Functionally, it's not much of a fence--I don't think it can exclude or confine anything. But it is one of my favorites.

I didn't have a micro-bike, so I quickly made one, out of wire scraps.
One could argue that the bike isn't fully functional, but you can't deny the weight is down to a bare minimum...

In last night's dream I ran into Christian Montone at a summer resort. Upon recognizing each other he immediately said, "Go get all your records!" and disappeared. In the next scene he and I had found a large, quiet room and were having a great listening party, playing old records and CDs while just relaxing. One of the records we both particularly enjoyed was one called Slow, Like Lemon Drops by a band called Functional Alabama. The music had a light and happy feel to it. One song that stood out sounded a bit like Skokiaan.
The coastal towers constituted the defensive system, of sighting and of communication along the coastal strip of the whole island, at the time of the Kingdom of Sicily.
Most of the towers still existing were built on topological and design indications by the Florentine architect Camillo Camilliani, and are almost recognizable as a true design archetype. The Camilliani received the task of building the towers in 1583.
From a functional point of view the towers were divided into two main categories: the proper defense towers, which stood near the inhabited centers and were equipped with armed garrison. The watchtowers or watchtowers, smaller and arranged on the heights to watch many miles of sea. They all have an identical square-based structure, with a few simple internal divisions and a large cistern to collect rainwater.
Before reaching San Vito Lo Capo, on the Gulf of Castelluzzo-Macari, you can admire the Torre Isuliddra (pictured), recently restored.

Le torri costiere costituivano il sistema difensivo, di avvistamento e di comunicazione lungo la fascia costiera di tutta l’isola, al tempo del Regno di Sicilia.
La maggior parte delle torri ancora esistenti sono state costruite su indicazioni topologiche e progettuali dell’architetto fiorentino Camillo Camilliani, e sono riconoscibilissime quasi come un vero e proprio archetipo progettuale. Il Camilliani ricevette l’incarico di costruire le torri nel 1583.
Dal punto di vista funzionale le torri si distinguevano in due grandi categorie: le torri di difesa vere e proprie, che sorgevano vicino ai centri abitati ed erano provviste di guarnigione armata. Le torri di guardia o di avvistamento, più piccole e disposte sulle alture per sorvegliare molte miglia di mare. Hanno tutte una identica struttura a base quadrata, con pochi e semplici divisioni interne ed una capiente cisterna per raccogliere l’acqua piovana.
Prima di giungere a San Vito Lo Capo, sul Golfo di Castelluzzo-Macari, si può ammirare la Torre Isuliddra (in foto), recentemente restaurata.

La Torre de Hércules sirve como faro y emblema de la entrada al puerto de La Coruña (noroeste) desde el siglo I de nuestra era, cuando los romanos lo construyeron con el nombre de Farum Brigantium. Este faro monumental de 55 metros está edificado sobre una roca que de 57 metros de altura. La torre consta de tres niveles que se van estrechando hacia la cúspide y el primero de ellos corresponde a la estructura del faro romano. Adyacente a su base, se halla un pequeño edificio romano de forma rectangular. El sitio comprende también los petroglifos del Monte dos Bicos que datan de la Edad de Hierro, un cementerio musulmán y un parque de esculturas. Los cimientos romanos del faro se pusieron al descubierto durante una serie de excavaciones arqueológicas llevadas a cabo en el decenio de 1990. Desde la Edad Media hasta el siglo XIX, numerosas leyendas han ido jalonando la historia de la Torre de Hércules. Es el único faro de la Antigüedad grecorromana que ha conservado en cierta medida su integridad estructural y que sigue desempeñando la misma función.
The Tower of Hercules has served as a lighthouse and landmark at the entrance of La Coruña harbour in north-western Spain since the late 1st century A.D. when the Romans built the Farum Brigantium. The Tower, built on a 57 metre high rock, rises a further 55 metres, of which 34 metres correspond to the Roman masonry and 21 meters to the restoration directed by architect Eustaquio Giannini in the 18th century, who augmented the Roman core with two octagonal forms. Immediately adjacent to the base of the Tower, is a small rectangular Roman building. The site also features a sculpture park, the Monte dos Bicos rock carvings from the Iron Age and a Muslim cemetery. The Roman foundations of the building were revealed in excavations conducted in the 1990s. Many legends from the Middle Ages to the 19th century surround the Tower of Hercules, which is unique as it is the only lighthouse of Greco-Roman antiquity to have retained a measure of structural integrity and functional continuity.

Si tratta di uno dei monumenti più noti e rappresentati di Villa Adriana ed è divenuto uno dei simboli dell’unicità e della concezione innovativa dell’impianto architettonico dell’intero complesso residenziale. L’isola era accessibile attraverso due strutture girevoli in legno e la sensazione, ancora oggi, è quella di trovarsi in un luogo nel quale potersi ritirare per svolgere in tranquillità le proprie attività . L’Edificio prende il nome da un raffinato fregio figurato in marmo con soggetto marino che ne decorava la trabeazione.
Costituito da un corpo circolare preceduto da un pronao che immette in un portico di forma circolare sorretto da colonne ioniche e coperto da volta a botte. Il colonnato si riflette sull’acqua di un ampio canale che delimita un’isola artificiale, sulla quale si imposta un edificio che può essere identificato come una vera e propria domus, una sorta di residenza minore all’interno della residenza imperiale.
Lo spazio interno, seppure ridotto e condizionato dalla pianta circolare, è stato sfruttato in maniera ottimale per realizzare tutti gli ambienti idonei alle esigenze dell’ imperatore: e, in effetti, la costruzione ripete nei suoi elementi costitutivi, lo schema tipico della domus, con atrio, cortile, portico per passeggiare, tablino, cubicula, impianto termale e, perfino, latrine, ubicate negli spazi di risulta. La caratteristica più attuale di questa villa in miniatura è forse proprio la finalità funzionale che sta alla base della progettazione, unita alla capacità di costringere e adattare lo spazio in senso estetico.
Villa Adriana: The Maritime Theater
It is one of the most famous monuments of Villa Adriana and has become one of the symbols of the uniqueness and innovative design of the architectural system of the entire residential complex. The island was accessible through two revolving wooden structures and the feeling, still today, is to be in a place where you can retire to carry out your activities in peace. The building is named after a sophisticated marble frieze with a marine theme decorating the trabeation.
It is constituted by a circular body preceded by a pronaos that enters a circular arcade supported by Ionic columns and covered by barrel vault. The colonnade is reflected on the water of a large canal that delimits an artificial island, on which a building is set, which can be identified as a real domus, a sort of minor residence within the imperial residence.
The interior space, albeit reduced and conditioned by the circular plant, has been optimally exploited to create all the environments suitable for the emperor's needs: and, indeed, the construction is repeated in its constituent elements, the typical domus scheme, with lobby, courtyard, porch for stroll, tablecloth, cubicula, spa and, even, latrines, located in the spaces of the result. The most current feature of this miniature villa is perhaps the functional purpose behind the design, coupled with the ability to force and adapt space in aesthetic sense.
C'est l'un des monuments les plus connus et les plus représentés de la Villa Adriana et est devenu l'un des symboles de l'unicité et du concept innovant de la disposition architecturale de l'ensemble du complexe résidentiel. L'île était accessible à travers deux structures tournantes en bois et le sentiment, encore aujourd'hui, est celui d'être dans un endroit où l'on peut se retirer pour exercer ses activités en toute quiétude. Le bâtiment tire son nom d'une frise de marbre figurée raffinée avec un sujet marin qui décorait son entablement.
Composé d'un corps circulaire précédé d'un pronaos qui mène à un portique circulaire soutenu par des colonnes ioniques et couvert par une voûte en berceau. La colonnade se reflète dans l'eau d'un grand canal qui délimite une île artificielle, sur laquelle est érigé un bâtiment qui peut être identifié comme une véritable domus, une sorte de résidence mineure au sein de la résidence impériale.
L'espace intérieur, bien que réduit et conditionné par le plan circulaire, a été exploité de manière optimale pour créer toutes les pièces adaptées aux besoins de l'empereur: et, en fait, la construction reprend dans ses éléments constitutifs, le schéma typique de la domus, avec atrium, cour, porche pour se promener, tablinum, cubicula, spa et même des latrines, situés dans les espaces résultants. La caractéristique la plus actuelle de cette villa miniature est peut-être l'objectif fonctionnel derrière la conception, combiné à la capacité de restreindre et d'adapter l'espace dans un sens esthétique.

I was amazed to see this, although maybe I shouldn't have been since it's the second one I've seen in Newquay. Registered as an FS Lublina 07 and imported in 2017. 72,000km at the last MOT. I like things like this. Compared to a modern van it has a functional and honest look about it rather than something which is trying to make a fashion statement whilst (according to people I know who own them) being a nightmare of high costs and unreliability. I've no idea how reliable this would be, but I bet it's easy to repair.
ZUK production ran from 1958 to 1998. In latter years the company was owned by Daewoo.
A pair of Amtrak Amfleet I cars are seen at Alexandria, VA. The first of these cares were delivered in 1975, making the oldest 51 years old. when this photo was taken. Railfans mocked them because of their tubular shape, their narrow windows, and "they all look alike". The public accepted them. They increased reliability and in many ways saved Amtrak.
Yet here we are some five decades later and they're still with us. And they're not relegated to some back country local runs. They are still in heavy line-haul service on the nation's busiest corridor. And they still do their jobs well. The average traveler might not know how old they really are--after all their interiors have been updated over the years.
They've been pulled by GG-1s, E60CHs, P30CHs, P32-8BWHs, P40 DCs, P42DCs, and --gack-SC-44s.
Meanwhile, Amtrak has had loads of trouble with new purchases, especially the Siemens Ventrure cars, but others too. So, given that they are doing what they were intended to do 50 years ago, the question is, what did Budd understand five decades ago that today's car builders don't. Care to comment?

Neither were the sculptures of his friends Claes Oldenburg and the late Coosje van Bruggen; too bad that their Collar and Bow sculpture planned for this concert hall never got off the ground...
