Kids are very busy these days in Dublin, going around and trying to collect as much stuff as possible to be burnt on the Halloween bonfires.

Dragging three kids around snow covered roads on a sledge is bloody good exercise, I have thighs like tree trunks now. Nice of them to pelt me with snowballs all the while, I thought.

My good friend Jyoteen lent me his 85 f/1.2 L and 70-200 f/2.8 L IS, for a week...this could get expensive!

Meet Beggy-boogoo (my kids' name for any and all bugs--and apparently they like french toast). This little bugger (ha) I found chilling out on a pepper plant in my MIL's vegetable plot. I suppose I should have moved him, but he looked so cool that I took a few pictures and forgot that he was technically the bad guy. Plus this guy was enormous, which made him cooler...he had certainly been taking more than his fair share of my MIL's open salad bar. I'm usually not one to get close up with bugs, and to be honest this picture makes me slightly squeamish, but I am fascinated with the defense 'eyes' and it's mouth. Multiple pincers for teeth? Pretty awesome/freaky.

My Push from Broken Glass Mosiacs was to take a self-portrait or to take a photo of something in motion with the background blurred or the subject blurred. I think I have now taken a zillion pictures of myself. Glad it's not on film. Usually I am just glad to be behind the camera so I don't have to analyze every wrinkle when I finally see the photo. This time I used the time-honored technique of holding the camera off to the side and clicking. I always look too serious, but the arm out-to-the-side method is awkward. Even forgot to comb my hair this morning. No one noticed. Do I look like a librarian?

If I were to take a photo of something moving - well, I can't take photos of my students without their permission unless they are unrecognizable. Let's just leave it as - the opportunity to take pictures of runners, joggers, and speeding motorcycles is not likely to happen on my road. I did capture a speeding car, but not much of it. The birds were all gone before the camera, or photographer, was ready. This was a hard push since I don't usually think about taking my own picture. Thanks Sheri. §;¬)

JOHNSTON – It’s no small wonder that the importance of being proficient in literacy has taken center stage in Iowa’s schools. The emphasis on third grade literacy isn’t random: it’s a time when students begin reading to learn, as opposed to simply learning to read.

Perhaps more important is that studies show if students are weak in literacy by the fourth grade, they stand a much greater chance of doing poorly throughout their educational career, including possibly dropping out of school in later years.

As districts work to improve literacy rates, one need look no further than Johnston Community School District as a model. . Take a school there – any school – and you will find solid practices at work. Indeed, nearly 90 percent of the district’s students are proficient in literacy. And the all-important third graders? An impressive 90.1 percent, which compares to the statewide proficiency rate of 76.8 percent.

lola and elliott are pierre and gaelle's kids. they are smart and sweet, they have large reserves of energy, and they're completely bilingual. (in this video you can hear lola switching back and forth between english and what todd calls her 'gibberish.')

apparently one of the things lola and elliott liked about living in the u.s. was the way that adults interact with kids. american adults let kids con them into playing with light sabers.
