The two programs above (Skype and ClearSea) demonstrate the Flexibility - Usability Tradeoff. The two programs provide a video conferencing service. Skype is widely popular software that is easily accessible and useable. It was one of the first video platforms to become popular for personal use. ClearSea is another video conferencing client created by LifeSize it is not as popular and widely used as Skype but provides a more useable service.
I have created a scale similar to that in the PDF sample. Skype is a more useable program on this scale because of its no purchase requirement, ease of use/setup, and good marketing. It is not a flexible service because it only allows users to call other Skype users. ClearSea is not as usable because it is a paid service and requires some technical setup but is more flexible because it uses a standards based video protocol (H.323).
Both are used effectively for their purpose. Skype being a free service and widely popular for personal use is generally not questioned and its protocol not challenged.
ClearSea is used primarily for business providing a better service for professionals who are trying to connect with video conferencing units outside of their own business. This product gives them the ability to connect with a variety of companies such as Cisco, Logitech, and Tandberg.
