The Jawa 500 DOHC is one of the most successful speedway motorcycles of its time, largely thanks to its incredibly solid and simple construction. Jawa was founded in Prague, Czechoslovakia in 1929 by industrialist František Janeček who had bought the remnants of motorcycle manufacturer Wanderer. The name “Jawa” was created by combining the first two letters of his surname and the first two letters of Wanderer “Ja + Wa”.

In the 1970s, the speedway racing Jawa 500/894 made an appearance alongside the Jawa 500/895 – which was its long track racing sibling. Jawa designed these motorcycles with a strong focus on building a bullet-proof engine and gearbox, with the lightest possible frame and ancillaries.

The Jawa DOHC 500 used a four-stroke, 494cc, DOHC, single-cylinder, air-cooled alloy engine with a single carburetor, and a header pipe that exits out the front and down the right side of the bike. The engine has a 13.5:1 compression ratio, an 85mm bore with an 87mm stroke, a single overhead spark, 4 valves, a 34mm carburetor, and 60-65 hp at 7500 rpm.

The dry weight of the Jawa 500 DOHC is just 85.5 kilograms (188.5 lbs), making it a supremely flickable motorcycle – ideal for the fast paced, millimeter perfect riding style needed for speedway, but also well-suited to dirt track and ice racing.

I believe this is an Ariel HT5, seen here at the Guernsey two day trial, 3rd and 4th March 2012, this bike belongs to one of the Jersey riders.

The Ariel Trials version was developed from the Red Hunter series and was commercialised 1956-59. There were 2 versions available: HT5 with 500 cm and HT3 with 350 cm. There was no lighter and more powerful 4 stroke trials bike around. Front wheel was 21 and rear 19(!), ground clearance about 22 cm.

Arguably the most capable of the 'old school' trials irons, the HT5 disappeared along with the other Ariel four-strokes in 1959 after only 450-or-so had been made, though Sammy Miller's famous example - 'GOV 132' - would continue winning at the highest level well into the 1960s.

The final round of Swedish National Championship in Motocross, shot at Malma Racetrack in Vasteras, Sweden 2013-09-15

In some ways it seems a shame to me that such a machine stands lifeless in a museum rather than being enjoyed in its native environment of cobbled hills, windswept moors and deep valleys. Or perhaps I am just being nostalgic.

On the positive side it is great to be able to view this West Yorkshire motorcycle on display at Bradford Industrial Museum. No smell of hot oil or sounds of slowly cooling metal though.

646cc Panther model 120 four stroke single, made by Phelon & Moore of Cleckeaton, West Yorkshire.

My own JAP 2S, awaiting cosmetic work. Goes like a champ. Note the reduction gearbox, which was an optional extra. The engine originally powered a potato riddler.

The cylindrical object to the right is an oil bath air filter, presumably fitted because the engine worked in a dusty environment. Oil had leaked and rotted the rubber pipe from the filter to the carb. I will have to fashion a replacement since this is an original feature worth keeping.

Since the photo was taken it has all been stripped down and found to be in very good nick mechanically. It will be restored to as new condition (there is not much original paint left) and finished in light blue/green to match the air filter, which was saved from rust by being coated in a layer of oil.
