Černá Hora (meaning Black Mountain) - 1299 m above sea level - mountain in Czech Republic in the eastern part of the Karkonosze Mountains, located in the area of the Karkonosze National Park, next to the spa town Janské Lázně. On the south-eastern slope there is a ski resort, which includes a gondola lift that can takes you to the top. On the top of the mountain there is a TV transmitter and an iron observation tower with a panorama of the Karkonosze Mountains.

Na południowo-wschodnim zboczu położony jest ośrodek narciarski, w którego skład wchodzi kolej gondolowa, którą można dojechać na górę z miejscowości Jańskie Łaźnie. Na szczycie góry znajduje się nadajnik telewizyjny oraz żelazna wieża widokowa z panoramą na Karkonosze.

Towards the end of my vacation to Newfoundland, I went on the Irish Loop, which goes along the coast of the Avalon Peninsula in Newfoundland. It is a wonderful drive in itself with points of interest that touch on archaeology, paleontology, lighthouses, lichen covered tundra (and potentially caribou), whales, birds, and culture.
Near the south tip of the peninsula, there is a location where small fish congregate quite close to shore. And so do the whales. It is a popular spot for tourists to go whale watching. Even the locals get into it.
Where there are fish, there are usually a few seabirds around, too. The one pictured here is a northern gannet. They will fly over the water, scouting for prey fish. Once a fish is spotted, they immediately slow up (note that the feet are deployed to help with losing speed) and change their angle of flight, starting into a steep dive with wings out but folded into a triangle shape so they can still correct direction if needed. Right before they hit the water, they will tuck in their wings fully and plunge below the surface to grab a fish in their beak. Gannets most often eat their prey while still under water. That prevents other birds stealing their catch.

A shame there wasn't more opportunities this weekend for Sussex's annual Hot Air Balloon Festival with all the clouds and rain this weekend. Fortunately the sky cleared up for the evening so they were able to at least do one launching.
Horned Grebe focused on an American Coot to make sure it knows that this territory belongs to Grebes. Shortly after this photo the Grebes dived and moments after being underneath the water the American Coot scurried away to the other end of the pond. Once the waves settled it was apparent the Grebe strategically poked the Coot from beneath the water surface.
