Sheet weaver. [Nine image focus stack]

Dew drop taken from vertically above at 1.5:1 and focus stacked from 2 pics

25 images taken with 50D and MP-E 65mm at 1x using 0.6mm steps with a Cognisys Stackshot and stacked in Zerene Stacker. Lit with MT-24EX @ 1/64 with Rosco 332 and 366 gels.

I came across this dead beetle while pulling weeds and just couldn't let it go to waste. This is a seven-shot stack merged in CombineZP and enhanced with Topaz Detail 3. Canon T2i w/ Canon 100mm f/2.8 @ f/11 on a macro rail.

Asiatic lily (Lilium asiatic) stigma with grains of pollen around the edges. 17 images taken with 50D MP-E 65mm at 2x manually stepped with macro rail and stacked in Zerene Stacker. Lit with MT-24EX @ 1/32 with diffusion gels.

A young Anna's Hummingbird and a Variegated Meadowhawk were resting on twigs in the same bush, but I couldn't get focus on both of them in the same shot.

 

I tried handheld focus-stacking by keeping the framing about the same and taking one photo of the hummingbird in focus and a second one with the dragonfly in focus (behind it) and combining the shots in Photoshop.

 

The unpleasant, but plain, background was the wall of a building.

 

The young hummer was feeding independently but still has some down feathers to lose.

 

And, I've never seen a yellow wash on the backwing of a Variegated Meadowhawk.

I just recently learned about focus stacking with macro photography! Just experimenting to see how it works.

 

I found this lovely Native Hydrangea growing in a ditch. This is photo was composited from 9 photos with different focal lengths.

 

For Trial1, I'm noticing Photoshop's blending has some issues around the white flower petals. It's creating blur where it shouldn't.

A little pandemic, stuck-at-home macro experiment. Mistakes were made. ;)

My Sony A7RII with the Sony G 24-105mm F4 lens is mounted on an Edelkrone StandONE and FlexTILT Head 2 with the Quick Release One.

 

Lighting is my desk LED light plus two LItraTorches with diffusers mounted on a Platypod Max with the Platypod Goosenecks.

This image has a clusterf_ck story behind it. I was attempting a 15-shot focus stack while tethered and employing Helicon Remote software control, as I'd done on so many recent images, but couldn't get it to work. It took me a full day and many trials/errors before I discovered the problem. Plural: problems; and that's the really pernicious part. If you're just doing one thing wrong it's fairly easy to figure out, but when it's a combination of three things, stumbling onto the solution to any one, or even two, doesn't help - you need to solve all three simultaneously.

 

Then, part two: I was simultaneously attempting to shoot with different exposures so I could make an HDR of this scene, which has lots of deep shadows and some reflective highlights. But my middle set didn't work and there was so much time taken between my under-and over-exposed sets due to the other problem that the tangelos changed size, shape, or softness and settled about a twentieth of an inch between sets, making image alignment impossible. (I used the underexposed set.)

 

For fans of Helicon: I had adjusted two innocuous-seeming preference settings in the software, and had discovered and started using the auto-focus feature to save time defining far and near focus points. Both preference changes were fatal and you cannot use auto-focus on both back and front points, the second usage wipes away the memory of the first. The pref. settings (for those truly interested in the software) in v1.21 beta were "size of focusing steps" and "pause between focusing steps". Using a Nikon D300 I'd attempted to use "small" and something like a 25ms pause; had success when altered to "large" and 100ms.

Shot with D300 at f8 with AF-S 105mm Micro VR 2.8, SB-800 with diffuser right, SB-800 left with gobo to illumnate the white bristleboard background. There is an overhead halogen desk lamp providing ambient. This is a composite of 30 images, each with a slightly different focus. This was due to the fact that the flower is approximately 40mm in depth, and F8 has only slightly less that 2 mm of depth. The stacks were assembled in Zerene Stacker. TetherScript was used to capture the images for the focus stack.

2021-019 Compass - This is a stack of 19 images. From my research, it looks like the average number of images to use is somewhere between 30 and 50. As I expected, there are mechanical aids to help maintain consistent microadjustments. Now I just have to decide how much I'm willing to invest in such aids. :)

Materials from a school project in Evesham. Photos taken by students through the town and along the river were merged using the Focus Stacking tools in Photoshop. They were then printed out for use in a giant collage.

This photo was my first attempt with the focus-stacking method. It combines seven photos with the Helicon Focus software.

Wide-band (6GHz) amplifier.

 

This is one chip on a carrier of about 100 chips. The chip shown is approximately 0.4mm x 0.6mm

 

One cool aspect of this image is that the person who provided the chip did not know what it 'really' looked like. He had specified that this and that be done in certain ways, but until he saw this image he didn't know if it existed in the way he designed it.

 

I used Zerene stacker to combine 22 images to provide the close to fully focused image. From top to bottom of the stack was a substantial difference!
