Cambridge Street, Manchester

Plenty of info online but I’ve lifted a few key paragraphs courtesy of Dani Cole’s The Mill…

Originally built on the bank of the River Medlock in 1801, it was soon dwarfed by Birley’s Cotton Mill and Marsland’s Cotton Mill – two enormous mills that later became known as Chorlton Mills. In the early nineteenth century, this stretch of Chorlton-on-Medlock was a sight to behold: one of the engine rooms of the city’s industry, thronging with workers, vehicles and mess. In the 1830s, more than 2,000 people worked at Birley’s complex alone, suggesting it was the largest mill in Manchester. Three of the mills on Cambridge Street were connected by tram tunnels to allow them to move material between buildings unimpeded by the crowds outside.

The building now call Hotspur Press was the largest structure in the Medlock Mills complex, which was owned by a cotton baron called John Fairweather, and then by a series of his heirs in the following decades.

According to a map published in 1888, the building had by this point ended the first phase of its life making cotton, and was now a printing works, owned by the Percy Brothers Ltd. A brass sign bearing that company name is still in place next to one of the building’s doors.

It has been suggested that the name ‘Hotspur Press’ has connections with the popular boys’ comic the Hotspur, which ran from 1933 to 1959 and Henry Percy (‘Harry Hotspur’), the medieval knight who was the son of the 1st Earl of Northumberland during the Hundred Years’ War. Sadly, the former of these is not true, and the latter remains conjecture.

Wasn’t sure this place was still standing but apparently it’s been bought and is going to be redeveloped into even more trendy apartments.

In contrast this was looking west and using an iPhone 7+ with the lens against the glass, and using an app called ProCamera 8 which has an HDR feature built in that includes an in iPhone conversion to black and white. Done a pretty good job considering the size of the lens with nice detail, then processed in LightRoom.

Not been here for a while but well worth a visit - the Walkie Talkie building roof garden and viewing area. This shot was from a Flickr meet-up with the lads from Worcester and around those parts, on April 7th 2018.

Jake and Gunther "meet up" on-line. They both live on the water, on opposite ends of the continent. Lucky 3110, Ingrid, first posted her photo of Gunther (on the right), which spurred me to post my photo of Jake (on the left), lingering in my storage. I just learned how to make diptychs, and this seemed like a natural. Ingrid had the same thought.

Jake is on the left, saying, "Hi, Gunther. The light of your stardom is reaching all the way over here and shining in my face. Thanks." Gunther is saying, (well, you have to ask Ingrid/Lucky3110), maybe: "Hi Jake, Aren't we grand!" Standard poodles of the world, unite.

Inspired by the Dipthych collaboration challenge for 52.5 of 2010 group. Ingrid is not in the group, but maybe this will count as okay.

Such fun being buddies

[14/52]

Hey guys!

I spent this weekend in Munich, together with Laura, Moritz, Andrea, Bassam and Gina! Even though it was reallyreallyreally cold we had a great time, I always love getting to know other photographers.

Laura is truly beautiful inside and out and it makes me so happy I could finally meet and photograph her :)

Ohhh and this is my 100th photo on Flickr! During those 100 photos I have learned so much about photography, about life, about myself. Since last summer photography has become such an important part of me life and I'm really grateful for that :)

we had a ghosttower meetup last halloween

this lady was reading a childrens horror story

And more to the point is why have I not spotted this view point before...... A skywards view in More London from the Flickr meet-up day. {A "Y" in the sky rather than an XYZ.} Thanks to London Lass for the pointer !!

Taken during the Liverpool Meet Up Group trip to West Kirby, a fabulous turnout and such a lovely group of people, if you couldn't make it you missed a great day

i hate high hights and the idea of flying and such but i would totally do this ... think of the shots i could get!

Well I had to take a picture of this mural, seen on Gibb Street, Digbeth, Birmingham; I’m sure it was painted just for me…..

This is just a fraction of the overall mural, I have no idea who the artist is therefore I can’t give him/her a credit for a great piece of work.

PS. Of course I had to show this before one of the other Togs from our Flickr meet up in Birmingham showed it… LOL

PPS. Just found out the artist is 'Dan Kitchener' from Essex and he has my greatest respect; he is my new hero after Horatio Nelson …. lol

Here is a quote from an interview he has given;

Interviewer : I’ve notice that you paint a lot of city scenes “under rain” why is that ?

I am from the UK, it rains a lot! My fascination with light comes in here, lighting at night has a very different quality, dreamlike, sometimes quite lonely and ghostly… rain accentuates this, exaggerates the light and the reflections, and can create some surprising and unusual effects on wet roads etc, I am always surpassed by what I see in a rainy night scene…in Tokyo last February, I literally lay in a puddle on the road at night to get some amazing shots, totally worth all the confused looks at me and being soaked…

I'm just back home from the incredible Austria Flickr meet-up. It has been a wonderful week within the most perfect surroundings and with so many lovely people. I don't know how to manage to wake up tomorrow and to realize that there aren't 19 photography-addicted people around to have breakfast with and then start a daily adventure through the mountains. I can't remember the last time I was so productive and in love with photography. We have seen so many incredible places during that week and I had the pleasure to meet truly wonderful people.

There are so many photos to come but this photo sums up perfectly how calm and beautiful the nature was and how free I felt.

Location: Witsand beach near Misty Cliffs.

Description: Right, this is the last Vertorama from my recent sunset photo-shoot at the dune pools near Witsand Beach that I'll be processing and posting for now. I've already uploaded eight Vertoramas from that photoshoot... this photo-shoot was probably the most photographically productive two hours that I've ever had!

Window washers in Chicago make up to 17.65 an hour union wages.

I’m always amazed to see them dangling from buildings.

One South Wacker is a 550 ft (168 m) tall skyscraper in Chicago, Illinois, United States. It was constructed from 1979 to 1982 and has 40 floors. Murphy/Jahn, Inc. Architects designed the building, which is tied for the 72nd tallest building in Chicago. The tower is featured in the music video for the Daft Punk song Burnin'.

Fisheye pointed staight up.

I saw this beautiful field when I visited Moritz a few weeks ago and I just had to shoot in it! I wanted to create something as wide as the wonderful Sophie always does. Thanks to the Flickr Critique Group as always for their great input!

I originally posted a vertical and horizontal version of this shot... vertical wins and horizontal had to go!

Michigan Avenue Bridge/DuSable Bridge

In 1928 sculptures depicting scenes from Chicago's history were added to the outward-facing walls of the four bridge houses. This one is by Henry Hering: Regeneration depicts workers rebuilding Chicago after the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 which destroyed the central city.

The Plaque reads:

FROM ITS ASHES, THE PEOPLE OF CHICAGO CAUSED

A NEW AND GREATER CITY TO RISE IMBUED

WITH THAT INDOMITABLE SPIRIT AND ENERGY

BY WHICH THEY HAVE EVER BEEN GUIDED.

Met up with Cris the other day. She was out here on biz from Michigan. It was great meeting you Cris, so much fun shooting and doing all those jump shots. ;)

Location: Scarborough beach, near Cape Point.

Description: Yesterday afternoon I met up with Ilse, Martin, John and John, for a sunset photo-shoot at Scarborough beach. Although the weather report said foggy with overnight rain... I was very optimistic that we'd still get some colour in the sunset.

But when I arrived at the beach at the pre-arranged time, I noticed that the fog was already rolling in from over the ocean. Damn, would we be fogged out? It certainly didn't look too promising!

But when I found this rock-pool and looked through my lens, I realised that the soft diffused light was much better than I'd ever imagined it could be... :)

Slightly confusing view of the building with the interesting external twisted blinds, with a reflection of the same building behind. A coat stand adds to the mystery.

Part of the Flickr London Meet -up 7th April 2018.

Nicholas J Melas Centennial Fountain is located on the north bank of the Chicago River at McClurg Court in Near North Side, Chicago. It was dedicated in 1989, to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago, perhaps best known for its major achievement in reversing the flow of the Chicago River in 1900; and in 1999, this system was named a "Civil Engineering Monument of the Millennium" by the American Society of Civil Engineers .

The fountain is designed by Lohan Associates, architects. Every hour, on the hour, the fountain shoots a massive water arc across the river from a modernist tiered waterfall for 10 minutes.

The fountain was named after Nicholas J. Melas who was elected in 1962 to the Board of Commissioners of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago. Melas was re-elected 5 times, serving for 30 years; the last 18 as President of the Board.

We had a great time. These are some of the greatest people you could ever meet. Within minutes of meeting it was like we were old friends.

Met up with Jodi and Lou at the New York Botanical Gardens today for the Kiku exhibit. What fun! This Lotus pool was a good opportunity for me to attempt an Anti-Social Butterfly reflection homage.
