I spotted this Tortoise and his Human Pal taking an ocean-front walk along the cliffs of Palos Verdes California. One thing about California, you will usually find something interesting or unusual, even when you're not looking for it : )
The Tortoise:
Tortoises are "cold-blooded," meaning their body temperature varies with the surrounding environment. They are also herbivores, meaning they eat plants. Tortoises are found in a variety of habitats, including deserts, forests, grasslands, and swamps.
There are over 300 species of tortoises, and they come in a wide range of sizes. The smallest tortoise is the speckled padloper tortoise, which is only about 4 inches long. The largest tortoise is the Galapagos tortoise, which can grow to be over 150 pounds.
Tortoises are long-lived animals. Some species can live for over 100 years. The oldest known tortoise is a Galapagos tortoise named Jonathan, who is over 190 years old.

Out of range of my lens, there was a large raft of Northern Shovelers. Nearly all of the males, either solitary or in pairs with hens, had the characteristic green head.
This pair shows a drake (the one behind with the black bill) in so-called "eclipse plumage", meaning non-mating. However, by looking at the picture in largest size, traces of the green can be seen among the dark gray/black. So, he is either "on the way", too old/young, or has completed mating. Whatever the reason, he is out of sync with the rest of the flock, which may be why this pair was separated from the rest.
Taken across from the Flying J truckstop in Willard Utah. The Wasatch Range is right and out of sight the Great Salt Lake and Willard Bay are about a half mile to the left. A light snow over night left everything white topped.

This image is the result of many years of trying and thinking about how to get the best results in single images of the Milky Way. For a long time I was planning to shoot a single exposure with these parameters of ISO 200, exposure time of 8 minutes. Here is an effect that will surprise many lovers of Milky Way photos. It turns out that with a suburban sky that is not too dark, you can basically deny the existing canons of photography.
My sandwich mysteriously disappeared from the picnic table. I asked this guy if I could frisk him and he complied but I think that bulbous stomach and crop is where the truth lies. With that said he is an adorable thief.
I take a lot of photos and not all of them go up up Flickr. I try to pick what I consider "quality" photos for posting. But, because I take so many photos, sometimes a photo falls through the cracks. This one is from last year; no idea why I didn't post it.
