There's a clear reason why the Minato Mirai district, despite its immense size, has managed to maintain a modern, beautiful cityscape and functional pedestrian flow without becoming a "patchwork" structure.
This reason isn't simply because it was new land; it's because of the strong, integrated development leadership by the City of Yokohama and the strictest level of urban planning agreements (urban design guidelines) in Japan that have been thoroughly implemented for half a century.
There are three main secrets to the systematic design of Minato Mirai.
1. A pedestrian-only deck running through a single "spine" (the secret of the flow)
In a patchwork city, sidewalks are interrupted at each street, and there are many stairs to climb and descend. However, Minato Mirai was the first to design a "pedestrian deck (a pedestrian-only elevated artificial ground)" as the axis of the city.
• Queen's Square, Landmark Tower, and Sakuragicho Station are connected almost in a straight line by a deck at the second floor level.
• Shoppers and tourists can move safely and flatly between major facilities without ever encountering cars.
• This pedestrian axis is defined as a "mall," and all private buildings are required to be constructed to connect to this axis.
2. "Common Design Rules" that Prevent Private Companies from Building as They Please
Minato Mirai has very strict rules, known as the "Minato Mirai 21 District Development Basic Agreement," established in 1981. Even companies that have purchased land cannot freely design the area.
• Building Height Restrictions (Skyline Control): Building heights are gradually reduced towards the sea, regulating height so that the sea is visible from every building, or so that the entire area has a beautiful gradient.
• Wall Line Alignment: The position of building walls facing roads and sidewalks is aligned, creating an overwhelming sense of openness and unity in the streets.
• Color Restrictions: Bright primary colors cannot be used; the design is based on calm earth tones such as white, gray, and beige.
3. Starting from a "Completely Blank Canvas" on a Former Shipyard Site and Reclaimed Land
Originally, this area was home to Mitsubishi Heavy Industries' shipyard (docks) and a Japanese National Railways freight yard. In other words, it was a vast, unified plot of land, free from old wooden buildings, narrow private roads, and complex property rights.
Since construction began in 1983, the city of Yokohama has taken the lead in aiming to create a "city that will function for 100 years to come," completely developing the infrastructure (utility tunnels, district heating and cooling systems, road widths) from scratch, including underground infrastructure. Therefore, there was no need for later patchwork expansions.
In this way, Minato Mirai is a rare success story in the world, achieving both modernity and accessibility because it "established a perfect master plan (blueprint) from the beginning and has maintained that rule without deviating even a millimeter for 50 years, ensuring that private companies adhere to it."

These hand thrown stoneware, pot bellied mugs have been a favorite of mine for a long time as they hold their warmth in a cuddly form. The five shown here were done in a gradation of sky and earth colors : terracotta, wheat and a lavender,green, blue sky. Texas, especially the Panhandle where I come from, is big sky country. From this comes the name for these Texas sized mugs which are great for chili, soup or enough caffeine to keep you going strong all day long.
Their volume and size vary from 16 ounces and 4 1/2 inches high to 22 ounces and 5" high. They are microwave, dishwasher and oven safe.
Art deco extended from the lavish metropolitan joys of skyscrapers to more mundane works. Not certain if this was a garage but this is now a shop in Bude.

A functional floating arm trebuchet. I was too busy taking pictures of other stuff in the exhibit hall to see it in action.
This is the prototype cider press, and the final design for the mini presses. Now that I have a better understanding of how to press apples, I'll have to give these another try to see how they work

Statement
The interpreted functional vessel brings art experience into one’s daily life. Line, color, gesture, and the lure of materiality articulate the value of indulgence, and the transience of (plant) life. The alchemy that transforms common terra cotta clay into an object that speaks in a domestic setting points the way toward parallel transformation possible in the observed moments of personal life.

This immature White-banded Fishing Spider, Dolomedes albineus, was hardly hampered by having lost a leg, and it will likely regenerate the appendage with its next molt. It was hanging out at our front porch light the night of May 6, 2023, and I wonder it is the same one I saw last year, a little older and larger. Leavenworth, Kansas, USA.

These are bold, fun and functional! Who doesn't love the cupcake? Fun cupcake shaped lipglosses have been made into pendants. Swarovski crystal rhinestones have been added to the tops as sprinkles. Vanilla cake colored felt has been attached to the bases. The cupcakes hang from long 29" silver tone chains with lobster clasps and silver tone puff heart charms. Each cupcake is about 2 inches tall. These twist on the bottoms for application. These come in a choice of two flavors with coordinating colored frosting caps. You get a choice between Light pink/Coconut flavored lipgloss and Yellow/Banana Cream Pie flavored lipgloss.
