Day 53, Year 3
Shalene's birthday today so we went out to lunch. We found a seafood restaurant online with sea views, as requested, at Manly, a 20 minute drive from home.
The restaurant, Wilson's Boat Shed, was great. We ordered this huge seafood tray (though "skip" might be a better term) and proceeded to munch our way through members of the crustacean, mollusc, cephalopod and piscine families. I think there were two types of crab and four whole Moreton Bay Bugs. What gluttons we were.
No dinner tonight.

Generally speaking, my photos of birds on the feeders at RSPB Lochwinnoch are my most despised on this website, the algorithm that decides "interestingness" seems to hate them. Which is nice.
Wolverines are considered ruthless killers as they don't always kill their prey instantly but instead paralyze it by biting it in the spine. In the winter the wolverine may kill several reindeer in quick succession. This is typical for weasels as they kill animals for storage. The wolverine then returns to the carcass, just like the bear. It rips off the prey animal's neck tendons and rarely leaves any claw marks on the animal. The wolverine also often detaches the prey animal's head.
In Northern Finland where reindeer husbandry is practiced wolverines are unfortunately persecuted, regardless of their low numbers. Even though they are critically endangered poaching of this beautiful carnivore (and other large carnivores of Finland) is not uncommon there. Also, as unreasonable as it is, Finland's Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry allows, and sets permits for wolverine hunting. Hunting of wolverines is outrageous and short sighted as there would be non-lethal methods available. The small population should be preserved, not hated and killed, as wolverines are an important part of the ecosystem and nature.
As per 2018 Finland paid 2700 euros or more per large predator (wolverine, wolf, lynx, bear) killed reindeer to the reindeer herder. For a single reindeer that herder sold for meat, he got around 500 euros. I am sure those numbers are higher today, but I wasn't able to find any reliable sources for that information. For this reason, some herders are known to buy reindeer calves, or use some of their adult reindeer, and intentionally leave them for the predators to kill. However, most of the Sami herders are honest and follow the law.
I photographed this hungry, salivating wolverine during early morning hours in Eastern Finland, by Russian border. He found some meat left for him as a bait in front of our photography hide.
During this trip, I was also informed that wolverines had recently been poisoned by the haters in the area. Such a beautiful animal doing what he is meant to do...be a wolverine. Sadly, there is less and less human kindness in this world.

It is a stocky and muscular carnivore, more closely resembling a small bear than other mustelids. The wolverine has a reputation for ferocity and strength out of proportion to its size, with the documented ability to kill prey many times its size. The wolverine can be found primarily in remote reaches of the Northern boreal forests and subarctic and alpine tundra of the Northern hemisphere, with the greatest numbers in the U.S. state of Alaska, northern Canada, the Nordic countries of Europe, and throughout western Russia and Siberia. Their populations have experienced a steady decline since the 19th century in the face of trapping, range reduction and habitat fragmentation, such that they are essentially absent in the southern end of their European range. Makansutra Glutton Bay at the Esplanade was supposed to be the gathering of Singapore's best street food so I made a point to visit the place while my friends went to see the Phantom of the Opera. As I was alone, I couldn't eat much, just this. It's supposed to be from the famous stall in Orchard Road. Well, generous servings of mussels and eggs, but I think they overdid the starch. It got a bit too bland and heavy half way through.
Puki is sweet and caring and a little bit of a glutton. ^__^; She likes pinks and ribbons and loves her best friend (Byul!) Her personality is a bit younger than the rest of the Dals, and some of them sometimes thinks she's a little weird at times. ^__^;
But she's always happy and you can count her for help! ;D
She looks a little glassy eyed here. but I think that kinda adds to her clueless-ness sometimes. ^__^;

The TEDxUWLaCrosse Salon Series, presented Glutton for Punishment: The Environmental Costs of Western Diets at the UW-La Crosse Institute for Campus Excellence, Murphy Library, on Tuesday, March 8, from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. The event opened with a presentation and group discussion facilitated by Dr. Adam Driscoll, assistant professor - Department of Sociology.
At a TEDx salon, attendees watch TED Talks, listen to speakers, and have discussions about the talks they witnessed. Salons re-engage the audience in the presentation model through the critical element of lively discussions, allowing attendees to actively participate in the event and shape the conversation.
Dr. Driscoll summarizes his presentation, “This salon explored the nature of the global food system and how current agricultural and food industry practices are unsustainable in both an ecological and a distributive sense.” The salon also included TED videos by Tristram Stuart and Dan Barber. Driscoll continues, “Themes we explored included the amount of food being wasted by our current system, the ecological footprint associated with Western diets, issues of food justice, and problems with agricultural illiteracy. We finished with a discussion of possible alternative models to the current food system that exist at both the local and global levels. We discussed how we as individuals can help foster environmentally sustainable food systems that provide healthy, affordable food for all”

a vegan i am not!
this is my delicious reward for churning out that portfolio for Work Worth Doing.... a drink full of strawberries, a little peach yogurt (not so much since I ended up eating it all before I found time to make the drink), cottage cheese (my secret weapon), french vanilla ice cream and soy milk.... and if that wasn't enough dairy, why not a bowl of mint chocolate chip ice cream too!
ah... and i'm going for korean bbq w/ the fam in 30 minutes.
