The narrow-gauge "Shay" locomotives at Roaring Camp Railroad have a pretty unique drive-train: The vertical steam pistons drive a crankshaft which connects to 3 trucks of drive-wheels via flexible couplings. This allows the engine to handle extremely tight curves and deliver even torque for climbing steep grades.
