Yellow Swamp Brittlegill / russula claroflava. Derbyshire. 28/08/17.
There were many Yellow Swamp Brittlegills scattered throughout the wood and always in groups. Despite their frequency it was impossible to find any in fresh, bright or good condition. It seemed that they were an attractive food source for squirrels, small mammals, slugs and snails. I could always tell the ones that had been eaten by squirrels because the whole fruiting body was pulled out of the ground or the cap yanked off.
This was one of the better YSBs I came across believe it or not!
I think mice or voles had nibbled the edge and below, some gills had been rasped by snails too. Beyond being eaten, the fungus itself had passed its prime. The once bright lemon-yellow cap had faded and was drying out which created a wrinkled surface. BEST VIEWED LARGE.
Radio astronomy is the study of celestial objects that emit radio waves. Using this technology, scientists can study astronomical phenomena that would otherwise be invisible. The Very Large Array is a renowned set of radio dishes in Sorocco, New Mexico, which work together as one massive antenna to scan the skies and help us learn more about the universe. Objects that are commonly studied include radio galaxies, quasars, pulsars, supernova remnants, gamma ray bursts, radio-emitting stars, the sun and planets, astrophysical masers, black holes, and the hydrogen gas that constitutes a large portion of the Milky Way galaxy.
The Array was also used for talking to distant spacecraft probes which are part of the Voyager program, a project that I have been fascinated with for a long time after hearing about its accomplishment of being responsible for sending the first man-made object outside of our solar system. Voyager 1 is just breaching the Heliopause border after travelling a million miles a day since its launch in 1977.

Continuing with some light painting exploits, combining some flash at the end on my subjects to make for hopefully and interesting portrait shot.
Pixelstick was used for the light painting and SB900 on 1/4 power was used to illuminate my son.

Duga (Russian: Дуга) was a Soviet over-the-horizon (OTH) radar system used as part of the Soviet ABM early-warning network. The system operated from July 1976 to December 1989. Two operational Duga radars were deployed, one near Chernobyl and Chernihiv in what was then called the Ukrainian SSR (present-day Ukraine), the other in eastern Siberia.
The Duga systems were extremely powerful, over 10 MW in some cases, and broadcast in the shortwave radio bands. They appeared without warning, sounding like a sharp, repetitive tapping noise at 10 Hz,[1] which led to it being nicknamed by shortwave listeners the Russian Woodpecker. The random frequency hops disrupted legitimate broadcasts, amateur radio operations, oceanic commercial aviation communications, utility transmissions, and resulted in thousands of complaints by many countries worldwide. The signal became such a nuisance that some receivers such as amateur radios and televisions actually began including 'Woodpecker Blankers' in their circuit designs in an effort to filter out the interference.
The unclaimed signal was a source for much speculation, giving rise to theories such as Soviet mind control and weather control experiments. However, because of its distinctive transmission pattern, many experts and amateur radio hobbyists quickly realized it to be an over-the-horizon radar system. NATO military intelligence had already given it the NATO reporting name of either STEEL WORK or STEEL YARD. While the amateur radio community was well aware of the system, this theory was not publicly confirmed until after the fall of the Soviet Union.

Pre-dawn light on a windy morning in the Mesquite Dunes of Death Valley National Park.
Recently I spent a week touring the California desert to take photos of unprotected lands that are under threat of energy development, but I couldn't resist swinging through Death Valley on my way back to Vegas where I would catch my flight home. The cloudy skies didn't show much promise for color that morning (although they did eventually part to create dramatic golden light beams), so I decided to focus on the blowing sand with a telephoto lens. I thought I'd share this one before processing some of the more dramatic images
