Nature has many languages. Project Florence takes advantage of the sensibility of plants to different light frequencies and uses it to trigger electrical responses by a plant and compares the similarities between plant signals and natural language processes. It approaches plants as reactive living matter which generates new perceptions towards how we interface with our natural environment. This creates a rudimentary conversation with our natural environment. In this system, the user first attempts to communicate with or influence the plant through modulated natural language. Their inputs are analyzed for sentiment and semantic content. The resulting signals are used to modulate a light source that projects onto the plant. During this, the chemical and electrical signals are measured. The resulting responses from the plant are transformations of the input, driven by linguistic trees as well as lexical paraphrases. Project Florence can be a mediator between the natural environment and our technological world.

Male Starling (Sturnus vulgaris) perched on an aerial. During the winter months, the numbers of Starlings present within Britain and Ireland are swelled by the arrival of individuals from breeding populations located elsewhere within Europe. The numbers arriving vary from one winter to the next and are influenced by weather conditions on the Continent. Wintering Starlings roost communally and vast flocks may congregate at favoured sites, typically performing amazing aerobatic displays (known as ‘murmurations’) before dropping into the roost, which may be a reedbed, a group of conifers or a human structure, such as a pier. With many thousands of birds using a roost there is the potential for nuisance, their droppings fouling the ground beneath and around the chosen site.
These vast flocks have more humble beginnings, with small flocks of Starlings coming together as dusk approaches. Gradually, as more and more birds join the gathering, a huge pulsating flock is formed. As the light begins to fade so part of the flock will plunge down towards the chosen roost, almost as if testing its nerve to see who will be the first bird to drop into the roost itself. In this demonstration, the two tuning forks are hit and vibrate at their natural frequency, resulting in constructive interference and a loud sound. One tuning fork is then adjusted slightly, giving it a different frequency (but very close.) The effect is remarkable: it gets louder and quieter and louder and quieter.
This is called beats, and I explain in the video where it comes from and will on the next slide as well.
