由於大阪地狹人稠，為了興建機場，得以填海技術與海爭地，打造出一座人工島嶼。「關西國際機場」是日本第二大國際機場，與日本本島透過「關西國際機場聯絡橋」以公路與鐵路完成旅客輸運，機場建有一條3500米長的跑道，主候機樓長達1.5公里，採用玻璃和金屬的高科技派風格，蔚為壯觀，造價120億美元。

關西機場是日本第一個24小時營運的機場，美國土木工程師協會甚至稱其為「新世紀的豐碑」。

待2007年8月完成第二條8000公尺的跑到後，面積將擴大到1300公頃
