The “Smart Flexibility: Advanced Materials and Technologies” exhibition is the result of the ongoing technological surveillance task of Materfad, the Materials Centre of Barcelona. Materfad seeks to explore the current capabilities provided by certain structures and materials to raise awareness and adapt architecture to its environment.
These contemporary works and projects associated with materials, sensitive systems and articulated mediums allow us to imagine the functionalities that can be made available, from smart and flexible architecture to a reactive garment.
The harvesting of wind and solar power, electrical and thermal energy generation, perception and adaptation to climatic conditions, to acoustics and the lighting environment, user detection and modification of the space according to a person’s body, movements or even emotions are the challenges of tomorrow’s spaces and are thus the guidelines of this exhibition.

We are starting to receive the special edition pieces that will be more readily available in store but wanted to share with you some pictures of the High Artistry pieces for your consideration and enjoyment. In the Special Edition, the hexagonal shape has ‘Montblanc’ engraved with ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs. The scarab on the clip is known in Egyptian mythology to promise a better afterlife. The Doue has the scripts from the “Book of Dead” engraved on cap and barrel.
The ballpoint pens are very unusual, because they have a press/click mechanism instead of our traditional twist.
It is offered in Resin with bronze and Doue variations.
The Fountain pen nib is part of the Heritage Collection and is therefore more soft/flexible than the Meisterstück.
For its Heritage collection of writing instruments, Montblanc resurrects historic pens from its past to celebrate the Maison’s rich history and reimagines those notable editions in a modern avatar that feature the latest designs and technical innovations. For 2020, the luxury brand decided to revisit the so-called Montblanc ‘Egyptian Fountain Pen’ from the 1920s and pay tribute to its beautiful design that was inspired by the ancient Egyptian civilization. Back in that era, the western world was smitten with Egyptian civilization, which is believed to be one of the oldest on the planet. The obsession started during the nineteenth century as a result of Napoleon’s Egyptian Campaign and peaked in the 1920s when King Tutankhamen’s tomb was discovered, which started the new era of “Egyptomania.” Some of the most important areas of culture influenced by Egyptomania were literature, architecture, art, film, politics, and religion. As a result, Montblanc released the Egyptian Fountain Pen with a design inspired by the ancient North African civilization.
The newest to join the Maison’s Heritage collection is the Montblanc Heritage Egyptomania writing instrument that offers a modern take on the century-old classic fountain pen. The design elements of the new writing instrument were created in partnership with an expert in Egyptology. It is decorated with a set of authentic hieroglyphics that translate into the word “Montblanc” with the symbols translating to “white stone mountain.” There are two versions of the new Montblanc Heritage Egyptomania pen, each available as a fountain pen, ballpoint pen, and rollerball pen. The first one is the Heritage Egyptomania Resin, which has an octagonal cap and barrel finished in precious black resin with authentic hieroglyphics, vintage gold-coated fittings , and a 14K gold nib with an embossed scarab. The other version is called Heritage Egyptomania Doué. It comes with an octagonal cap in precious black resin and a barrel with metal embellished with authentic hieroglyphics, vintage palladium-coated fittings, and a 14K gold nib with an embossed scarab. The hieroglyphics are taken from a passage of the “Book of the Dead” of Hunefer, a royal scribe who lived during the 19th century (1300 B.C).

Like one of the many breath-taking discoveries unearthed by the great archaeologists on expeditions down the Nile, the Montblanc Heritage Egyptomania collection brings back one of its own iconic treasures from the past. The so-called Montblanc ‘Egyptian Fountain Pen’ from the 1920s, featuring an elegant octagonal shape and Egyptian style engravings, is reimagined for today’s writing culture enthusiasts, combining vintage flair and the spirit of exploration.
Write Like an Egyptian
Created in partnership with an expert Egyptologist, the octagonal precious resin cap of the writing instrument is decorated with authentic hieroglyphs that translate as “white stone mountain”, denoting Montblanc. The barrel of the Doué is inscribed with hieroglyphs from the ancient “Book of the Dead” – one of the most important Egyptology discoveries that contains magic spells intended to assist while journeying through the underworld to access the afterlife. The 14K gold nib on the fountain pen features an embossed scarab – a sacred ancient Egyptian beetle – and a triangular heart-hole that offers a softer writing style, reminiscent of historical Montblanc fountain pens.

Update : These guys have just appeared on the TV talent show "Britain's Got Talent" and wowed the audience. They also got 3 yes's from the judges, even Simon Cowell was impressed and said he's never seen anything like it.
After photographing 1680, with the camera level with the spike I wanted to show the side and base of the spikes in a better easier to view way. I attached Golf tees onto a sheet of latex as it would allow movement. I had intended for it to hang vertically at eye level but after lying it on a table to dry i realised that instead of having to vary the spike size and density to show movement I could vary the shape of the base.
Both shoulders do this. I don't know if there's a name or term for this, but my shoulders can move in creepy ways.
In 2010 the SMUD Headquarters was inducted into the National Register of Historic Places.
Design began on the Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) Headquarters building in 1958, by 1961 construction was complete.
The client desired a dramatic, monumental building with careful attention to the environmental issues, including full sun control and an energy efficient air conditioning and heating system; with flexibility for expected immediate and long-term growth. One of the energy efficient features of the project is the use of solar shades on the exterior of the building which move with the sun. The building was designed for, and continues to house central administration and service facilities for SMUD.
The two wings of the 166,000 square foot building are linked by an elevator and service core. The south wing encloses three clear-spanned floors of flexible office space over a lobby, auditorium, and demonstration areas. The basement of the south wing was designed to comprise the building’s cafeteria, mailroom and general storage areas. The north wing includes two floors of flexible office space over three levels of garage parking provided for staff vehicles. Tree-shaded parking is available for visitors and employees. The 15-acre site is densely landscaped featuring granite boulders and a variety of trees. The building has matured successfully over the years and is still used as originally designed. No significant changes have taken place since the original construction. The exterior has been well-maintained, and the interior has had typical upgrades for a 50 year old building.
Water City Mural by Wayne Thiebaud
A major design feature, a glass mosaic by a young Wayne Thiebaud, encircles the first level of the building. He was virtually unknown at the time and this was his first glass mosaic, which is now considered irreplaceable and priceless.
Wayne Thiebaud was a relatively unknown artist teaching at Sacramento City College in 1958 when Dreyfuss & Blackford selected him to do a mosaic mural for the new building’s façade.
Along with SMUD, they decided something bright and beautiful was needed to increase interest in the building when viewed both at a distance, through the trees, and up close as people walked under the surrounding portico.
Thiebaud submitted two sketches to choose from, both of which were to be executed in glass mosaic tiles. One was bold, with large blocks of black, brown, orange and gray on a white background, a solid color abstract. Dreyfuss & Blackford chose instead a delicate design of a city reflected in water, and Thiebaud was then commissioned by the SMUD Board to make full drawings for four panels, each 15 feet high and over 200 feet long.
The artist worked in a large hall at the old State Fair to project each sketch in full size. Color areas were numbered by reference to 58 shades of sample tiles. Predominant colors are variations of orange, red, and blue.
A detailed study was made by Dreyfuss & Blackford to determine how and where such a mosaic could be manufactured. After much review and consideration, a muralist school in Florence, Italy was finally selected to prepare the mural. Theibaud’s drawings, on rolls of butcher paper, were rolled and sent to Italy where the mural was rendered in tessera glass tile, a process involving a great deal of handwork. The completed tiles were then shipped back to San Francisco, trucked to Sacramento, and mortared into place.

Même si le kiosque d’exposition modulaire de Skyline couvre le même espace d’exposition qu’un kiosque d’exposition sur mesure, il pèse la moitié moins qu’un stand en îlot sur mesure et prend le tiers d’espace cubique – réduisant ainsi les coûts d’opération.
La compagnie reconfigure également ce kiosque d’exposition tout au long de l’année pour de plus petits évènements, chose qu’il ne pouvait pas faire dans le passé avec un stand en îlot sur mesure. « Notre nouveau kiosque d’exposition offre beaucoup plus de flexibilité pour de petits et gros salons commerciaux » nous confiait Covine.

Elegant Exhibit Reduces Operating Costs
Paradigm Learning, a creator of innovative training and communications programs, wanted a simple and elegant exhibit that solved a design paradox: they wanted privacy to show products and openness to attract people.
"Our new exhibit's clean and elegant design provides an excellent environment for talking with prospects and clients and showcasing our products and services," said Gretchen Covine, a marketing strategist with Paradigm Learning.
While the Skyline exhibit filled the same booth space needs as the custom exhibit did before, the Skyline exhibit weighed half as much and took up a third the cargo space - reducing costs.
The company is also taking smaller configurations of that exhibit to several more shows this year - something it didn't do in the past. "Our new exhibit has much more flexibility for both larger and smaller shows," said Covine.
