Wakefield St, Manchester

It’s been ages since I last met up with Eddie and Steve and since the Bank Holiday Monday was bound to be a washout… and it was, we plumped for Tuesday instead – what a good call that turned out to be!

Since my last Manchester posting of the derelict Withy Grove Stores building I fancied finding a few more derelict buildings but don’t know of that many apart from The Hotspur Press building, which I wasn’t even sure was still standing. Luckily for me Steve and Eddie know the back streets of Manchester better than I do. In the meantime, I always wanted to shoot this pub but I am rarely in this area, and besides it looks better on a dark wet winter night with all the surrounding lights on, but for now this is just a reccy picture.

We wandered far and wide… well, at least as far as the University of Manchester building on Oxford Road. I’m normally downbeat about my home town as I find it overrated and still a bit of a sh^thole irrespective of what the media say about it being a trendy and cultural city to be in, but I must confess this part of the city is a breath of fresh air with more new builds amongst the old stuff than I ever knew… and it's relatively clean and tidy. I can only put this down to the student population who are clearly more interested in their education than vandalism and graffiti spraying the place. I’m sure we will revisit here again.

The Flickr Meet-up in London - South Quay and Millwall Inner Dock is the setting for this image of the unusual design of Arena Tower - bit like a stack of pancakes?

Once again due to the flat sky I ended with going for B & W.

If you'll be in Rome the first week of August be sure to check out this event: Meetup, Facebook event, Flickr discussion.

I love how this turned out. My favorite photo of the day. This was a good lesson in lighting.

A small wooden boat is ready for some fun!

Explored.

Having fun at the ice park with flickr friends. Thanks to alaskanshelly for letting me take over 20 shots while she was encased in ice:)

Manchester

So, I blinked first!

Everyone’s favourite tram stop in Manchester and all the better in the rain for the reflections. We all took turns in shooting from here such is the constant stream of trams passing through. I would love to shoot this in the evening with the street lights on, or a foggy wet evening.

Thank you all so very much for your visits, comments, and faves. I appreciate each and every one of you! Gracias. Merci. Danke. Obrigado. Grazie. Go raibh maith agat. Tapadh leat. Gratias tibi.

Interesting new building being constructed in Millwall Inner Dock, South Quay - Canary Wharf, distinctive by it's orange colours of balconies. This was at the fully open 14mm wide-angle of my lens.

Another one from the mixer. This is Leigh Taylor's gorgeous and really funny daughter. Does this girl know how to work a camera or what?

Also, taken as a part of Helsinki Photography Walk. Join us if you happen to live in Helsinki Region or are just visiting :)

Shot while driving back from our Abq/SF Flickr meetup. I've both ridden my bike and driven past this tree many times and always meant to stop and photograph it.

I finally did.

I'm claiming this tree as mine.

This Shot is a Must See On Black

Just a quickie edit on this. Had so much fun and loved meeting all of you ladies (and Leigh's wonderful husband). Can't wait to see all of your shots! More tomorrow. This is Brittney's adorable daughter. She is such a sweetheart!!

Cambridge Street, Manchester

Another image from my walkabout with Eddie and Steve through the back streets of Manchester a few months ago. I was aware of the hotspur Press building but didn’t know anything of this building which is no more than a hundred yards away along Cambridge Street. Yet again, I’ve found very little information about the history of the building, but I’ve cobbled a few paragraphs from different sources.

On the side of the building is the sign for Macintosh & Co Limited – India rubber Works (didn’t get a picture of that – drat!). Charles Macintosh invented a way to bond two layers of cloth on either side of a layer of rubber, which now takes his name – The Macintosh. The rubber solution was originally manufactured in Glasgow and shipped to Manchester where H. H. Birley built a factory in 1825 to produce Macintosh's patented fabric. The Macintosh process had some problems but in 1844 one of his associates Thomas Hancock came up with a solution that was much more stable. It is suggested that he got the idea from Charles Goodyear and patented it before him.

The original factory on Cambridge Street was demolished by the second and third phase of the factory located along Hulme Street, however the latest reincarnation still stands today. Soon after World War One the factory was taken over by Dunlop and you can still see the Dunlop name on the building. There is an octagonal chimney on the corner of Cambridge St and Hulme St that was built in 1851 but actually belongs to the Chorlton Mill across Cambridge Street from the Dunlop factory and connected by an underground flue.

Production ceased in 2000 and the main mill was converted briefly into prison cells. Today the building is full of trendy apartments.

from my archive .... Seaview Beach , Karachi at a Flickr meet up !!

A little over a week ago I guess it was I was dorking around on Facebook and looked for Louis C.K. for some reason. I think he's Hilarious! (hee) for one so maybe that's why. But anyway, I found out he was going to be doing a show at the University of Richmond.

I promptly decided I wanted to go.

Then I did my initial Andrea self defeating thing of telling myself that no, I'm not gonna go. Who would I go with and blah blah blee such a downer sometimes sheesh.

I very quickly slapped myself around for that nonsense and did something that is way, way out of the norm for me and my shy nature....

I asked Mike B and Dave to go with me. And they said yes!

So, we made a plan and we carried forth with it. We met up at Capital Alehouse, where I had a delish raspberry beer. Yum! Then we went to the Louis C.K. show, which was Hilarious! He's a Genius! (hee) Then we went around and molested statues. It was fun.

I had a lot of fun guys. Thanks for meeting up with me and being up for some good dorky fun. I enjoyed it!

Another from the meetup. This is Rachel's adorable little boy.

I know it's Wednesday, and there's no bokeh, but this is the one I wanted to upload today, so HBW anyway.

Thank you for all the comments on my b&w conversion! I use lilyblue actions/presets to do them with just minor adjustments to tailor them to the particular photo. I cannot recommend them enough!

The people on the bus were Oakland Raiders Fans. They weren't getting a warm reception going through the streets of Chicago. A number of hand gestures from Chicagoans were seen!

One of the iconic buildings in Canary Wharf complete with the synchronised clocks at ground level. One Canada Square to be exact I believe.

From the Flickr London Meet-up event on the 7th April 2018 organised by Andy Rouse {with essential help & assistance from Kathy in the backroom no doubt}. Brilliant day well done.

Flickr meet-up in London, with a few new locations discovered. Must revisit this quiet location and try some more angles but enjoyed the smoked glass reflections of this luxury street leading to the Thames. {Battle Bridge Lane}

Thanks to Andy and Cathy for organising an excellent day that went like clockwork.

DuSable Harbor is located in the heart of downtown Chicago at the foot of Randolph Street. Surrounded by a towering skyline and being the only harbor with slips close to the loop, it is a very popular mooring location. Hemmed in by the Columbia Yacht Club to the south, the harbor was completed in 2000 by closing in part of Monroe Harbor, thus the entrance is thru Monroe Harbor headed north along the eastern breakwater.

I had no idea this business was there.

The Olde English Faire is part of Autumn on Parade, an annual festival in Oregon, Illnois. This year's AOP theme was "Everything Old is New Again," but in deciding not to go along with the crowd, I tried to make something new....old.

Oct/2007

I hate to sound ungrateful or presumptuous, but PLEASE do not give me any invitations to any groups....I think trying to participate in all those groups really bogged me down! And I want to have time to comment on all of your wonderful work!!!

:)

We went to photograph the cable cars and the full moon on Nob Hill; there were cable cars, and the moon came up big and bright, but they didn't quite align.

We all started out on the cable car island but when the moon came up on the right a lot of the group crossed the street, or stood IN the street, to get a good shot of it.
