For our trip to Sicily, we flew into Catania airport and took a car service to our first hotel in Ortigia. On the way there, on Viale Ermocrate in Siracusa, we passed a cemetery that caught my attention. (It was actually two cemeteries and a foundry that appeared to make tombstones and sculptures for the graves in the adjacent cemetery.) It was a communal cemetery, presumably for people of Siracusa. The other cemetery was for soldiers from the British Commonwealth who lost their lives in World War 2 in and around Siracusa. Many of them were glider pilots who encountered severe winds on their approach to Sicily.
Were I driving myself, I would have stopped at the time to take some photos, but as a passenger, I could only gaze with interest and chalk it up to a lost opportunity.
By our good fortune, however, we passed the location again on our trip to Noto. This time, I insisted that we stop on the way back and these photos memorialize that visit.
I post these photos out of personal interest and certainly not as commentary about the deceased. I do welcome any comments or requests regarding this photos, or my having posted them here.
Not sure of the proper name for the coloured frames that appear on this reel. The reel and little cube of pictures came from a toy camera that I think M had as a child. it broke but I couldn't through the little reel of circus pictures away. Today I realised why not! They were destined for Flickr- where else!Each picture is 0.6cm wide.
