Utricularia are carnivorous plants usually growing in water or very wet soils (or occasionally epiphytically on trees!). Their underwater or underground traps are very complex and suck in small prey such as insects when triggered. They're actually some of the most common and wide-ranging carnivorous plants, and can be found in every US state and all continents besides Antarctica. However, most or all of the plant is underwater or hardly visible when not flowering, so you're unlikely to spot them unless they're in flower!

 

Some species like this one are actually known for being weedy in cultivation and spreading between pots.

Identification: assorted weathered coral skeleton fragments, with one white translucent mineral/crystalline piece mixed in.

Confidence: moderate for “coral fragments as a group,” low to moderate for exact piece-by-piece species IDs.

 

What is in the photo

 

Most of these pieces appear to be dead stony coral skeleton or coral-derived limestone. Coral skeletons are made of calcium carbonate, and when bleached, worn, and beach-rounded they often become ivory to pale cream with visible pores, cups, or tube-like openings where corallites once were.

 

The long curved branching piece is most consistent with a branching coral fragment, possibly from an Acropora-type coral. NOAA’s coral status review describes Acropora skeletons as branched, porous, and bearing tube-like corallites.

 

The flatter piece at left with many evenly spaced round openings looks like a colonial coral surface showing multiple corallites, likely from a star/honeycomb-type stony coral rather than a shell or bone. Corals of this kind form hard skeletons with repeated corallite cups across the surface.

 

The translucent whitish lump at upper right does not look like coral skeleton. It is more consistent with a calcite crystal cluster or similar calcium-carbonate mineral piece. Mindat’s mineral references describe calcite as commonly white to clear and occurring in clustered crystalline masses.

 

Description

 

This is a small arrangement of pale marine material on sand: rounded cream-to-ivory coral pieces with holes, pores, and eroded surfaces, plus one brighter translucent crystalline fragment. The image emphasizes texture, porosity, age, and natural weathering. It reads as a study of beach-collected reef debris rather than intact specimens.

 

Practical identification note

 

I would not assign exact species names to all pieces from this image alone. Several coral groups can weather into very similar-looking fragments once detached and beach-worn. The safest identification is mixed coral rubble / dead coral skeleton fragments, with one likely calcite specimen.

Nuptial (love) gifts are items (prey) provided by a male invertebrate to a female prior to mating. This male dance fly is mating with the female while she is consuming a nuptial gift (prey insect) offered by the male!

16 exposures each advanced by 0.5mm towards the camera. Each photo was a 1 second exposure lit by tungsten to the top side and a fill flash to the above left in front about 1 meter distant.

 

A dead sphynx moth that I found in the light fixture in the living room. Its been there a while I think.

Must be the oddest one I've ever taken. The dead bug is stuck to a young leaf of a rhododendron but I suspect a strand of spiders web is involved as well. I have not rotated the pic :)

Lichen with focus stack. A beginner in Macro and stacking and possibly overkill but this is 40 images blended in photoshop.

While color-correcting the interior of the beet I sat with it, freshly sliced (it fades with exposure to air), next to me. Of course who knows if your monitor is calibrated the same as mine, but the color is dead spot on correct on my screen.

 

The glass is of the semi-frosted variety that's used as non-glare glass in picture framing. I painted on the smooth side (so I can wash it off later... I hope) and placed a soft box underneath, then lit the yam and golden beet from above. It's a lot of orange, I know. This was more of an experiment than anything. I think that if I try this sort of thing again I'll put dilute paint into a spray (mister) bottle and use it as a makeshift airbrush.
