Shot for Week 29 of my "52 Weeks of 2023" flickr group project given the theme "Seven Deadly Sins".
I chose this image because the bee seems to be gorging itself on all the pollen it could find, which represents Gluttony, one of the seven deadly sins. I recognize this gluttony is important for its role as a pollinator, hence the title Precious Glutton.

Little glutton
It takes a certain amount of patience to take this type of photo, apparently I have more than I thought.
The sharpness could be better but you have to be quick and not shake.

From a viewpoint close to Wheeldon Trees and looking towards Glutton Dale the sun finally burst through the clouds to light up the fields below as squally showers blew all around me. High Wheeldon is the summit to the left of the image.
This was a weekend for indoor fun. I actually woke up to this and immediately grabbed my camera... :)

Винный бражник или средний винный бражник (Deilephila elpenor) — это удивительная бабочка из семейства бражников (Sphingidae), похожая на птицу колибри. Она словно порхает над цветами, быстро порхая своими крыльями. Расцветка бражника настолько необычна, фантазийна, что сразу угадать, какое перед вами насекомое, бывает сложно.Винный бражник ведет вечерний образ жизни и является прекрасным опылителем для многих растений. С вечера до полуночи насекомое перелетает с цветка на цветок и пьет сладкий нектар. При этом бабочка, словно колибри, может передвигаться вертикально вверх и вниз, а также зависать на одном месте, чтобы напиться цветочного сока. Интересна окраска гусеницы винного бражника. На четвертом и пятом сегментах ее тела расположены крупные красновато-фиолетовые пятна, которые словно имитируют «очки» всем известной кобры. А сама гусеница напоминает маленькую, но страшненькую змею.
Сходство с коброй увеличивается, когда бражник в минуты опасности втягивает первые три сегмента вместе с головой в крупный четвертый и пятый.
В итоге получается надутая голова с пугающими глазами, которая отпугивает хищников и непрошенных гостей восвояси. Гусеницы бражника, в отличие от бабочек, употребляют в пищу нежную молодую листву и сочные части травянистых растений.
Больше всего им нравятся цветы и завязи иван-чая и подмаренника. В редких случаях гусеница может перекусить виноградными листьями.
Деревья и кустарники легко переносят нашествие бражника и после него быстро восстанавливаются.
Есть у бражника и положительная сторона: если он поселился на сорняках, то помогает справиться с ними без прополки.

She seems to be fluttering over the flowers, flapping her wings rapidly. The color of the hawk moth is so unusual, fantastic, that it can be difficult to immediately guess which insect is in front of you. The wine hawk moth leads an evening lifestyle and is an excellent pollinator of many plants. From evening to midnight, the insect flies from flower to flower and drinks sweet nectar. At the same time, a butterfly, like a hummingbird, can move vertically up and down, as well as hang in one place to drink flower juice.The color of the caterpillar of the wine hawk moth is interesting. On the fourth and fifth segments of her body there are large reddish-purple spots that seem to imitate the "glasses" of the well-known cobra. And the caterpillar itself resembles a small, but ugly snake.
The similarity with the cobra increases when the hawk moth in moments of danger draws the first three segments together with the head into a large fourth and fifth.
The result is an inflated head with frightening eyes, which scares away predators and uninvited guests back home. Hawk moth caterpillars, unlike butterflies, eat tender young foliage and juicy parts of herbaceous plants.
Most of all they like flowers and ovaries of willow-tea and bedstraw. In rare cases, the caterpillar can snack on grape leaves.
Trees and shrubs easily tolerate the invasion of hawk moth and recover quickly after it.
The hawk moth also has a positive side: if it has settled on weeds, it helps to cope with them without weeding.

The numerous Mourning Doves are real gluttons at the backyard feeders so it is nice that they earn their keep with a striking pose now and then.
