We were driving through France going towards Avignon when the main road took us through this forboding village. Towering over the village like a prophet of doom was the catholic church with an oversized clock tower. Past inhabitants must have been left with little doubt who the boss was!
On my first visit to Cornwall, the county lived up to its forboding and mystic reputation. Everywhere we visited was shrouded in the fogs time and rain ...

It is a rainy, windy, cool day in Jersey today. Tried going out to the beach but the sky was forboding. Instead, we sat around and played Apples to Apples and drank margaritas. After a nice nap I'm reading Virtual Light and now it is time for dinner.

I just love this shot of the forboding, Mordor-esque amphitheatre of Cwm Glas, adjacent to Cwm Llafar with its steep, sharp spires reaching for the sky.
I love how the gray day in Edinburgh gave the city atmosphere, this tree looked forboding and eerie, I love this kind of shot. This shot taken on 35mm ISO200 fujifilm with Nikon F55 SLR and Nikkor 28-100mm lens
S.E. Queensland's infamous afternoon storm fronts made a resurgence during October. This photo catches some of the mood from a typical storm.

Looks quite forboding really! I like the DOF here. Feels a bit LOTR!
Taken in Thetford Forest, Norfolk UK using a Canon EOS 400D with my Canon 70-300mm IS USM lens.
"And every day the paper boy brings more..
And if the dam breaks open many years too soon..
And if there is no room upon the hill..
And if your head explodes with dark forbodings too..
I'll see you on the dark side of the moon"
another view of the point of one of the circles. it was amazing we had any sunshine at all this day - the weather was really forboding.

Title: The canoe without oars will guide me
Description:
Inspired by an image which appeared during a meditation retreat in which I saw myself standing in a boat being pushed off into the ocean by my meditation teacher. It was a small boat with no sail, no engine and no oars.
In 2004 I was about to embark on a journey to New Zealand to live for an indefinite period of time and this image came with a strong sense of being able and willing to trust in that which is greater than ‘self’. Allowing oneself to be taken in the right direction not knowing in the worldly sense but letting the spiritual life take the lead. The tall cliffs which seem insurmountable, dark and forboding in the painting, are at the same time the gateway through which the boat will pass into the light and travel across the ocean to the ‘other shore’.
Monaro's are awesome. This shot will potentially come out too dark on most monitors - it's designed to be quite dark and forboding but I may have overdone it on the storm clouds somewhat.

Again, while wandering, I came across this bamboo grove. First of all....bamboo? Seriously? I do not think that is a native Californian plant. When I'm near Santa Cruz, I'm expecting artsy hippies, not deadly ninjas. Anyways, this path was too forboding for me to dare follow it. I've seen enough horror movies to know what's up.
I don't know exactly why I keep getting drawn back to the military cemetary, but I do. A big element is the incongruity of the military needing to make something orderly out of something as disorderly as death. Lining the graves up in perfect symetry which only accentuates the sense of loss. Treating the losses as cookie-cutter equivalents as a general rests in the same sized plot as the private next to him.
It is a stark place, forboding, depressing, and yet strangely uplifting as well.
