor. At the start of the 20th century, this coastine was inhabited and partly privatised by resisents of villas. now the coastal law has enabled the shores of cap d'Antibes to be won back and reopened to the public.
Thi delicate nature area was purchased by the Conservatoir du littoral (French Coastal Protection Agency) in 2015 and its management was then entrusted to the town of Antibes. Today it is home to a wealth of fragile flora and fauna which deserve our respect.

In 2015, the fungus Exidiopsis effusa was identified as key to the formation of hair ice.
Formation
Hair ice forms on moist, rotting wood from broadleaf trees when temperatures are slightly under 0 °C (32 °F) and the air is humid. Each of the smooth, silky hairs has a diameter of about 0.02 mm and a length of up to 20 centimetres (7.9 in). The hairs are brittle, but take the shape of curls and waves. They can maintain their shape for hours and sometimes days. This long lifetime indicates that something is preventing the small ice crystals from recrystallizing into larger ones, since recrystallization normally occurs very quickly at temperatures near 0 °C.
The hairs appear to root at the mouth of wood rays (never on the bark), and their thickness is similar to the diameter of the wood ray channels. A piece of wood that produces hair ice once may continue to produce it over several years.
In 2015, German and Swiss scientists identified the fungus Exidiopsis effusa as key to the formation of hair ice. The fungus was found on every hair ice sample examined by the researchers, and disabling the fungus with fungicide or hot water prevented hair ice formation.[1] The fungus shapes the ice into fine hairs through an uncertain mechanism and likely stabilizes it by providing a recrystallization inhibitor similar to antifreeze proteins.

Cheveux de glace
Les cheveux de glace, ou chevelure de glace, sont le phénomène d'apparition de glace sous forme de filaments très fins, par temps de gel, à partir de morceaux de bois mort ou d'autre végétaux. Le phénomène est comparable mais distinct des pipkrakes, issues du sol et plus grossières. Les cheveux de glace sont différents du givre par leur apparence comme par leur formation.
Formation
La formation des cheveux de glace se produit dans des conditions météorologiques particulières : par gel modéré et lorsque le sol, très humide, n'est pas encore gelé. Le phénomène est rare et s'observe plutôt dans les sites ombragés et tôt le matin.
Les cheveux de glace apparaissent sur des végétaux particuliers, comme le bois mort de hêtre ou de chêne. Leur observation donne à penser que l'eau contenue dans le bois est expulsée à travers les pores du bois par son expansion à l'approche du point de congélation, et gèle sous forme de fils très fin au contact de l'air. Le mécanisme pourrait néanmoins être plus complexe et être lié à la présence de champignons sur ces bois en décomposition; en 2015, le champignon Exidiopsis effusa (en) a été identifié comme essentiel à ce mécanisme. La poussée de ces fils de glace peut avoir une force suffisante pour repousser l'écorce d'un bois mort. La formation est très fragile, elle se détruit au toucher ou au souffle et disparait naturellement par fonte ou sublimation si elle est exposée au soleil.
Historique
En 1918 Alfred Wegener évoque que le mycélium sur le bois en décomposition contribue au phénomène. En 2014, Christian Mäztler, physicien de l’université de Berne associé à Diana Hofmann, chimiste et Gisela Preuss, biologiste ont élucidé le mystère de leur formation.

Haareis, manchmal auch Eiswolle genannt, besteht aus feinen Eisnadeln, die sich bei geeigneten Bedingungen auf morschem und feuchtem Totholz bilden können. Anders als Hydrometeore (zum Beispiel Raureifkristalle) entsteht Haareis aus dem im Holz enthaltenen Wasser, nicht aus Luftfeuchtigkeit.
Ähnlich aussehende und häufig nicht genau unterschiedene Phänomene sind Bandeis (engl. ice ribbons, ice flowers) an Pflanzenstängeln und Kammeis (engl. needle ice) am Boden, die beide jedoch anders gebildet werden.
Entstehung
Wissenschaftlich ist die Entstehung des nur selten zu beobachtenden Haareises noch wenig erforscht. 1918 beschrieb der Meteorologe Alfred Wegener Haareis auf nassem Totholz. Er vermutete einen „schimmelartigen Pilz“ als Auslöser, was jedoch von anderen Wissenschaftlern angezweifelt wurde, die rein physikalische Prozesse wie bei der Entstehung von Kammeis als Ursache annahmen.
Eine biophysikalische Studie von Gerhart Wagner und Christian Mätzler bestätigte 2008 Wegeners Vermutung weitgehend. Demnach wird Haareis durch das Myzel winteraktiver Pilze (u. a. Schlauch- und Ständerpilze) ausgelöst, deren aerober Stoffwechsel (Dissimilation) Gase produziert, die das im Holz vorhandene leicht unterkühlte Wasser an die Oberfläche verdrängen. Dort gefriert es und wird durch nachdrängende, beim Austritt aus dem Holz ebenfalls gefrierende Flüssigkeit weitergeschoben. Dies geschieht ausschließlich bei Temperaturen knapp unter dem Gefrierpunkt, wenn das Wasser im Holz noch nicht gefroren ist, es an der geringfügig kälteren Umgebungsluft jedoch gefriert. Eine Randbedingung für die Haareisbildung ist außerdem hohe Luftfeuchtigkeit: Wenn die Luft nicht mit Wasserdampf gesättigt ist, sublimieren die feinen Eiskristalle kurz nach ihrer Bildung an der Holzoberfläche, so dass keine langen Haareiskristalle entstehen können. Eine Reproduktion von Haareis ist in Versuchen solange möglich, wie das Pilzmyzel im Holzkörper nicht abgetötet wird.

Photographing the cranes and geese from the north-south walking path is aided by the east rising morning sun on your back as you photograph to the west. On the other side of the path there is no such easy shot… but here is a Say’s Phoebe flitting about grabbing insects out of the sky not 20 yards (18.3 m) away. She lands on a branch and I turn to shoot… the low sun is blazing directly into my eyes and the lens as I hopefully get the -EV (or should it be +EV) right and focus. I can’t see the tracking box or eye box; I hope for the best… It takes five full minutes for me to get my sight returned trying to shoot cranes in the opposite direction… oh, woe’s me! First World problems!! (PS: that’s not a hair; it’s part of breakfast)

Flowering almond (Prunus triloba) - this densely branched, shrub or small tree is grown for its beautiful pink blossom which appears from early to mid-spring. Found growing wild in China, it enjoys a sunny position in moist but well-drained soil. The flowers are pale pink or white, and the fruit are red and "pubescent", i.e. with soft hair. It is most often found in cultivation in the double flowered form P. triloba 'Multiplex', which has double pink flowers. The flowering almond is ideal in the garden or near the house. Planted in a row, flowering almonds will create an attractive shrub border along a path, patio or property line. Not only will this rustic plant withstand the toughest of winters but it is also gifted with a resistance to most pests and diseases.

Migdałowiec trójklapowy (Prunus triloba) – gatunek rośliny krzewiastej, należący do rodzaju Prunus. W naturze występuje w Chinach i Korei. Jest rośliną ozdobną – w uprawie oprócz formy krzewiastej występują formy drzewiaste szczepione na podkładce ‘Multiplex’. Kwiaty jasno różowe, osiągają do 3,5 cm średnicy. Zakwita na przełomie kwietnia i maja przed rozwojem liści. Krzewy mają kulistą koronę i wysokość ok. 150 cm. Może być uprawiany na obszarach o łagodnym klimacie, jego kwiaty są bowiem wrażliwe na wiosenne przymrozki. U form szczepionych na pniu często pojawiają się dzikie odrosty, które należy usuwać. Aby obficie kwitnął, należy go sadzić na żyznej glebie i na słonecznym stanowisku. Ze względu na dekoracyjne kwiaty często sadzony w ogrodach lub jako żywopłoty.
