Majolica is a soft ceramic Tin-glazed earthenware introduced from Moorish Spain by way of the island of Majorca and produced in Italy from the 14th century. Majolica is usually restricted to five colors: cobalt blue, antimony yellow, iron red, copper green, and manganese purple. It is this colorful glaze and the intense colors of majolica that make this ceramic stand apart, as illustrated by the Majolica covered dome of S. Giovanni Battista Church in Vietri sul Mare.

The 4th annual earthquake functional exercise was conducted March 12 by U.S. Army Garrison Japan’s Directorate of Emergency Services. The exercise was held in the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) on the Camp Zama installation. For the first time, a Joint Information Center (JIC) was set up in the Camp Zama Army Community Service building by the U.S. Army Garrison Japan Public Affairs Office and a Mass Care Facility, set up at Yano Fitness Center by the Camp Zama Directorate of Family Moral, Welfare and Recreations. I can't figure out how to scan this series...so I may take a picture of the 4 cards before I send them off.
This is a functional ATC. It stands up (it's like the science fair display boards...except it's 2 1/2" x 3 1/2"). You can light a tealight behind it and then you'll have a little illuminated light/lantern.
The main part of this card is above - it's the standard size. I cut out the middle and replaced it with a translucent wax paper. Then, I placed a black sticker on another sheet of the wax paper and affixed that to the first piece of paper (so the image is in between the wax paper).
There are 2 side panels on this card so it can stand up (they fold behind the card so it can fit in an ATC sleeve). Each side is 2 1/4" wide by 3 1/2" tall.
This card was traded on August 18, 2008, to Spiced Coffee.

More uploads from my morning at the Kūki‘o Anchialine Ponds: These next few shots show more landscape views of how the current gated community there embraces these ponds, restored ‘prettily’ versus ‘functionally’ for their charming Hawaiian real estate views. While their reasons may not be totally pono with historical preservationists, I for one am glad for the result: The ponds live on and are not totally filled in or otherwise destroyed.
Compare this view of today, and what you know of our 2010 lifestyle, to this description I had often read-to-remember during my own tenure at neighboring Hualalai, sharing this same ahupua‘a (land division):
“Ka‘ūpūlehu: The ancients revered this land, this ahupua‘a called Ka‘ūpūlehu on the slopes of the mountain they named Hualalai, in the region of Kekaha. The kaha lands, Kekaha was called: waterless lands brimming with other riches, coveted by the chiefs of old. Reading the signs of the ‘Eka wind that called forth the canoes for good fishing, and the powerful Mumuku wind that warned them to stay home, the ancients knew when to fish for aku and ‘ōpelu along the bountiful shoreline. From coastal ponds fattened by the upland rains, they harvested tiny red shrimp called ‘ōpae‘ula. With the ‘ōpae‘ula they fashioned balls of chum that attracted the ‘ōpelu for harvests to sustain their people. In a continuous exchange up, down, and across the ahupua‘a the villagers of Ka‘ūpūlehu exchanged fish and salt from the shoreline for the taro, breadfruit, and sweet potato grown by the upland dwellers. In turn they grew hala and loulu and wove their fronds into mats, hats, and containers that they carried up the mountain on trails they had built, stone by stone. Thus was the ahupua‘a, a land division sweeping from mountain to sea, a major cultural, environmental, and economic unit of the traditional Hawaiians.”
“Because the conservation of natural resources was foremost in the Hawaiian mind, fishing grounds were never depleted. The catch was shared among villagers, and fishing was prohibited during spawning seasons to ensure ongoing abundance and replenishment. We, as those who now occupy this land, invite you to share in the mutual responsibility of sustaining and maintaining beautiful Ka‘ūpūlehu. Our natural resources are precious and fragile, and we can Mālama kahakai together, kākou.”
