"The Ghosts of my life,
Blow wilder, than before...."
Japan, 1982 (in case you were wondering...)
I have looked out on this particular view on what must be hundreds of morning dog walks, and photographed it many, many times, and yet each time it looks both different and yet the same...
I originally thought "Ghosts" when I saw how the mist transforms the landscape into more and more indistinct, "ghostly" outlines as distance increases - an effect well known to photographers and painters, "aerial perspective".
This triggered more "cranial wanderings" about all the times I have stood in this exact same spot looking at this exact same view, and yet how different each day looks. AND how different the experience - different weather, different light, different dogs, different people - the same, but not the same.
When I look at this view, I don't only see what there is to simply see, but also all the recalled experiences from the past too - the photograph itself is just a collection of pixels, it is the mind and imagination that assigns the meaning, based not just on aesthetic values, but also on personal experience - I tend to photograph not just what I love to look at in a photograph, but what I actually love, as I suspect is the case with most people.
Thus, I see not only what I photographed, but the "ghosts" of my own experiences, all of which is part of the idea of "capturing a beautiful moment forever".
Not only my own photographs of course are like this - I know when I look at another photographers "pixels" I am able to assign not just values of an aesthetic nature to the image, but also draw upon my own experience and imagination to truly experience and "identify" with some part of the experience expressed by the photographer.
And thus we not only express aesthetic values in our images, but also our common experiences and values - a shared love of what we see, feel and experience.
The eastbound Chief dashes past the remains of Colmor, NM. With severely reduced ridership due to the global pandemic this train is somewhat of a ghost of its usual self, but it's still more lively than this ghost town on the high plains.
I photographed this ghosts installation at some house in our neighborhood, then I got the idea to "move" it to the creepy woods to make it a Halloween scene :))
Square Trees Series
Covehithe, Suffolk, England, UK
"I was much further out than you thought. And not waving but drowning."
- Stevie Smith (1972)
The Suffolk coastline on the east of England has some of the worst coastal erosion in Europe. The tiny village of Covehithe has almost been lost to the North Sea, and visitors now come to see the ruins and the crumbling cliffs. Local farmers are losing fields and woodland. When trees topple off the cliff there begins a slow, inexorable surrender to the sea. The waves and sand strip the trees bare, and they take on a smooth aesthetic. At spring tide, the surf comes up to the cliffs and the bones of the trees take on the look of ghostly apparitions clawing for help; not waving, but drowning.
Outside, beneath the rusting tracks, the city murmurs in forgotten echoes. Graffiti tells stories no one reads, while the stairs climb toward the lost train above. The air still hums with the ghosts of movement.

Interesting pattern of ghostly lights as a vehicle passed while I was taking this shot, looking across the road to the Saltwater chip shop on Bruntsfield Place. Another improvised night shot - sat the camera on a handy traffic bollard with the timer running for a long exposure, and got this
Barn owl over the Essex fields just before harvest time. (This particular image was recently featured in Amateur Photographer at amateurphotographer.co.uk)

There is a lady on the left side of the picture. She was dressed like an old homesteader. I quickly tried to shoot the picture before she came into frame, but I never succeeded.
Ezekiel 35:4 “I’m going to turn your cities into ghost towns, and you will become a ruin. Then you will learn that I am the LORD.”
This livin' marshmallow's name is Ghost. He's awesome to work with, even though he's a handful! People breed these in captivity for their fur (which is how this one got rescued) and also for pets. As much as he is a joy to help care for, I can honestly say that he would not make a good pet! Imagine an animal with the worst qualities of both a cat and a dog, and you've got an idea of what a fox is like! They quick, agile, excellent jumpers, intelligent, make a huge mess, mark their territory constantly, get riled up easily, don't get along with house pets, smell bad, and like to eat rodents. On top of that, they do not trust people easily. In fact, I've read that a fox will never trust a person who works with reptiles, which would explain A LOT lol.
Luckily, this guy has a good home at a nature center where he gets the proper care he needs. He also has an important job as an education animal!
Morant's Curve with a train passing through during a 10 stop exposure during the day. A winter visit to this spot is on the cards some day I hope!
Bannack, Montana Ghost town
Founded in 1862 and named after the local Bannock natives, Bannack was the site of a major gold discovery in 1862, and served as the capital of Montana Territory briefly in 1864, until the capital was moved to Virginia City. Bannack continued as a mining town, though with a dwindling population. The last residents left in the 1970s.
At its peak, Bannack had a population of about ten thousand. Extremely remote, it was connected to the rest of the world only by the Montana Trail. There were three hotels, three bakeries, three blacksmith shops, two stables, two meat markets, a grocery store, a restaurant, a brewery, a billiard hall, and four saloons. Though all of the businesses were built of logs, some had decorative false fronts.

As seen from a ridge above Lake Superior..the day's weather was a blend of bright blue skies, fog, thunder, and rain.. sometimes simultaneously. I made this image just before a huge band of clouds burst open.
nice to get a picture of the male northern harrier as they were easily being outnumbered about 10 -1
Ive managed to catch 1 train on the Moffat in what feels like a decade of visits. This RR is a ghost, long past its prime when SD40T-2s roamed the desert.
You can't ask for a better end of the day than a truly white Barn Owl. Terrible light so a high ISO but still, wow what a fabulous bird....truly magical. :)

There are two ghosts. They're the same man.
This scene is only a bit over a minute. He just couldn't wait and kept throwing the fishing line here and there. And eventually disappeared onto the jetty. I don't think he caught any fish.
Yes it's my lethal lady Ghost again in a more sophisticated look and environment.
I've been playing around with lighting effect and such, thus there will be alot more of Ghost in different lighting. Why? Because Ghost is officially my favorite sim and because I need to practice with photoshop.
BTW Ghost will be having her own series...soon I hope. Whenever my BF decides to send back and his video card so it can be replaced. But he rather wait till his WoW expires before he does anything....grrrrr, stupid WoW AND stupid BF.
FYI: Yes that is a sci-fi city in the window frame. I like it because it reminds me of "Blade Runner" which is sorta the same world that Ghost resides. That kinda dark and grimy futuristic world. If you haven't seen Blade Runner you so should...it has Harrison Ford in it!
