My son came home from the hospital today after getting his appendix out. Some neighbors were right neighborly and brought over a get-well brownie.

The gentle Yakima River winds through massive basalt cliffs and rolling desert hills for 27 miles. The canyon offers excellent wildlife watching, plant viewing, fishing in a Blue Ribbon trout stream, family-friendly rafting and camping. The BLM manages over 9,000 acres in the Yakima River Canyon area, including four developed river access sites: Umtanum (a footbridge at the site provides the only pedestrian access to the west side of the river within the Yakima River Canyon), Lmuma Creek, Big Pines, and Roza (the main take out for all river floaters due to the Roza dam a half mile downstream of the site.)
Know Before You Go:
-The recreation sites are open YEAR ROUND.
-There are overnight ($15/site) and day-use ($5/vehicle) fees.
-Reservations for campsites may be made at recreation.gov from May 15 to September 15.
-The Umtanum Recreation Site contains six RV/tent campsites.
-Lmuma Creek contains seven RV/tent campsites.
-Big Pines contains 41 (38 RV and three walk in only) campsites.
-Roza contains six RV/tent campsites.
-Roza also has a concrete boat launch to accommodate motorized boat users for use downstream of the boat launch.
-Amenities at all four sites include: picnic tables and fire rings, vault toilets, a river put-in/take-out site and garbage collection.
-Hookups and potable water are not provided at any site.
-Cellular phone coverage is limited in many areas of the Yakima River Canyon.
Directions: From Ellensburg, Washington, take Hwy 821 (Canyon Road) south into the Yakima River Canyon. Umtanum is located at milepost 16, Lmuma Creek is located at milepost 12, Big Pines is located at milepost 10 and Roza is located at milepost 7, a half mile above Roza dam and about 25 miles south of Ellensburg.
Point of Interest: Located just south of Ellensburg, the non-motorized trails at Ringer Road offer visitors glimpses of the wildlife and birds that inhabit the riparian areas next to the Yakima River.

Les Gets is a small, friendly resort that offers a good mix of slopes in its own right. However, Les Gets is part of the Portes du Soleil ski area (in the Haute Savoie region) which is huge. This will keep everyone happy and you can village hop for lunch. In total, there are over 650 km of piste to explore. However, it must be noted that this area lies on the fringe of the Alps at a lower elevation than most resorts. As a consequence, snow cannot be guaranteed and the season is somewhat shorter. The town is partly car free and traditional in style. There are plenty of places to eat and drink and the party can continue late into the night, if desired. Les Gets has 66 groomed trails that can be accessed by using the 52 lifts; 5 of these are gondolas. There is a terrain park at Les Gets and cross country skiing over 12 kms.

This is an experiment with extreme macro.
A 300mm zoom lens with an inverted 28mm prime mounted in front gives a field of view around 2 mm wide on the APS-C sized sensor (300/28 =10.7:1 magnification, or over 10 times closer than a normal macro lens).
The setup is slightly disappointing because the depth of field is extremely narrow, making focusing very hard, even at small apertures. This is f13.
Rough focus manually on the zoom, tuned with a focusing rail on the tripod.
Oh, and the subject is connectors on a computer chip. They look like silver strands of hair to the naked eye.

Day 163 ~ Getting Sick Again
Dominic started feeling poorly and subsequently had another PFAPA Syndrome cycle… sore throat, cough, congestion, low-grade fever, and tummy pain. My sister wants all of us to get tested for CVID, which she got diagnosed with last year. It took a while, but our family doctor found an immunologist who can test and treat this disorder, so now I need to make appointments for all of us. I hate seeing my sweet boy ill… I could see it coming on in his eyes here.

So today I decided to get a bit of work done in one of our libraries. I then thought I wanted to take a photo of me on my laptop. I wasn't carrying my gorillapod nor my tripod so I had to improvise with my UBC hoodie.
This proved more difficult than I imagined. I propped the camera on the hoodie and estimated where I was sitting. First time was a fail. My head was cut off (see photo #1). So I tried again. This time there was too much space above my head (see photo #2). The third time was a charm. I was soo happy with this photo, I didn't crop it at all, just some light adjustments.
Right now my Canon 50mm f/1.4 is broken so I'm using my 50mm f/1.8. What it has done is forced me to be more creative to understand its limitation, to know that the picture won't look as nice without me helping out and giving it lots of love.
Definitely having to use my original 50mm lens f/1.8 is the best thing to happen to me. I am also focused on natural lighting - leaving my biggie flash at home.
